Tracking Social Media Logged In Users Help
-
Hi, I recently read Tom Anthony's post on "Monitor Which Social Networks Your Visitors are Logged Into With Google Analytics". I have looked and re-looked at the code implemented and after two days I am still not getting any results tracking. Could somebody please take a look at my site and tell me if they see any conflicts or errors I may have made when installing the code.
Thanks for any help!

If fixing the bracket doesn't work then forcing the variable to be set is probably best done with an event tracker, and not a pageview tracker so it doesn't screw with your bounce rate or your pageview count.
If you look at google's example they follow up their custom variable code with the following code:
_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Shopping', 'Item Removal', ]);
You would want to put that in just below the custom variable lines:
_gaq.push(["_setCustomVar", slot, network + "_State", "LoggedIn", 1]);
You probably want to change the details of the event to say something like:
_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'login check', 'successful check', ]);
This event is fairly useless for segmenting as it will get fired off every time the code runs, but it will be sure all of your info gets passed to google.
I wouldn't try this until you try putting the bracket in I mentioned above though.

Actually, I just took a look at your code, and I think it is something much simpler.
You somehow deleted the opening "{" after the function call.
Your function declaration code looks like this:
function record_login_status(slot, network, status)
if (status)
it should look like this:
function record_login_status(slot, network, status)** {**
if (status)
The key is that bracket telling JS to start the function.

Thanks for this, so tell me, how would you rewrite the code so that it works. Are you suggesting that
_setCustomVar()
should be replaced with_trackPageview()
-
This is probably occuring because you are calling the custom variable function after the main track pageview function. Without another track pageview or event tracking call you aren't ever really passing the data back to google.
The talk about this in the setup guide for using customer variables in the GA help documentation: http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/gaTrackingCustomVariables.html#setup
Scroll all the way down to the bottom and you will see this:
Call the
_setCustomVar()
function when it can be set prior to a pageview or event GIF request.In certain cases this might not be possible, and you will need to set another
_trackPageview()
request after setting a custom variable. This is typically only necessary in those situations where the user triggers a session- or visit-level custom var, where it is not possible to bundle that method with a pageview, event, or ecommerce tracking call.I will put this into the original posts comments as well so he can update his method, or tell me I am wrong

Free Media Site / High Traffic / Low Engagement / Strategies and Questions
Hi, Imagine a site "mediapalooza dot com" where the only thing you do there is view free media. Yet Google Analytics is showing the average view of a media page is about a minute; where the average length of media is 20 - 90 minutes. And imagine that most of this media is "classic" and that it is generally not available elsewhere. Note also that the site ranks terribly in Google, despite having decent Domain Authority (in the high 30's), Page Authority in the mid 40's and a great site and otherwise quite active international user base with page views in the tens of thousands per month. Is it possible that GA is not tracking engagement (time on site) correctly? Even accounting for the imperfect method of GA that measures "next key pressed" as a way to terminate the page as a way to measure time on page, our stats are truly abysmal, in the tenths of a percentage point of time measured when compared with actual time we think the pages are being used. If so, will getting engagement tracking to more accurately measure time on specif pages and site signal Google that this site is actually more important than current ranking indicates? There's lots of discussion about "dwell time" as this relates to ranking, and I'm postulating that if we can show Google that we have extremely good engagement instead of the super low stats that we are reporting now, then we might get a boost in ranking. Am I crazy? Has anyone got any data that proves or disproves this theory? as I write this out, I detect many issues - let's have a discussion on what else might be happening here. We already know that low engagement = low ranking. Will fixing GA to show true engagement have any noticeable impact on ranking? Can't wait to see what the MOZZERS think of this!

Cross Domain Tracking
I want to track across domains, but also track as a virtual pageview anytime someone clicks on the link to another domain. So currently I have, for example: Checkout Now! As per Google's instructions, I need to have the link set to: Checkout Now! But this will obviously get rid of my virtual pageview. Is there a way I can do both?

Has anyone experienced Google Analytics track the page visit to a "thank you" page, but not the goal conversion?
Has anyone experienced where Google Analytics would track the page visit to a "thank you" page, but not the goal conversion that should result? The goal had worked for a long time as it is as just a goal url with head match. No funnel. Not case sensitive. For about four days now, no conversions have been recorded, but Google Analytics shows hundreds of people visited the page that should trigger the goal. Additionally, we have received the hundreds of leads. A Screaming Frog search shows the code is embedded throughout the site. For the interested, the GA code looks like (and the 8 Xs are the correct number on the site): Am I missing something?

Using Google Analytics for tracking statistics of the HOMEpage
Hello, Lets say I have a website with the HOMEpage being http://www.page.com. There are various subpages e.g. http://www.page.com/page1, http://www.page.com/page2, http://www.page.com/page3 . Now when I use Google Analytics it gives me all kind of statistics for the subpages shown as /page1 /page2 /page3 ... (relative path). According to this pattern the HOMEpage should be just "/". Unfortunately I can't find "/" in any statistics. Is this normal? Thanks in advance

Help with Analytics
Afternoon all - I hope someome might be able to help me getting some data out of Google Analytics. I want to try pull a report which will show me both what the last page before a goal completion was and the country that generated the click. Is that possible at all? When I go to look at goals, I can only pull data for the last page before the goal click ... and when I look at my goals in the Pages>Content menu, I can only view country. So is there any way of pulling the two set of data together at all? Any thoughts would be really appreciated. Thanks very much, Simon
