404 Errors - How to get rid of them?
-
Hi,
I am starting an SEO job on an academic site that has been completely redone.
The SEOMoz crawl detected three 404 Errors to pages that cannot be found anywhere on either Joomla or the server.
What can I do to solve this?
Thanks!!

Thanks a lot for answering. This was very helpful.

I totally agree. Best way forward. By the way, well done on only having 3 404 errors on re-doing a whole website

Export the SEOmoz crawl report to Excel. The "referrer" field will show the URL of the web page which contains the bad link. Locate the link and either fix it or remove it. Those three 404 errors will then be resolved.

Hi Michal,
It could sound a bit odd, but if there are only three pages marked as 404 error pages don't spend (to much) time on it. Especially if you can't find them yourself then you're users probably also won't find them and so Google won't make this a problem. We had 404 errors ourselves which couldn't be found also but they don't make a difference in my opinion.
A good source of information to find the pages who link to your current 404 pages is in my opinion the Crawl Errors within Google Webmaster Tools. If Google also found the same three pages they will give you the linked from pages.
Hope this helps!

422 vs 404 Status Codes
We work with an automotive industry platform provider and whenever a vehicle is removed from inventory, a 404 error is returned. Being that inventory moves so quickly, we have a host of 404 errors in search console. The fix that the platform provider proposed was to return a 422 status code vs a 404. I'm not familiar with how a 422 may impact our optimization efforts. Is this a good approach, since there is no scalable way to 301 redirect all of those dead inventory pages.

Quest about 404 Errors
About two months ago, we deleted some unnecessary pages on our website that were no longer relevant. However, MOZ is still saying that these deleted pages are returning 404 errors when a crawl test is done. The page is no longer there, at least that I can see. What is the best solution for this? I have a page that similar to the older page, so is it a good choice to just redirect the bad page to my good page? If so, what's the best way to do this. I found some useful information searching but none of it truly pertained to me. I went around my site to make sure there were no old links that directed traffic to the non existent page, and there are none.

Yoast and Standard theme: Fatal error
Hi all- A client has tried installing Yoast on her site and received at fatal error (below). She's been able to restore her site and get it functioning again, but I'm wondering if there's a work around so we can use the plugin. It's a Wordpress site using the Standard Theme. I've searched the forums (and here!) and haven't found anything helpful yet. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! "Fatal error: Cannot redeclare yoast_breadcrumb() (previously declared in /vservers/nwconstructi/htdocs/NWCL/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/inc/wpseo-functions.php:108) in /vservers/nwconstructi/htdocs/NWCL/wp-content/themes/StandardTheme_272/lib/standard_yoast_breadcrumbs.php on line 280"

Https and 404 code that goes into htaccess
The 404 error code we put into htaccess files for our websites does not work correctly for our https site. We recently changed one of our http sites to https. When we went to create a 404.html page for it by creating an htaccess folder with the 404 error code in it, once we uploaded the file all of our webpages were displaying incorrectly, as if the css was not attached. The 404 code we used works successfully for our other 404.html pages for our other sites (www.telfordinc.com/404.html). However, it does not work for the https site. Below is the 404 error code we are using for our https site (currently not uploaded until pages display correctly) ErrorDocument 404 /404-error.html RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$ RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www.)?privatemoneyhardmoneyloan.com/.*$ [NC] RewriteRule .(gif|jpg|js|css)$ - [F] Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.privatemoneyhardmoneyloan.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.privatemoneyhardmoneyloan.com/$1 [R=301,L] So we want to know if there is a different 404 error code that goes into the htaccess file for an https vs. http? Appreciate your feedback on this issue

How can you get the right site links for your site?
Hello all, I have been trying to get Google to list relevant site links for my site when you type in our brand name, Loco2 or for when Loco2 comes up in a search result. Different things come up when you search Loco2 and Loco 2. We would like site links to look like how they do when you search Loco 2. However Loco2 is our brand name, NOT Loco 2. Does anyone know why Google is doing this and whether we can influence results? We have done as much as possible via Google webmaster, in terms of specifying the links we DO NOT want Google to list for Loco2. However, when you search "Loco2", results only show simple site links. Ideally what we want is: Loco2 to be recognised as the brand NOT Loco 2 The same results (substantial, identical) for Loco2 as for Loco 2 (think o2 and o 2) For the site links to reflect the main pages of our site (Times & Tickets, Engine Room forum etc.) Many thanks in advance! Anila
