Is purchasing domain names still relevant?
-
Our MD is requesting that we continue to renew a long list of domains that we purchased many years ago. Is this practice still relevant or is there more to be gained from SEO and keyword strategy on our own site? All of the domains are redirected to our main site, but the main reason for purchasing was to stop others using them.
Can someone please advise? Don't want to be spending money on this if it is of no benefit to us at all.

Hi Donald,
From an SEO standpoint, if you're just buying exact-match domains and redirecting them to your main website, there is absolutely no benefit. You'd need to build up each website with unique and high-quality content to get an SEO boost.
Here is an article from Matt McGee, Executive News Editor at SearchEngineLand.com & MarketingLand.com, with some more insight on the matter:
http://www.smallbusinesssem.com/sbs-mailbag-should-i-buy-multiple-domains-for-seo/3165/
That said, if the concern that your competitors might snatch up the domains and actually start using them as their primary website (rather than just as redirects) is real, that may be enough of a reason to keep renewing the domains.

Donald,
As a former RN, I feel you
Today, with any client we have, they either already have a bunch of domain names or they want us to purchase a bunch for them. The issue becomes one of proportion. If, you are in a very narrowly defined area of medicine like a cardiologist who only does caths, you might be able to buy up 20 to 40 domains around a given location and make it more difficult on someone to use that as an exact match domain. Given that exact match still matters on some level, but probably a lot less than we think, you could justify it at some level.
But where do you stop with that worry? For me, and for our clients I believe you have to stop at the point where you are protecting a specific domain name: Houston Heart Cath Specialist.com, .net, .org, etc. And then do the same with hyphenated version: Houston-Heart-Cath-Specialist.com, .etc.
To then want to own and redirect: Best Houston Heart Doc, Houston Special Heart doc, etc. is just a waste of money IMO. It is great for the registrars like the one with G and D in the name, but it really does not benefit your MD.
If you give most of those who frequent the Q and A your doctor's domain and five minutes, they will come up with at least 20 domains they could use to easily compete with you if that were the only measure to be used.
I would suggest to the doc that they allow you to focus on more important SEO matters like how to include Google +, the need for Schema going forward, maximizing keywords in site architecture, (let me know if you need more.)
Good luck convincing the good doctor to change his/her opinion.

It won't work when you just redirect a lot different domains to your website from a seo point-of-view. So for that reason you can skipp them.
But when the domain are strong (short, older, relevant keywords without "-") you can use them for nice sites and (later on) link to you main website. That sort of domains shouldn't expire or become available for you compititors. (Or when they bring you a lot type-in traffic, you also shoud keep them of course..)

Sub-domain with spammy content and links: Any impact on main website rankings?
Hi all, One of our sub-domains is forums. Our users will be discussing about our product and many related things. But some of the users in forum are adding a lot of spammy content everyday. I just wonder whether this scenario is ruining our ranking efforts of main website? A sub domain with spammy content really kills the ranking of main website? Thanks

On-Page Markup: Still a Worthwhile Practice?
So I have a question for the community that hopefully someone can help me with. Previously, whenever I created/worked on a website, when I would create or edit the content, I would bold the keywords, italicize certain items, add internal/external links and generally mark-up the content. More recently, however, I've noticed that both my client and many of their leading competitors have abandoned this practice. Now, it appears that all the text appears as plain text, there are rarely bold or italicized items and there does not seem to be as much emphasis on inserting internal/external links. While I understand the ladder to still be an effective/holistic approach to SEO, I'm wondering why the former (the bold, italicized, text variation) has gone by the wayside. So with that, is adding bold/italicized text still a worthwhile SEO technique and is it something I should continue applying to sites I work on? Please advise.

Will Parked Domain hurt My SEO as Duplicate Content?
Hello, I have one website (Migration Lawyers) and I have an extra 8 domains Parked so they are basically cloning the content of the site. so if the main site is: migrationlawyers.co.za and I have an addon domain migration-lawyers.com is that good or bad? is there a proper way to redirect the sites, will redirecting (301) subdomains be more effective? Thanks for your Input 🙂 0i8VXqr.png

Optimizing Main URL with Various Relevant Keywords
Hi, I am new to working with SEO on my website and making attempts to create rich content to allow me to rank above and near competitors of our very niche market for LED microlights. I understand the concept now of on-page optimization. I have found key words that are perfect for optimizing specific products. I am working on structuring my website with enriching content that specific key words will direct organic search traffic to products. However, what techniques do I use to drive traffic to my main domain with a keyword that is relevant to my site but no specific products? For example, the phrase "light show gloves" or "light show" is a keyword relevant to my site in general, so I would like my main URL to show in search results when these phrases are searched. What can I do to optimize my site for such phrases? Do I merely use them in related categories and product content? And if yes, how can I ensure I have optimized my domain fully for various relevant keywords and compare to competitors? Thanks!

Sub-domains and keyword rich domains
Hello All I'm hoping for some opinions as i am confused as to the best action for me to take. The problem:
Algorithm Updates | | jonny512379
Although i say the below, we have never been penalised by Google, not taken part in any bad link building and don't do too bad with SERP. but i worry Google may not like what i do these days. We have one main site that is broken down into areas/cities (i,e London, Manchester, etc) so the domain looks like www.domain.co.uk/London But in addition to this we also use Sub-domains to target popular areas (i,e. http://London.domain.co.uk).
These sub-domains take the content from the main site but of course only display results relevant to London and are optimised for "London + Keyword"
Any page that gets duplicated (i.e London.domain.co.uk/profile123 and www.domain.co.uk/profile123 are ALMOST the same content) we add a rel="canonical" link that points to the main domain+page on www.
All these sites have a large amount of links back to www.domain.co.uk/?Page so the user can also search in other areas other then London, etc. This method has worked well for us and is popular with both users and Google search results. All sites/sub-domains are added to GWT under the same account and all sites have unique sitemaps. I do however worry that Google may class this as link manipulation owing to the amount of links pointing back to the main domain and its pages (this is not the reason we use the sub-domains though) In addition to the above sub-domains we have a few domain names (5/6) that are keyword rich that we also place the same content on (i,e www.manchester-keyword.co.uk would show only content relevant to Manchester), and again these sites have links back to the main domain, so users can navigate other areas of the UK. I worry that these additional domains may also not be liked by Google What do people think? I have started to reduce/replace some of the additional keyword rich domains with sub-domains from the main site and then 301 the keyword rich domain (i.e. www.manchester-Keyword.co.uk now goes to http://Manchester.domain.co.uk) as i feel sub-domains may not be penalised as much as unique domains are.
There are domains that i dont really want to 301 as they bring in good amounts of traffic and users have bookmarked them, etc. Any opinions or what you think i should do would be great, as i really worry that if Google stops giving us good results, i'm in real trouble. Although im not sure if what we do is wrong with Google or not.0 -
