Duplicate content issue
-
Hi everyone,
I have an issue determining what type of duplicate content I have.
www.example.com/index.php?mact=Calendar,m57663,default,1&m57663return_id=116&m57663detailpage=&m57663year=2011&m57663month=6&m57663day=19&m57663display=list&m57663return_link=1&m57663detail=1&m57663lang=en_GB&m57663returnid=116&page=116
Since I am not an coding expert, to me it looks like it is a URL parameter duplicate content. Is it?
At the same time "return_id" would makes me think it is a session id duplicate content. I am confused about how to determine different types of duplicate content, even by reading articles on Seomoz about it: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/duplicate-content.
Could someone help me on how to recognize different types of duplicate content?
Thank you!

Hello Jeff, I would like to say first that lots of sites have duplicate content problems. For the most part, this is not a huge issue. When search engines find duplicate content they choose one of the pages to list in the index, and then will ignore the other. This assumes, of course, that the nature of the duplicate content is not so bad that it would lead to the search engine wanting to ban you. This can happen if a review of your situation causes them to believe that you are deliberately trying to rank multiple times for the same search terms.
Here is a link that fixes the problem of duplicate content :

Let me try.
1. The answer to your first question is that it only matters if you're trying to figure out how to handle it programmaticaly. In this case you might have to ask the developer if this is being done by a session id. To me it looks more like a URL parameter, but without a live example I wouldnt know, could you provide the website in question? If not try visiting the website once, clear your cache and then visit again and see if the number after "return_id" changes. if it changes that is a session id. If it stays the same have a friend visit the website in the same manor and see if the number stays the same, if it changes then there's a good chance that this is a session id.
No matter if it's a session id adding it or not "return_id" is technically a URL parameter that is triggered by a session id.
2. The second question is still a bit vague, so let me see if this is correct. are you asking how to treat the duplicate content once you know what is causing it? If so, then follow these rules.
If the content changes significantly in the presence of the session id or parameter then this is not duplicate content. If the content does change do the following:
- make sure to use rel canonical for the root URL. In your example that would be: www.example.com/index.php?mact=Calendar
- set the URL parameters in Google and Bings webmaster tools to treat the parameter correctly.
- When the parameter or session id is present add the noindex, follow robots tag. this will allow the bots to spider through and pass on link juice in the event that someone links to your parameter versions
I think you have a larger issue, which is that your website's code is using the index.php to generate all of the pages, in the example that is calendar. This is a common mistake that programmers make since they work to do things as quickly and efficiently as possible. Its far easier to keep all of the code in the one file than to create several different dynamic files that work with each other.
If you dont have the ability to break this down and generate out different pages you might be able to use URL Rewrites to make browsers and bots think the URLs are actually different.

Thank you for your answers but I guess I didn't formulate properly my question.
My 1st question was: What kind of duplicate content is it?
- session id
- or url parameter
My second question is: How do you differentiate them? What do you look at when a duplicate content is a session id one or a url parameter issue?
-
You can determine if you have duplicate content several ways. search in google site:example.com and see how many pages google knows at your website. Also, when you are on page with this crazy url, open source code and see if a page has rel="canonical" tag. In your page that would be the best solution to signal robot that this is the same page as your index.php page.
Also, you can try Xenu. good and fast program to run your site on duplicates.
Hope it helps, you can show your website so we can take a look.

Hi Jeff,
index.php is the same as index.php?something=something&anotherthing=somethinglese
Each page should have a different url like index.php and page.php instead of always using index.php

Duplicate content on Places to Stay listings pages
Hello, I've just crawled our website https://www.i-escape.com/ to find we have a duplicate content issue. Every places to stay listing page has identical content (over 1,500 places) due to the fact it's based on user searches or selections. If we hide this pages using canonical tags, will we lose our visibility for each country and/or region we promote hotels? Any help on this would be hugely appreciated! Thanks so much Clair

How do I avoid this issue of duplicate content with Google?
I have an ecommerce website which sells a product that has many different variations based on a vehicle’s make, model, and year. Currently, we sell this product on one page “www.cargoliner.com/products.php?did=10001” and we show a modal to sort through each make, model, and year. This is important because based on the make, model, and year, we have different prices/configurations for each. For example, for the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Cherokee, we might have different products: Ultimate Pet Liner - Jeep Wrangler 2011-2013 - $350 Ultimate Pet Liner - Jeep Wrangler 2014 - 2015 - $350 Utlimate Pet Liner - Jeep Cherokee 2011-2015 - $400 Although the typical consumer might think we have 1 product (the Ultimate Pet Liner), we look at these as many different types of products, each with a different configuration and different variants. We do NOT have unique content for each make, model, and year. We have the same content and images for each. When the customer selects their make, model, and year, we just search and replace the text to make it look like the make, model, and year. For example, when a custom selects 2015 Jeep Wrangler from the modal, we do a search and replace so the page will have the same url (www.cargoliner.com/products.php?did=10001) but the product title will say “2015 Jeep Wrangler”. Here’s my problem: We want all of these individual products to have their own unique urls (cargoliner.com/products/2015-jeep-wrangler) so we can reference them in emails to customers and ideally we start creating unique content for them. Our only problem is that there will be hundreds of them and they don’t have unique content other than us switching in the product title and change of variants. Also, we don’t want our url www.cargoliner.com/products.php?did=10001 to lose its link juice. Here’s my question(s): My assumption is that I should just keep my url: www.cargoliner.com/products.php?did=10001 and be able to sort through the products on that page. Then I should go ahead and make individual urls for each of these products (i.e. cargoliner.com/products/2015-jeep-wrangler) but just add a “nofollow noindex” to the page. Is this what I should do? How secure is a “no-follow noindex” on a webpage? Does Google still index? Am I at risk for duplicate content penalties? Thanks!

Is My Boilerplate Product Description Causing Duplicate Content Issues?
I have an e-commerce store with 20,000+ one-of-a-kind products. We only have one of each product, and once a product is sold we will never restock it. So I really have no intention to have these product pages showing up in SERPs. Each product has a boilerplate description that the product's unique attributes (style, color, size) are plugged into. But a few sentences of the description are exactly the same across all products. Google Webmaster Tools doesn't report any duplicate content. My Moz Crawl Report show 29 of these products as having duplicate content. But a Google search using the site operator and some text from the boilerplate description turns up 16,400 product pages from my site. Could this duplicate content be hurting my SERPs for other pages on the site that I am trying to rank? As I said, I'm not concerned about ranking for these products pages. Should I make them "rel=canonical" to their respective product categories? Or use "noindex, follow" on every product? Or should I not worry about it?

Modx revolution- getting around index.php vs. root duplicate content issue?
Basically, SEOMoz bots are flagging our index.php and root files as duplicate content of one another, therefore cutting the page authority of each. What we want to do is make the root the canonical preference over index.php. Ordinarily, we should be able to do this in the htaccess file. For some reason, as the site has been built into a cms using ModX Revolution, this does not seem to work. We've tried A TON of htaccess rewrite mods to resolve this issue to no avail. We have also tried revising our sitemap to include only the root address. Any ideas? We'll try most anything at this point. Thanks in advance.

Tags and Duplicate Content
Just wondering - for a lot of our sites we use tags as a way of re-grouping articles / news / blogs so all of the info on say 'government grants' can be found on one page. These /tag pages often come up with duplicate content errors, is it a big issue, how can we minimnise that?

Duplicate Content
Many of the pages on my site are similar in structure/content but not exactly the same. What amount of content should be unique for Google to not consider it duplicate? If it is something like 50% unique would it be preferable to choose one page as the canonical instead of keeping them both as separate pages?

Up to my you-know-what in duplicate content
Working on a forum site that has multiple versions of the URL indexed. The WWW version is a top 3 and 5 contender in the google results for the domain keyword. All versions of the forum have the same PR, but but the non-WWW version has 3,400 pages indexed in google, and the WWW has 2,100. Even worse yet, there's a completely seperate domain (PR4) that has the forum as a subdomain with 2,700 pages indexed in google. The dupe content gets completely overwhelming to think about when it comes to the PR4 domain, so I'll just ask what you think I should do with the forum. Get rid of the subdomain version, and sometimes link between two obviously related sites or get rid of the highly targeted keyword domain? Also what's better, having the targeted keyword on the front of Google with only 2,100 indexed pages or having lower rankings with 3,400 indexed pages? Thanks.
