[local seo] How to compete against e.g. yellowpages on Google Rank 1 - 4?
-
Hi Folks,
How to compete against the big SEO-powered pages like Yellowpages in the SERPs?
I mean, they have thousands of Rd -> Rd Links as well as super Page and Domain Authority.
How has a let's say Dentist or Electrician a decent chance to compete against those? Does Google give credit to them because of the Content they have on their page?
These yellowpages totally take the fun out of it for my clients.
Answeres would really much appreciated. Thank you.
For me it feels like Don Quijote.

So how did it go? I'm fighting these battles a lot now. For a lot of my smaller clients the SERP is filled almost entirely with Yellowpages, Superpages, Yelp, {insert random directory}
I have managed to make decent progress for one of the tougher local subjects "bail bonding". We're now doing quite well and have #1 spots for most of our targeted words. It was easier than expected. A couple good links was all it took.

Thank you for your kind and encouraging answeres.
I will go that way and see how long it takes.
Awesome Forum!

Do not fear these websites if you compete in a local niche.
First get your site into Google Places for business... read some of their success stories such as the one about Lil' Piddlers
http://www.google.com/placesforbusiness/success_lilpiddlers.html
That will get you on the places map. Here is an example.
Then broadcast to google that you are located in YourTown, FL by placing your address in the footer of your site and mentioning your physical address and local phone number generously where it fits into your site.
Then seek links from websites that are located in your community such as your landlord, chamber of commerce, community directories, business associations, tourism groups, local bloggers, local directory sites, newspaper, your Mom's blog, charities where you donate, clubs where you are a member.
Then seek links from websites in your industry such as dental associations, your dental school, professional associations, dental directories.
Now you have local link assets and industry assets that are out of reach for YellowPages and these other database sites. These should give you strength in the "yourindustry yourcity" organic SERPs.

Sure, you can compete. Do Google Places listings show in the results for these local search queries?

How do I increase my client's Google Local listings?
Hi Guys, I have a hypothetical question for you. Let's say I live in a town that has two pizza places and in the maps section of a Google SERP the other place outranks my client when I type in "Pizza Place Smalltown NY." What would be a list of things that I could do to make "Pizza Place Smalltown, NY" rank better in that portion? Thanks!

Do we need an exact marker on Google Maps?
My business covers a service area, but we would still like to have a precise listing on Google Maps for SEO purposes. Is it possible to edit maps to set up a specific address listing, or is that something we can only do when establishing the Google+ listing? I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that when you set up a service area in your plus/places account, Google limits how much of your address is shown in maps. Feedback appreciated!

Viral SlideShare = Google Penalty?
We recently published a slideshow on SlideShare.net and it ended up doing pretty well. It was featured on their homepage for 3 days, and we got quite a few embeds. Unfortunately, a few days later, our rankings in Google tumbled. I'm wondering if this killed our link velocity, which I suppose would have potentially got us a temporary, automated penalty? If you look at slide #4 and beyond, you'll notice that the logo links back to our homepage, and there's also a "View Quote" button that navigates to that specific quote, so users can find out more information, share it, or view any associated pictures. So, in total, there are quite a few backlinks in that slideshow (88 to be exact). Is this what likely caused our drop in rankings? Or is it more likely to be a coincidence? We haven't done anything else in the past couple of months, other than publish an infographic and a press release. And if this is a problem, how would we fix it? I can edit the slideshare and remove some of the links... but it seems sort of silly considering we haven't done anything blackhat. And, it would actually devalue our slideshow, because users would no longer be able to click through to the quotes. Thoughts?

Google local
If you perform a search in Google maps for our company and you are not signed in, it returns our Google + page, with reviews, photos, directions and about tabs, which is fine but, when you click on any of the photos, there is a window that opens to the right where you can edit the location where the photo has been taken, a comment box, photo details and above all, right at the top, MY NAME! Why my name? This is the business page, I don't want people to see that. The snip is below. Thanks! g3OTPRp

Reviews not showing up in Google Places
We have had several clients tell us their customers are giving them reviews on Google Places, but the reviews are either not showing up at all, or they show up for one day and then disappear. Has anyone else seen this happening with their clients, or with their own website? What can we do to get Google to post the reviews or find out why the reviews are not appearing on the places listing? Thanks for any help.

Has Anyone Used CBS Local Pages?
CBS has a service that they offer to their advertisers called CBS Local Pages. Has anyone used this? It's about $1500 a month and basically they send "business data" to local listing platforms, this is similar to UBL and LocalEZE it seems. One of my associates subscribed to this and they're unsure of the value, they are paying $1500/mo for something that can be achieved with $125/year with localeze. Has anyone used this?
