Grading issues on my weekly report
-
Hi just had my weekly report on my website to show me how i am ranking in the search engines and i am puzzled, i have not changed my page except from one paragraph and the page has gone from a grade a to a grade f. can anyone explain how this works out
-
Hi Diane,
A few possibilities here.
1. Small changes can have a big impact. Even changing a single paragraph can cause your grade to go from an A to an F, or vice versa.
Fortunately, the complete report will tell you exactly how it scored your page. If you drill down into the report, it will even tell you what areas you need to fix.
You can see the full drill down by clicking on the keyword in the report overview. Here's a screenshot.
2. Check to make sure it's the same URL that is ranking. The On page report generates a report for the URL that is ranking for the current week, which can change from time to time. If a different URL is ranking this week from last, then the On-page grader will grade the new URL, which might have a completely different grade.
3. Unfortunately, without knowing the URL or keyword it's hard to tell you exactly what's going on. Feel free to ask a private question, or ping the help team if you want further help and you are not comfortable sharing this information in public.
Good luck!

hi, it keeps changing, one minute it is an a and then a f
-
Hi Diane,
Can you give us any more information here? Did this happen to just the one page, or many pages? Has it stayed the same since your original question, or has it returned to an A grade?
-
Hi there Diane.
How much content was in that paragraph that you changed? If you had , , _or _tags embedded, did you replace them elsewhere? What about the targeted keyword for that page which went from an A to an F? Was it replaced exactly as you were tracking it or did you use a similar phrase/word?__
****__The grader goes into great detail as to what best practices should be incorporated. If you follow it step by step, you'll re-attain that "A" that you're looking for and DESERVE !!!!
Best of luck!__****

Phone number link / critical crawler issue
I've got 15 critical crawler issues coming up, all of which are ( tel: )links to the contact phone number. As this is a taxi firm, these links are pretty vital to customer conversion. Should I worry about these issues from an SEO perspective? If so, is there anything I can do about it?

Scary bug in search console: All our pages reported as being blocked by robots.txt after https migration
We just migrated to https and created 2 days ago a new property in search console for the https domain. Webmaster Tools account for the https domain now shows for every page in our sitemap the warning: "Sitemap contains urls which are blocked by robots.txt."Also in the dashboard of the search console it shows a red triangle with warning that our root domain would be blocked by robots.txt. 1) When I test the URLs in search console robots.txt test tool all looks fine.2) When I fetch as google and render the page it renders and indexes without problem (would not if it was really blocked in robots.txt)3) We temporarily completely emptied the robots.txt, submitted it in search console and uploaded sitemap again and same warnings even though no robots.txt was online4) We run screaming frog crawl on whole website and it indicates that there is no page blocked by robots.txt5) We carefully revised the whole robots.txt and it does not contain any row that blocks relevant content on our site or our root domain. (same robots.txt was online for last decade in http version without problem)6) In big webmaster tools I could upload the sitemap and so far no error reported.7) we resubmitted sitemaps and same issue8) I see our root domain already with https in google SERPThe site is https://www.languagecourse.netSince the site has significant traffic, if google would really interpret for any reason that our site is blocked by robots we will be in serious trouble.

This is really scary, so even if it is just a bug in search console and does not affect crawling of the site, it would be great if someone from google could have a look into the reason for this since for a site owner this really can increase cortisol to unhealthy levels.Anybody ever experienced the same problem?Anybody has an idea where we could report/post this issue?0 -

301 issues
Hi, I have this site: www.berenjifamilylaw.com. We did a 301 from the old site: www.bestfamilylawattorney.com to the one above. It's been several weeks now and Google has indexed the new site, but still pulls the old one on search terms like: Los Angeles divorce lawyer. I'm curious, does anyone have experience with this? How long does it take for Google to remove the old site and start serving the new one as a search result? Any ideas or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wordpress to HubSpot CMS - I had major crawl issues post launch and now traffic is down 400%
Hi there good looking person! Our traffic went from 12k visitors in july to 3k visitors in july. << www.thedsmgroup.com >>When we moved our site from wordpress to the hubspot COS (their CMS system), I didnt submit a new sitemap to google webmaster tools. I didn't know that I had to... and to be honest, I've never submitted or re-submitted a sitemap to GWT. I have always built clean sites with fresh content and good internal linking and never worried about it. Yoast kind of took care of the rest, as all of my sites and our clients' sites were always on wordpress. Well, lesson learned. I got this message on June 27th in GWT_http://www.thedsmgroup.com/: Increase in not found errors__Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs that return a 404 (Page Not Found) error. Investigating these errors and fixing them where appropriate ensures that Google can successfully crawl your site's pages._One month after our site launched we had 1,000 404s on our website. Ouch. Google thought we had a 1,200 page website with only 200 good pages and 1,000 error pages. Not very trust worthy... We never had a 404 ever before this, as we added a plugin to wordpress that would 301 any 404 to the homepage, so we never had a broken link on our site, which is not ideal for UX, but as far as google was concerned, our site was always clean. Obviously I have submitted a new sitemap to GWT a few weeks ago, and we are moving in the right direction... **but have I taken care of everything I need to? I'm not sure. Our traffic is still around 100 visitors per day, not 400 per day as it was before we launched the new site.**Thoughts?I'm not totally freaking out or anything, but a month ago we ranked #1 and #2 for "marketing agency nj", now we aren't in the top 100. I've never had a problem like this. _I added a few screen grabs from Google Webmaster Tools that should be helpful.__Bottom line, have I done everything I need to or do I need to do something with all of these "not found" error details that I have in GWT?_None of these "not found" pages have any value and I'm not sure how Google even found them... Merging Sites: Will redirecting the old homepage to an internal page on the new site cause issues?
I've ended up with two sites which have similar content (but not duplicate) and target similar keywords, rather than trying to maintain two sites I would like to merge the sites together. The old site is more of a traditional niche site and targets a particular set of keywords on its homepage, the new site is more of an authority site with a magazine type homepage and targets the same set of keywords from an internal page. My question is: Should I redirect the old site's homepage to the relevant internal page on the new website...
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lara_dar
...or should I redirect the old site's homepage to the new site's homepage? (the old site's homepage backlinks are a mixture of partial match keyword anchor text, naked URLs and branded anchor text) I am in two minds (a & b!) (a) Redirecting to the internal page would be great for ranking as there are some decent backlinks and the content is similar (b) But usually when you do a 301 redirect the homepage usually directs to the new homepage and some of the old site's links are related to the domain rather than the keyword (e.g. http://www.site.com) and some people will be looking for the site's homepage. What do you think? Your help is much appreciated (and hope this makes sense...!)0 -
Silo This! Siloing issue with KW targets and multiple categories
I am having a difficult time determining how to silo the content for this website (douwnpour). The issue I am having is that as I see it there are several different top-level keyword targets to put at the top of the silos, however due to the nature of the products they fit in almost every one of the top-level categories. For instance our main keyword term is "Audio Books" (and derivatives thereof). but we also want to target "Audiobook Downloads" and "Books on CD". Due to the nature of the products, almost every product would fit in all 3 categories. It gets even worse when you consider normal book taxonomy. The normal breakdown would be from audiobooks>Fiction(or Nonfiction). Now each product also belongs to one of these categories, as well as "download", "CD", and "Audiobook". And still worse, our navigation menus link every page on the site back to all of these categories (except audiobooks, as we don't really have a landing page for that besides the home page, which is lacking in optimized content, but is linked from every page on the site.) So, I am finding siloing, or developing a cross-linking plan that makes sense very difficult. It's much easier at the lower levels, but at the top things become muddy. Throw in the idea that we may eventually get e-books as well, and it gets even muddier. I have some ideas of how to deal with some of this, such as having the site navigation put in an i frame, instituting basic breadcrumbs, and building landing pages, but I'm open to any advice or ideas that might help, especially with the top level taxonomy structure. TIA!

Multi Language Redirect Issues
Hello everyone, this is my first post and as so let me first say, Thank you! The SEO Moz community and SeoMozPro have been giving a great help in making my workflow simpler and richer. Lately I've been reading and learning a lot about indexation, in the process I have been making several improvements to some websites, but there is one particular that I am not able to understand. I am writing this post to ask for your help on an issue related to this website: www.dengun.com We are a Web Agency based in Portugal and most our clients are from Portugal. We have an English version and a Portuguese version of the website. It is setup like this: www.dengun.com/en www.dengun.com/pt When the user hits www.dengun.com it redirects to /en or /pt acording to the browser language. The HTTP status code is 302, i was reading in SEOMoz that this is bad because it's not passing rank to the other pages. Will a 301 redirecting to /en and /pt according to the browsers language? What is the best solution? Thanks.
