What are your top tips for optimizing video for search?
-
Great simple list of tips. Much appreciated, Lewis!
-
Thanks, Rishi!
-
These are the tips I have picked up from various blogs and books...
- Use keywords in the filename and URL
- Use keywords in the link text for the file.
- Write an interesting description of the video including keywords
- Enter metadata for the file e.g title, keywords, and a description.
- Include the word 'video' in the metadata as people searching for videos will use that word
- Provide a transcript
- If hosting on a 3rd party site (e.g Youtube) provide links back to your site
- If hosting on a 3rd party site be aware of any limits on display lenghth of the title
- Allow users to rate your video
- Use a video sitemap to help search engines find your videos.
- Submit the video sitemap to Google using the Webmaster Tools
For info on video sitemaps you can go to http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=80472
Hope this helps...

Video on Site Before Youtube?
We are going to create a few 1 - 2 minute instructional videos. I will be creating a blog that will include the video for our main website. I want to say I read or saw (Whiteboard Friday) that Rand Fishkin mentioned to place the video on your site first for about a month (or weeks). Then, you can publish it on Youtube etc. It sounds like a good plan. Have Google index your blog with the video and receive organic traffic. Then place it on Youtube. Is that correct? Is that the best practice? Like i said, I think it was Rand that discuss this. Would love to get feedback. Thanks.

How can I make embedded YouTube videos point to my domain in the search results?
We've recently moved to using YouTube for embedded videos on our site. We have a number of videos that are embedded and then a larger number of videos which are part of our YouTube channel. I've been reading recently that it's possible to get Google to list embedded video links pointing to your site rather than to YouTube itself. I am interesting in driving traffic directly from the search results to our pages rather than via YouTube. Could somebody provide a basic step by step guide on how to do this please? Or is this something that is not possible? I've been doing a lot of research online but, sadly, can't work out how to do this.

Video Transcription
Does anyone have any best practices for video transcription strategy. We download the file at youtube, edit it, remove the time and upload it again, where youtube adds the time according to the edited file I've seen some transcripts under the video section that have not time on that? Does anyone know how that's done? I've also seen keywords added into those? Any recommendations around that. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Are multiple embeds of the same video considered content duplication?
We are considering using Wistia to host our “new” video content on our website. Currently we use YouTube and find many people watch our technical videos (Eg. Fitting videos have10k + views, which is very high for our niche industry) We currently have “the same” YouTube videos embedded on several different blog posts on our website, as the video is still relevant to what the post talks about Question: Since Wistia updates our video Robot.Txt file, would multiple embeds of the “same video” be seen as content duplication on google & “be harmful” as a result? Thanks
