Sub domain or separate domain?
-
Hi Mozzers,
I'm redesigning a property database, and wondered whether it would be better to put this on a sub domain of my site or to set up a completely separate domain?
Back story: My core website is about lifestyle, holidays and property in France. It's very popular, and benefits massively from long tail search. It's a fairly strong, recognisable brand, so I assume any association the database has with the site would greatly benefit it... Maybe.
My current property database on the other hand is very poor in terms of SEO/visibility, etc, so we're having the whole thing redesigned from scratch.
For the database, is it better to set up a subdomain of my strong branded site, or set up a completely new domain targeting keywords in the URL?
Cheers!
Matt

Hi,
We have two sites mysite.com and aa.mysite.com. We want to track these sites separately. We created two different properties with IDs UA-XXX-1 for main domain UA-XXX-2 for subdomain.
gaq code for main domain is as following,
gaq code for subdomain is as following,
It works well for subdomain. But we want to see traffic from subdomain to main domain as referral.
What is wrong with the gaq code of main domain?
Do i need to change code or is it enough to inactivate subdomain tracking option in profile settings of main domain? Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the comprehensive response Harald! The blog was especially helpful.
I don't think I'm any closer to making a decision (because I don't think it will make much difference whichever way I go!) but the blog certainly helps.
Thanks again.

Hi Matt, First of all I want you to take a look at the below where I am describing the pros & cons of the sub domain & separate domain;
1. Subdomain
-
Maybe technically easier for some setups
-
Has some of the benefits of subfolder in inheriting parent domain authority and separate domain in providing backlinks to main site, but…
-
Needs to establish its own reputation through backlinks from other sites so…
-
Will not rank as highly or as quickly as a subfolder
2. Separate domain
-
Helps you control and generate external backlinks for which you control the anchor text, i.e. editorial links within blog copy back to category and product pages
-
Can create a more differentiated brand identity which can be seen as independent from the main site so generates more engagement with it’s audience potentially
-
Can target a different country, i.e. I have seen UK companies launching a US hosted blog
-
You may not rank competitively at all for weeks or months depending on the quality of the content you create. This may be hard to sell to your colleagues investing in it – it’s an act of faith…
-
Will require a long-term commitment to content creation and backlink development
So, to summarize If you create exceptional content which creates a lot of backlinks then separate domain can be valuable in providing links back to the main site from a separate authority site you control.

I hope that you will found the solution.

Directing a domain.com/BLOG to a different host
Hello,
Web Design | | SharonEKG
i cant seem to figure out how to approach this matter. we have a website and a domain setup in one place and we wanted to setup a blog for that website on a different hosting, what do i have to do to link between the two to make it so when a user type domain com /blog he will get to our blog that is hosted on a different hosting plan? with the blog hosting plan we received a temporary domain that does not expire but i have been told that if i redirect to that temporary domain it wont work correctly also, if we do manage to go through that process will accessing the blog will the URL show domain com/blog or will still show the temporary given domain? is my only option is buying a new domain and just link between the two? Thanks!0 -
Domain Authority
I have a website which has been up and running for around 7 years. It contains relevant content, receives somewhat timely content updates and has not been involved in any poor marketing activities. http://www.aleutianadventures.com/ That said, it has a very low domain authority and bounces around quite a lot in search results. Any thoughts on how to improve the sites current state. Thanks a bunch!

How to Redirect Old Domain to a New Domain?
One of my clients has chosen a new domain for her website so we will redirect the old domain to the new. I understand that once redirected, most of the authority built up over the years for the old domain will pass through to the new domain. Is this correct? Can this be done through the Wordpress dashboard, say with a plugin perhaps? I have a plugin called 404 Redirected I was going to try to use for this purpose. Finally, the client has other domains (5 total) she has used for one reason or another. She wants to consolidate all of them and have everything redirected to her new domain. Do you see any downside to this in terms of crawling, Google trust and authority? I know there are some user experience issues to deal with, but we're addressing those. I just don't want to do anything that may cause Google not to trust the new domain. Thanks, Dino

Internal links, new pages & Domain Authority
I have two questions regarding Domain Authority: 1. Is it possible that a drop in Domain Authority may have been caused by adding a blog and blog posts? In other words, would adding pages/posts dilute the site's authority? And will it catch back up with itself or will that require inbound links to those new pages? (oops! that was 3 questions in one) 2. Would it be detrimental to have internal links coming from blog posts without authority to my Home page and could that have contributed to a drop in Domain Authority? Thanks!

Buying mutliple keyword rich domain names and directing them to one site
I've noticed some folks buying keyword rich domain names and pointing them to one site to try to rank for those keywords. An example of this is a plumbing business that buys domains like austinplumber.com, localaustinplumbingservice.com, bestplumberinaustin.com and then pointing these domains to their main website. Does this help the site rank for these key phrases? How does google see this? Thanks mozzers! Ron

Separate .mobi site or make .com site mobile friendly?
Our website now has enough mobile traffic to justify going mobile friendly, which it is not at this time. I am in favor of making a separate .mobi site designed specifically for mobile phones and smart phones for several reasons. It is cheaper, faster, and easier to accomplish. I think our mobile users will have a good experience though obviously not as much info as our full site. I would use ourdomain.mobi with link or a redirect for mobile users from from the main site. My top three choices for implementing that are http://allwebcodesign.com/setup/mobi-templates.htm#detailsarea
