Used SEOMOZ top 100 Directories, my site ranking lowered, what can we do to fix this?
-
We have made a big mistake.... So what can we do to fix this?
A trainee member of staff has used the seomoz 100 top directories and added to sites from PR10 to PR6 approx about 25 sites, using keywords were possible instead of using the website URL "which i now was stupid!.
Our website ranking have been lowered big time for all keywords used!, eg from 1st to 10th and even disappeared from the top 100
We are contacting all directories asking for the Title link to be changed to the URL instead of a keyword.. Will this help?
I understand that Google give sites a penalty for this!!, but what can i do to put this right and how long would this penalty last for?
Any advice would be highly appreciated...
Thanks
Dean

Do you think it could be something to do with the panda update?
My clients are based in the US and Canada so I am not up-to-date on the Panda rollout status in Europe. Hopefully others can offer feedback on that topic.

We are going to change all the directory links to the url names..
Thank you for your SEO improvement suggestions...
1.footer links = remove
2. cannibalizing your keyword
3. images from a secure server (i will look into this)?
4. verified by visa" and "godaddy secured i will add link to godaddy SSL certificate..
I will make these changes and holpfully see if this improves things..
Do you think it could be something to do with the panda update?
If you think of any thing else that could be knocking us down please let me know...
Thanks Again

Thanks for the additional details Dean.
I need to be absolutely clear regarding "paid" directories. There is a line separating "good" and "bad" directories. Paid directories such as Yahoo, BOTW, Business.com and a few others are perfectly legitimate for Google. These are high quality directories who charge customers for reviewing their site. They have quality standards, and they reject some sites as not meeting those standards. They also do not offer refunds.
Any directory which charges to be listed, guarantees a listing, or offers a refund if you are not listed falls under the category of "paid directories" which would incur a penalty from Google.
With the above understood, is there any possibility your employee included any paid directories? I would suggest reviewing the receipts for any payments made to any directory companies. I suspect one or more directories may have been included which are not on the SEOmoz list. Alternatively, if I recall correctly that list is a few years old and some changes may have occurred with the business practices involved for any given directory service.
I took a brief look at your site and notice many signs of good SEO work, but I also notice many opportunities for improvement. A few quick tips:
-
many of your footer links are spammy. "Moving boxes", "Removal boxes", "storage boxes", "packing boxes", "cardboard boxes", "boxes for moving", "packing boxes for moving" are all anchor texts in your footer, and all of the links point to your home page. I would suggest removing all of them.
-
you are cannibalizing your keywords which has a negative impact on SEO. For example, you have a page on your site /storage-boxes. That page is clearly optimized for the term "storage boxes" yet your footer link points that term to your home page.
-
you are serving your images from a secure server. I believe that causes the images not to be cached which ultimately leads to slower page loads
-
your images for "verified by visa" and "godaddy secured" should be linked images. Users should be able to click the images and verify your site is indeed trusted in those areas. Providing images which are not linked properly is a sign of fraud and should be avoided. If your site has earned those credentials, allow your visitors to easily verify your status by using a properly linked image. If your site has not earned those credentials, remove the images.

Thank you for responding..
We are running 4 Sites and 3 have had the same issue apart from one, it seems that only the home pages have been hit on all 3 sites.. internal pages are fine, This happened at the begging of August and the keywords was varied between 3-4 keywords..
We have done nothing different apart from accruing these directories, I have read in previous questions they had penalties for buying these directory links?
At first i though it maybe a panda update? Then i read about penelties for paid directories?
Any advice would be highly apprenticed, as i have come to a standing block?

You could be experiencing what is known as the "Google dance". I've noticed many sites will drop several ranks or even pages, only the next day to see they jumped forward 5-15+ ranks from where they started.

Hi Dean.
If you used the SEOmoz directory list, it is unlikely your ranking drop was related to any links you earned from those directories. Google can penalize you for paid links, but I am unaware of any directories in the SEOmoz list which violate Google's terms.
The only advice I would offer in using the directories is to vary the anchor text. It is not desirable to use the identical anchor text as those appear quite unnatural. Google obviously understands directory links are not the same as natural links, but it can still be an issue with their algorithmic penalties.
If your staff member varied the keywords, then his efforts are fine. If he or she used the identical keyword or phrase, I would only suggest adjusting it a bit.
While the above is accurate, it does not explain your ranking drop. What other changes have been made to the site? Dropping from 1st to 10th is quite a drop. When exactly was the last time you saw your site at #1 for the keyword? Is it possible there are other issues for which you may have been penalized? Has there been other SEO changes in your site? Or perhaps you were looking at a different search engine?
Without knowing your site URL, the keywords and pages involved we are left to guess.

Page Speed or Site Speed which one does Google considered a ranking signal
I've read many threads online which proves that website speed is a ranking factor. There's a friend whose website scores 44 (slow metric score) on Google Pagespeed Insights. Despite that his website is slow, he outranks me on Google search results. It confuses me that I optimized my website for speed, but my competitor's slow site outperforms me. On Six9ja.com, I did amazing work by getting my target score which is 100 (fast metric score) on Google Pagespeed Insights. Coming to my Google search console tool, they have shown that some of my pages have average scores, while some have slow scores. Google search console tool proves me wrong that none of my pages are fast. Then where did the fast metrics went? Could it be because I added three Adsense Javascript code to all my blog posts? If so, that means that Adsense code is slowing website speed performance despite having an async tag. I tested my blog post speed and I understand that my page speed reduced by 48 due to the 3 Adsense javascript codes added to it. I got 62 (Average metric score). Now, my site speed is=100, then my page speed=62 Does this mean that Google considers page speed rather than site speed as a ranking factor? Can You Use More Then One Google Local Rich Snippet on a single site/ on a single page.
I am currently working on a website for a business that has multiple office locations. As I am trying to target all four locations I was wondering if it is okay to have more then one Local Rich Snippet on a single page. (For example they list all four locations and addresses within their footer and I was wondering if I could make these local rich snippets). What about having more then one on a single website. For example if a company has multiple offices located in several different cities and have set up individual contact pages for these cities, can each page have it's own Local Rich Snippet? Will Google look at these multiple "local rich snippets" as spaming or will they recognize the multiple locations and count it towards their local seo?

Redirecting a old aged site to a new exact match site?
Hi All, I have a question. I have 2 sites with me in the same sector and want some help. site 1 is a old site started back in 2003 and has some amount of links to it and has a pr 3 with some good links to it but doesn't rank much for any keywords for the timing. site 2 is a aged domain but newly developed with unique content and has a good amount of exact match with a .com version. so will there be any benefit by redirecting site 1 to site 2 to get the seo benefits and a start for link bulding? or is it best to develop and work on each site? the sector is health insurance. What are the 5 most important things that a novice blogger can do to improve Moz Rank
I have been blogging for sometime now.Around 50 days to be specific. The best part is in these 50 days is I have been able to Monitor and improve my Alexa rank for above 19 million to below 400 thousand now and its still improving.More so,my country rank has improved quite drastically, its now among the first 20 thousand websites in India. However,I have noticed these things in particular - 1.Mozrank has been constant at 1.5, all this while. 2.The Root domain authority improved by just 1 point to 96,as I am using blogger platform. 3.The mozTrust has been 0 all this while too. I don't understand how to tackle these issues. As I am already featured in couple of websites among the top ranked blogs from India.I have kept my eye on the moz Rank now for quite sometime. Hence this obvious question. In my situation what are the 5 most important things a blogger can do to improve the ranking. I am targeting the bracket of 2-3 for the coming month ranking. Thank you beforehand. Much Regards Amit Ganguly Promote Green .. Promote Sustainability ..

Recently revamped site structure - now not even ranking for brand name, but lots of content - what happened? (Yup, the site has been crawled a few times since) Any ideas? Did I make a classic mistake? Any advise appreciated :)
I've completely disappeared off Google - what happened? Even my brand name keyword does not bring up my website - I feel lost, confused and baffled on what my next steps should be. ANY advice would be welcome, since there's no going back to the way the site was set up.

What is the best top menu linking structure (for SEO) for my site: A or B?
I don't know if these two scenarios are any different as far as SEO is concerned, but I wanted to ask to get an opinion. On my website: http://www.rainchainsdirect.com you can see there is a top menu with "About" "Info" "Questions" etc. Some of these links lead to further pages that are essentially a indeces for multiple further links. My question is: in terms of SEO, is it better to A) have all links (that are now on the pages that the menu links lead to) displayed in a drop down menu directly from the top menu (and bypassing an intermediate page) or B) to have it as it is now where you have to click to an intermediate page (like "rain chain info") to get access to the links (and not have such a large drop down menu) Is there a difference in terms of SEO? In terms of useability it almost seems like a toss up between the two, so if there were better SEO value to one of the other, then I would choose that one. By the way, I know that the way it is structured now is strange, where there is only one drop down that leads to the same page as the top menu item, but that will be fixed, fyi. Thanks!
