Is There Video Instruction on How To Use SEOMoz and Open Site Explorer?
-
Hi I have just signed up to use this software and would like to know how to use it properly. Is there a video tutorial on how to get the most out of the tools?
I want to get the competition's backlinks but for some reason it's not openiing the page. I also want to know how the backlinks are assessed to find the real quality ones that I can link to. How are the backlinks assesed and what standards are used to asses backlink quality?
Thank you
Sunil.

Hi Gerd,
We also have some more information at http://www.seomoz.org/help/ose-overview. Some of Rand's presentation does have video working for it, and we'll take a look to see what happened with the first part. Thanks for letting us know!

Hey Rand,
sry but the link above is not working...means i just get the audio...no picture.

Hey Rand,
Thank you for these videos, they are a useful introductuion for a complete beginner like me.
I would like to apply the metrics and the 3 questions mentioned in the 2nd video to a competitor's top backlinking pages in OSE.
I am researching the no. 1 google competition site in the paint sprayer niche and found this backlink URL in the top position in OSE:
http://www.uofaemergency.org/ (PA:44 DA:45)
On closer inspection, the backlink doesn't appear on this home page as it says on OSE but on another page of that domain with a PA of just 1.
Despite the high homepage PA and DA, the blog is completely irrelevant to my niche and seems to be on random subjects. In addition, the content in which the target keyword appears is totally nonsensical.
Does this mean that a backlink from this blog would do more harm than good or would it still be ok to get a backlink from there?
The 2nd backlink is from this URL:
http://hughesglobal.com/2011/06 (PA:40 DA:41)
Again, this is a site that is unrelated to the niche and the target anchor text keyword appears in useless, nonsensical content.
Should I get backlinks from these first 2 sites as the competion have done?
OR
Should I only be focusing on blogs which are relevant to my niche or can I also use more general blogs which cover a wide range of random, irrelevant topics? Many of the backlinks for the number 1 site in google seem to be from irrelevant blogs.
Lastly, is it best to get editorially endorsed links which actually help to drive quality traffic to my own site rather than just having random links in irrelevant content as the competiton seems to?
The purpose of these questions is to help me to assess which backlinks I need to build and which ones to avoid so that I can start my link building campaign and improve my rankings.
Many thanks.
Sunil.

We've got a bunch of good stuff around that question:

http://www.seomoz.org/blog/10-illustrations-on-search-engines-valuation-of-links
In terms of minimum scores for a link to be worthwhile - I don't really think of it that way. I use metrics to help inform whether a site that looks authentic/trustworthy is worth the effort or whether they might have some suspicious issues (e.g. are they selling links, buying links, getting penalized, regarded as low quality, etc).
The webinar I linked to above also covered this issue in-depth.

How do I identify good links in OSE?...and how do I know if it's a poor link, what are the variables?
The links for my competitor's site start at PA 45 and go down to 17. Is there a minimum Page or Domain authority that we need to stick to?
-
Easy and high authority don't often go well together - that's why link building is hard
In the presentation, I tried to cover as clearly and directly as possible how to identify good vs. poor link targets. However, if you're having difficulty there, you might try http://www.seomoz.org/blog/category/4 which has hundreds of articles on specific link building tactics and processes.
-
Hi Rand,
I'm finding the presentation quite confusing and unclear as it's difficult to read the values you're referring to on the slide.
I have located some competitor's backlinks using OSE and many are in content links in totally nonsensical articles on high authority pages and domains. How come these irrelavant, low quality articles are allowed on these supposedly high authority sites? I do not understand the process required to get these in content links.
I would like to get easy links which have high authority. What would you class as easy to get high authority links? How do I locate these in OSE and how do I get them?
Thanks.
Sunil.

Sunil - your timing couldn't be better! I just did a webinar on exactly this topic: http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/using-open-site-explorer-to-uncover-new-marketing-opportunities
Enjoy

There's also a video link right under the search button in OSE that says "See How It Works". That should do the trick.

Hey,
There is a intro webinar available on how to use SEOmoz right here: http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/seomoz-pro-tool-overview
If you need any more instruction or have specific questions, this webinar runs every Friday, so you could join then and ask all you want.

Site Ranking for keywords that they haven't targeted in content
There is a site that I am constantly battling for the #1 spot for a particular keyword and I can't see that they are doing any link building, they are not using any anchor text for the keyword "at all" just their company name (not exact match) and their content doesn't even contain the keyword. I used Open site explorer to analyze their activity, but they are doing something I can't figure out from that data. Any other tools to use? I have higher quality links than them, post content nearly 5 times per week to my blog and their blog hasn't been updated in ages, I kill them in social media, there isn't one instance that they are better than my site and I only build quality driven links, no blog comment crap and get featured on lots of industry blogs for our work. I distribute my content very effectively, I just can't figure it out. They were no where about 5 months ago now they are tearing it up for lots of keywords in the industry top spots. I can build a few links and surpass them, but I have to do it every week or so and I think they are doing something fishy. I just want to figure out what they are doing and bury them. I don't want to post their url and mine here as I don't want them to see this post in search results.

Comparing 3 sites and their ranks
I am looking at 3 sites and what they have going for them and why they are ranking how they are. I would like to get some of your feedback on why certain sites are above other ones. One of these sites is a client of mine, I will not point out which one. The other 2 are just competitors. http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html http://www.samscornholebags.com/ http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php I have compared them in OSE and they have PA of 39, 29, and 58 respectively. AJJ has a ton of links, many of which are spammy and irrelevant. It looks like a link package was bought at some point. The other two have a similar number of links but www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html has more anchor text themed links. None of which seem to be overly optimized. http://www.samscornholebags.com/ seems to have a lot of company branded anchor text links compared to keyword links. http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php as I said obviously bought links and has a ton of stuffed keyword links on poor sites http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php has minimal social shares http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html has about 30 shares http://www.samscornholebags.com/ has about 30 shares but a good number of likes and some other social signals. All 3 sites have an A grade using the on page grade tool here on this site. All 3 got dinged for keyword stuffing. http://www.samscornholebags.com/ ranks the highest with the least amount of links and PA http://www.ajjcornhole.com/cornhole-bags.php ranks next with a really poor link profile and the least amount of social activity http://www.cornhole-game.org/cornhole-bags.html ranks the lowest with anchor text links that are not spammed and some social activity So with all of this in mind, would anybody care to weigh in on why they think any of these sites are ranking where they are in comparison to one another.

C Block Links in Open Explorer
Hi there, Wondering if anyone can help me with understanding the advanced reports in Open Explorer. I'm looking to create a list of competitors links to go after but don't want to create loads of links from the same c blocks for blog posts, articles etc. In open explorer it says my competitor has 451 linking C Blocks but when i download csv's using advanced reports with the filter of 'links that come from the same C block', the csv only has 26 links. The same happened with the filter 'from the same ip address'. How can i download and analyse the links so I can see all the linking C blocks and know which sites I want to use and which ones I want to avoid? Thanks, Ross

Spam affiliate outranking quality site?
I purchased a site hotkeyit.com which was making decent revenue without much work (all via PPC or CPM) but then afterwards started looking at the SERPs and realized I was being outranked for the main term, 'starcraft 2 guide/s' by crappy ClickBank sites like starcraft2guide.com and many others. Researching starcraft2guide.com specifically in SEOMoz/Rush/Majestic shows hotkeyit.com as being quite superior in everyway, not to mention it has quite a social following for a small gaming site, yet Google seems to care not. Can someone please explain what's going on here? It seems like the site was penalized, but there was never any link building done for it aside from word of mouth on forums (this was mentioned beforehand). Thank you everyone.

How did this little site rank #2?
Keyword: "adoption agency" Site: http://www.opendooradoption.org These guys are ranked #2 for this very competitive term in all US regions. They're beating Bethany (and my company) who are orders of magnitude larger in both company size and link profile. Their domain authority is 40, and they have less than 200 links pointing to them with "adoption agency" in the anchor according to OSE. Their on-site is pretty much nonexistent. Does anyone have any theories as to how they accomplished this?

Looking for a recommendation for a site ranking comparison tool.
Hi, It seems that SEOMOZ provides only link ranking comparison with competators. I'm not conviced that this is valuable for my purposes as the comeption often has few links tool, probably the nature of the business.. First, is it worth trying to compare keyword ranking with competators? I think it is, but I'm not that experienced with SEO, especially with Wordpress/Buddpress sites. Second, any recommenations for a tool that will make this easier? Larry
