Low Traffic, All Branded Keywords
-
I have a client that is strong locally - and the majority of the (converting) traffic that she gets is through branded keywords. Her traffic is at about ~200 visits a month. She is ranking for some non-branded keywords, but is in a highly competitive niche - gift baskets - and isn't converting for non-branded keywords.
The domain authority of the website is at 27, with the homepage authority at 39. Because she is already strong locally I don't necessarily see the need to build local citations for her.
What strategies would you suggest to help increase the traffic and conversion of her website? It isn't a new website - the domain was purchased in 2002.
I'm just at a loss here in terms of what we can do as an SEO company to help her build an audience - we have already been writing guest posts for publication for her, and she doesn't have the budget for high-cost directories that would really help her authority. We haven't really ventured into conversion rate optimization or multivariate testing - but I feel like what needs to happen right now is the boosting of her traffic overall.
What say you all?

I don't necessarily have the answer for you but I can tell you that you ABSOLUTELY should NOT get into Site Optimization with MVT or A/B. You want to make sure that your tests reach statistical significance and to do this you need numbers. If her conversion rate is only 5-10% of all visitors then you can expect that only 10-20 people a month actually purchase a product. Even if she has 50% conversion rate you are only looking 100 conversions a month. That is fairly insubstantial ESPECIALLY when you are considering a MVT. At a very minimum when I am testing on a clients site I need to see 150+ conversions and even then I do not feel very comfortable in making a conclusion unless the lifts are enormous enough to extremely outweigh the interval/margin or error.
Links are going to help quite a bit as well as making sure that there are no big impediments to her site ranking well, hence a site audit. I would also strongly consider looking at some pretty interesting techniques in doing local to attract business. Does she have a B&M store as well? If so look at hosting a geocache. She might look at signing up with Help A Reporter Out (HARO) and trying to find some articles she could help out with. Try and think outside the box. Also just revisit a lot of the basics to validate that everything is done as well as it could be. But I highly recommend that until traffic picks up, you stay away from testing or at the very least MVT. You need confidence to choose a winner, statistical confidence.

Create link-baits on new web pages. Share/tweet/engage in Social Media. Search for ways to give her clients' additional value. Make new connections. Add her website to professional networks. Participate on gift basket forums. Participate on local forums. Announce new events there. Let her host a gift basket event. Start a YouTube channel and shoot 20 educational videos about gift baskets. Continue to create business listings. Use StumbleUpon. Check if her internal pages are optimized to A level. Cross-link the pages. Become the big fish in a small pond.

INBOUND LINKS FROM OTHER OWNED BRANDS HARMING MY MAIN SITE?
Hey, I work for a company that owns 5 brands, all pretty large sites with 10,000s of pages. We have one primary site, that has inbound links from all the other owned sites (4) resulting in 950k backlinks pointing to the domain. For context, the primary domain has 781 referring domains (with 4 of them being the other owned sites). My question was, will this excess of linking be harming the primary domain? Will the ration of backlinks to referring domains be seen as a negative quality indicator? Charlie

Any benefits to having Wikipedia links now they are 'no-followed' (apart from traffic and natural link prof.)
I see that Wikipedia outbound links are all no-followed, is there any benefit (aside from the traffic) for having links here now ? For example is their co-citation and co-occurance benefits. I know there is without the links since from seeing previous Moz content about this saying Google getting good at connecting brand/s and topic mentions on a page (without any links) so appreciate Wikipedia is still good for that sort of thing. And a no-followed link is obviously good for the potential traffic. But is there any additional SEO benefit to having a no followed link on a wikipedia entry/stub too ? (aside from its contribution to your no-followed links which in turn contribute to a natural looking link profile) Cheers Dan

Are Directory Links a Good Source of Branded Links?
I am trying to increase the number of branded links for a few of my sites since the links are too heavily weighted on anchor text. If so, would you recommend a service like Directory Maximizer?

What if trusted sites in your niche have low authority?
What if the most trusted sites in your niche have relatively low authority? Should you still spend a lot of resources to get those links or go after easier links with higher link authority (as determined by MozRank)?

Using parked domain page to get 50k+ of low quality links, good idea?
Hi all, I'm managing the seo for a hosting company. We have a lot of parked domains with a parked domain page. This will now be updated to promote our products. When this page is updated it will give 50k+ of low quality links to specific pages almost overnight. We curently don't have a very good seo ranking for our keywords, so there is little risk on the downside in the short term. Do you have any suggestions as to how I should go about this? Some alternatives off the top of my head: 1. get the page up an focus all the link equity on relevant pages with keywords in anchor text 2. add noindex / nofollowto all pages or only part of them to avoid puishment 3. add noindex / to the majority of the pages and "release" a percentage every week or so to avoid a "link bomb" Thanks for any and all input!

Trying to rank highly for specific keyword, any advice?
I run a boating site and its been live since early February. Most of my traffic comes from direct traffic or google, keyword "trawler blogs". However, I am trying to rank highly for the generic keyword "trawler" or "trawlers" and I've had very little success. My homepage just got an A from the on-page analysis for keyword trawler. I've also reached out to several other trawler sites to try to get a link from them, or a reciprocal link. Haven't had much traction. However, our site is listed on a bunch (10-12) trawler related blogs (mostly blogspot) in their blogrolls, although these don't show up in backlinks. Any advice would be great. Thank you!
