What link building techniques do you teach to new hires with no SEO experience?
-
Right now I train my interns and new hires on 5 techniques:
1. Appropriate blog commenting the right way
2. Saving social bookmarks
3. Submitting a website to a directory
4. Publishing articles with links
5. How to build up, maintain and use a Twitter/Facebook/Digg/StumbleUpon profile for SEO
Are there some other lower level link building tactics you have tried to teach interns or new hires?
-
- Understanding business they link build for (CRITICAL!)
- Search skills (advanced search operators, semantic flow)
- Use of our internal link management database (recording, categorising and tagging links)
- Content writing / ordering
- Establishment of a real internet persona
- Natural email writing
- Phone skills
-
I think that you will do better hiring English majors who can research and write best-on-the-web quality content then hiring employees who will try to get links into existing content. If you can get them creating content that attracts links automatically then all of the work that used to be spent on linkbuilding will go straight to content that pulls both links and traffic.
-
I guess it depends on your niche. I have three interns working on three separate topics on my site so I haven't been too worried about this. I guess you could keep a master spreadsheet for your interns to reference while their linking building?
-
Raven Tools are definitely worth checking out - http://raventools.com/
Edit - To elaborate you can have several link builders log in and 'claim' a site to work with. It also provides a bunch of useful stats about the value of a link etc and can also allow clients to specify costs for links etc. Try the demo, see what you think

Andrew, I haven't done this because I worry about having multiple employees and interns roaming around looking for good sites. They will undeoubtedly find the same websites and contact the same people and then we could look like spammers. Is there a safeguard against this so that they all avoid the same sites?
-
First thing that came to my mind was email writing but Andrew's covered that already.
That to me goes hand in hand with link evaluation, deciding what's a good link and why; number of outbound links on a page, using mozRank or Raven tools evaluator to give a quick evaluation as to a page's worth then look at what links are going into that page, context, link location, that kind of thing.
But I guess the stuff you're covering is the very basics and the evaluation a bit more advanced and then how to find those links in the first place to evaluate is the hard part
-
This would seem like a no-brainer, but it's not on your list so I would add effective email writing to your list. We all know a good personal email can go a long way toward building a relationship and ultimately, high quality links. If there is a website I am really aiming to earn a link from, I usually don't even ask until the second or third email, and by then I barely even have to ask.

Link Building
Hi Mozzers, I work for an IT company specialising in outsourcing Cisco Engineers worldwide. Due to being involved heavily in outsourcing, I'm finding it impossible to generate genuine and organic links to our website. My question is that is it essential to have back links back to our website to achieve high search engine rankings? I'm unable to get clients and other partners to provide links as we're the outsourced company, but I can get backlinks from unrelated c ompanies. For example we're running a CSR initiative with a National Gym relating to health & fitness, also links from our web designers etc... Do these links have any type of value? Any help and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Jason 🙂

Bad Links to New Domain - Do I Disavow?
About 2 months ago a new client of mine bought a domain and we built him a nice new site; however, it appears the previous owner of the domain used some spammy SEO tactics. I've had to redirect about 30 pages and now I've found some spammy links. I've only discovered a few of them, but he doesn't have that many links yet so I'm wondering what kind of impact this will have. Is it worth disavowing a half dozen links? The sites are in Chinese and appear to be unmanaged link farms so getting the webmaster to remove them is unlikely. Also wondering what else is lurking out there that I haven't discovered yet... I suggested to the client we consider a different domain since the site is new, but he's become pretty attached to it. Any ideas?

Frequency of Manual Link Building Monitoring
Hey Moz! We're in the middle of performing a link remediation campaign, and had a question regarding new links. We do not acquire any links through methods that break Google's guidelines, but we recently discovered a suspicious link to our website that happened organically. What is the recommended frequency for manually checking all newly discovered links to our website in order to catch/remove toxic links? Monthly? Bi-monthly? Yearly? Thanks in advance!

SEO value in Twitter bit.ly links?
When I use opensiteexplorer for my webpage www.novelaspect.com and go under the "linking domains" tab, there is only 1 Twitter link that shows up. However, my competitors have multiple Twitter links. I've posted many many times on Twitter and linked the posts back to our website, but I've always used bitly to shorten the URLs. Is this what's keeping me from getting more backlinks from Twitter (which has a high domain authority!)? I haven't been able to find a straight answer anywhere yet, so I assumed using bitly is ok. Could it also be that opensiteexplorer takes months to register links? I seem to be missing many external links...In fact, the number of external links have dropped by around 10,000 in the past 2 months, and I know I didn't remove any links. Thanks!

Any value in link building to local pages on my site?
If I'm trying to rank for the term 'wedding band' with my url: http://www.musicliveuk.com/home/wedding-bands will linking to local pages such as: http://www.musicliveuk.com/live-acts/hire-wedding-bands/wedding-bands-london help the main page to rank? I added the 'local' pages to try and pick up any traffic from long tail search queries but my main focus is on getting the main page to rank as the traffic from long tail queries is so small. So is it worth me spending time building links to these local pages in order to try and help the main page rank?
