What is the best practice for using the same content on two pages?
-
I have two websites in a very similar niche(s)...I have good unique content article that I would like to use on both sites because it adds value to the visitor experience..
Example:
Science of Colors would be very useful for my seattle house painting paint colors page.
I want to have content so they do not need to leave the site to navigate to second site. Would the identical content trigger a penalty or would it be crawled, ignored, and not indexed.
Does having a rel=authorship on one site trump the site..Or is it a pile of BAD.

John,
Don't worry about google, write the story for your readers.
Target it to their needs, rewrite, paraphrase, add extra information for one group and different information for another group.
I'm not suggesting you only change a few words. I mean to really target the article for each group.
If you want to see how much google cares about duplicate content, try this search on google:
Romney wins Ohio, 4 other Super Tuesday states
Check those results and tell me that google cares about duplicate content.
If google really cared about having only one original story, none of those sites would get any search traffic.
You can see this for every single AP story, all day every day - those sites are paying a lot of money for AP content. If google was penalizing them for always having duplicate content, they would never show up in search results.

Alan, Thank you for your considered response.
If I only alter some text, and differentiated certain content like images and video do you believe that is enough to avoid a duplicate content potential P?

I thnk you mean in the one you don't want to rank, the canonical tag should point to the one that you do want to rank. The canonical tag points to the original.
John, there is another option. You can edit one of the stories so that it directly addresses the visitors to that particular site. You may have a different headline, different description. There may be additional text. there may be text removed. Also, you can use a photo or a graphic or a video in this one, that isn't in the other. What this does is tailor the story for those readers.

Do you want both the pages to show up in the SERPS ? If yes, no, this would hurt you. The only way to do this if you only want to do it for the users / user experience is to have a canonical tag pointing to the one that you don't want to rank in the search engines.

Duplicate product description on the same page
Hello, I've got a really simple a basic question : is it an issue to put an excerpt of a text at the begining of a page, with a "jump to full text" link at the end of the excerpt ? So the first part of the text will be duplicated. A solution would be to hide a part of the text and reveal it with a "read more" button, but we don't want to do that, we want users to be able to read the full text just by scrolling + we want to put an excerpt "above-the-fold" content It's a product page. A second question : we've got duplicate content between our brand category pages, and the related product page, because the presentation text of the brand is shown on the product page + on the brand category page (it's presentations of distilleries, so it's a valuable content for the customer, we want to show it directly on the product page). Do you think it's a big issue ? Or maybe we can think : "ok, there is plenty of other text on those pages, so it won't matter" ?

How to Get Rid of Duplicate Content Captured on Article Lists
We have a ton of articles and blog posts on our site. Currently, we display summary lists of articles that contain the first paragraph of the article in the summary list. However, in my reports, this is coming back as duplicate content with the full article itself. How do I fix this? Ex: article main page- http://www.robots.com/articles/10 First article on that page- http://www.robots.com/articles/viewing/grippers-for-robots (which shows up as duplicate content with the main artilce page). With our blogs, we have the most recent 5 blogs (in the same summary format) listed on our main blog page. We then have categories that people can sort by. But again, this is causing us duplicate content because those pages show the first paragraph of the blogs related to that category. Ex: blog main page- http://www.robots.com/blog. First blog listed on that page- http://www.robots.com/blog/viewing/robots-and-automation-bringing-jobs-back-to-the-united-states (which then shows as duplicate content with the main blog page). And then you can also select categories to see related topics: http://www.robots.com/blog/category/buying-a-robot which is showing as duplicate content also. Help! How can I prevent this? Thanks! How to handle product pages with similar information
We have thousands of product pages with similar information but differentiating variables such as length/width. Example: http://www.savvyboater.com/store/p/2100-Cover-for-V-Hull-Fishing-Boat-with-Side-Console-O-B-14-X-74-.aspx http://www.savvyboater.com/store/p/2101-Cover-for-V-Hull-Fishing-Boat-with-Side-Console-O-B-15-X-76-.aspx http://www.savvyboater.com/store/p/2102-Cover-for-V-Hull-Fishing-Boat-with-Side-Console-O-B-16-X-92-.aspx http://www.savvyboater.com/store/p/2103-Cover-for-V-Hull-Fishing-Boat-with-Side-Console-O-B-17-X-92-.aspx We built individual products instead of grouped products because we recommend specific part numbers for specific make, model, year boats through our finder tool. These pages have recently started showing up in SEOmoz as duplicate content and we are looking for solutions to solve it. We have considered creating a "parent page" that lists all sizes and then using a rel canonical on each individual page to tell google that the parent page is the preferred page. Any thoughts or other ideas on this?
