How much is too much content for a home-page?
-
Hey guys,
I'm looking to implement a strategy where I put a 20,000 word article on my home-page. It won't be a super-long page, this content will be divided into nested tabs.
The content will also be found on individual pages (corresponding to the tabs) on the site, but these will have a canonical tag pointing to the home page,
Will I get penalized for this kind of structure?
Cheers,
JC

Bing has just bloged about missused conanoicals will be ignored, I would not do what you suggest, if the algorithm does not pick it up, a manual look at your site would i think be seen as spam.

Hi JC
I was always taught that having 200-400 words on a page is what to aim for. But, in my quest over the years to test pages, I also found that an article page containing a 1000 words is OK. There was a test done some years ago, I can't remember by who, but this person tested the pages with the major search engines and out of the big 3 Bing was quite happy handling a 1000 word page but his stats showed differing results from Google and Yahoo. (If anyone can remember that test please comment as I am sure it was a Moz person??).
Another test I conducted was using tabs on a HOME page. I had in place about 7 tabs with content broken down into each tab. Prior to putting these in place the page only had 1 tab and around 300-400 words.
After adding in the other tabs, the page disappeared off page 1 SERPS for terms it had previously ranked for. At the time it was unknown what the issue was, so I had to go through a process to find out. The page had a reasonable number of inbound links pointing at it, so I did not increase those, and for about 8 to 10 weeks of tweaking and fine tuning I finally took the decision to revert the page back to what it had been i.e. 300-400 words of content and 1 tab. Wallah the page within 24 hours returned to ranking for the terms it had previously. My next experiment was to break my content down into 2 tabs and my page remained ranking.
After further tests I would conclude that too many tabs was the issue and in my opinion Google was penalising my page because it would look like I was 'hiding' text on the page in amongst these tabs.
I still believe Google likes big websites, Wikipedia is testimony to that, and look at how all the subject matter is broken down in that site. Therefore my suggestion to you would be to review your content, how many 'themes' and 'topics' are there within it, and break it down into specific pages of around 300-400 words with a few relevant links between the pages. I believe this will work much better for you.

Blog Content Displayed on Multiple Pages
We are developing an online guide that will provide information and listing for a few different cities in Canada and the US. We have blog content that will be pulled into each different city's blog articles page. Some articles are location agnostic and can be displayed for any city, and other articles will only be city specific, and only appear under a particular city. www.mysite.com//blog/seattle/article1

www.mysite.com/blog/portland/article1 From what I know of SEO, it seems that this is a perfect example for the use of canonicalization. So for article that will appear in multiple city guides, should there be a tag that points to a home for that article www.mysite.com/blog/article1 Thanks0 -
What is the proper way to execute 'page to page redirection'
I need to redirection every page of my website to a new url of another site I've made. I intend to add:"Redirect 301 /oldpage.html http://www.example.com/newpage.html"I will use the 301 per page to redirect every page of my site, but I'm confused that if I add:"Redirect 301 / http://mt-example.com/" it will redirect all of my pages to the homepage and ignore the URLs i have separately mentioned for redirection. Please guide me.

How can a website have multiple pages of duplicate content - still rank?
Can you have a website with multiple pages of the exact same copy, (being different locations of a franchise business), and still be able to rank for each individual franchise? Is that possible?

We recently fixed a Meta Refresh that was affecting our home page - But something still seems wrong. Any suggestions?
We recently fixed a meta refresh issue on our home page. Our store URL: http://www.ccisolutions.com had a meta refresh on it that was going to: www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/IAFDispatcher?iafAction=showMain The meta refresh is now gone, however there still seem to be some problems: Our IT Director has not been successful in trying to make www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/IAFDispatcher?iafAction=showMain 301 redirect to http://www.ccisolutions.com - so I believe we now have a duplicate content issue If you look at both of these URLs in OSE, you will see that www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/IAFDispatcher?iafAction=showMain is getting credit for almost all of the Internal Followed Links, while http://www.ccisolutions.com is getting all the credit for External Followed links. Why doesn't http://www.ccisolutions.com show the same number of Internal Followed Links? I realize this is more of a developer/webmaster question and would be very appreciative of any suggestions or advice. Thanks!

Blog content - what to do, and what to avoid in terms of links, when you're paying for blog content
Hi, I've just been looking at a restaurant site which is paying food writers to put food news and blogs on their website. I checked the backlink profile of the site and the various bloggers in question usually link from their blogs / company websites to the said restaurant to help promote any new blogs that appear on the restaurant site. That got me wondering about whether this might cause problems with Google. I guess they've been putting about one blog live per month for 2 years, from 12/13 bloggers who have been linking to their website. What would you advise?

How do you transition a keyword rank from a home page to a sub-page on the site?
We're currently ranking #1 for a valuable keyword, but the result on the SERP is our home page. We're creating a new product page focused on this keyword to provide a better user experience and create more relevant content. What is the best way to make a smooth transition to make the product page rank #1 for the keyword instead of the home page?

Which page to target? Home or /landing-page
I have optimized my home page for the keyword "computer repairs" would I be better of targeting my links at this page or an additional page (which already exists) called /repairs it's possible to rename & 301 this page to /computer-repairs The only advantage I can see from targeting /computer-repairs is that the keywords are in the target URL.
