Is Google stupid?
-
Why does buying links still work? I don't mean approaching an individual webmaster and cutting a deal, that seems to be nearly impossible to detect. But the huge link brokers, like Text Link Ads, Build my Rank or Linkvine, Google has to be aware of them, right? Can't they just create accounts to see the whole network, and ban the sites? Why wouldn't they just do that?
-
We've seen a pattern with this stuff - it works temporarily, then gets cut in value. TLA is the one I tested last year - rankings went way up, but as soon as we dropped the links they fell (indicating that TLA stock did work). However, when we observed and talked to folks who'd turned it on and kept it on, they reported that rankings, then dropped (within ~90 days with TLA).
Recently, we've seen Google start banning many private blog networks (warning, links below contain a LOT of black hat stuff and some none-too-friendly posters as well, unfortunately):
http://www.internetmarketingtoolsupdate.com/internet-marketing-tips/seo-link-monster-warning/
Those are all in just the past week.
Google's not stupid, but I do think their webspam team has been swamped. Recently though, it feels like they're making a bit more progress, and I wouldn't be surprised if they continue kicking some tail in the link spam/black hat world.

Google is actually addressing private blog networks as we speak. I was shocked this hasn't been discussed at all (on here at least). But in the past week or two, they had an algo update to penalize this PBNs, and the people that purchase links on them. Matt Cutts even tweeted about it last week.

I think Google will eventually crack down on sites like Build My Rank, and it could be soon. Perhaps it's not so easy since these sites have hundreds or thousands of blog sites in their blog network, but I'm willing to bet that Google will do something about them.
I can't imagine anyone serious thinks relying entirely on these sites for their backlinks is a good long-term strategy (or even a short-term one). It's just a matter of time until Google cracks down.

If Google were truly stupid, they wouldn't be a multi-billion dollar company, let alone the #1 search engine worldwide.
There's two groups of behavior Google doesn't like. You have your black hat SEO (where you can spike your ratings but you're only one or two steps ahead of Google) and your grey hat (where Google doesn't like the behavior but also can't really filter it out yet).
Paid links are a problem only if they are followed links. A nofollow paid link is, AFAIK, acceptable to Google because you're not trying to game the SEO (and every legitimate network does it that way). Paid links as an SEO strategy CAN work, but Google has proven (especially with Panda) that they have become MUCH better at finding unnatural link patterns and devaluing them. And for an SEO that's your real risk: fruitless efforts (especially if you spent money on them).

Hi Menachemp,
In a word, no. Google is not stupid. Yes, these link farms do exist, but Google is very clued up, and will penalise sites with links from known link farms. If the link comes from a site with absolutely no value/correlation to your site, it can actually have a negative effect on your SEO.
It is becoming increasingly important to get links from valuable sources, it's not just about quantity. I would say that 10 links from very valuable, reputable sources is better than 1,000 links from mediocre sources.
Cheers
Matt

How much does doing google search queries dilute your search console data
So, does performing dozens or hundreds of search queries a day dilute your search console data, or does google filter this out or how does this work exactly? When you do an icognito search and click on your site does this information get recorded in search console?

What is the best way to eliminate ghost traffic from Google Analytics?
Hey Mozzers, I just wanted to see how you all deal with eliminating Google ghost traffic sources from Google. I tried setting up a RegEx 'include' list before, but it seemed as though I was blocking potential traffic sources when I did as much (I'm probably missing something here). Anyway, I'm interested to read how you all have dealt with this issue in the past, thanks for reading!

Homepage not ranking for branded searches after Google penalty removal
Hi all, A site I work on was hit with a manual action penalty some time ago for spammy links built by a former SEO agency. It was a partial match penalty so only affected some pages - most likely the homepage. We carried out a lot of work cleaning up links and disavowed suspicious links which we couldn't get removed. Again, most of these were to the homepage. The disavow file was uploaded to Google last Friday and our penalty was lifted this Tuesday. Since uploading the disavow file, our homepage does not show up at all for branded searches. I've carried out the obvious checks - robots.txt, making sure we're not accidentally noindexing the page or doing anything funky with canonicals etc and it's all good. Have any of you guys had a similar experience? I'm thinking Google simply needs time to catch up due to all the links we've disavowed and sitting tight is the best option but could do with some reassurance! Any past experiences or advice on what I might be missing would be great. Thanks in advance, Brendan.

When you get a new inbound link do you submit a request to google to reindex the new page pointing at you?
I'm just starting my link building campaign in earnest, and received my first good quality inbound link less than an hour ago. My initial thought was that I should go directly to google, and ask them to reindex the page that linked to me... If I make a habit of that (getting a new link, then submitting that page directly to google), would that signify to google that this might not be a natural link building campaign? The links are from legitimate (non-paid, non-exchange) partners, which google could probably figure out, but I'm interested to know opinions on this. Thanks, -Eric

Can i 301 redirect a website that does not have manual penalty - but definetly affected by google
ok, i have a website (website A) which has been running since 2008, done very nicely in search results, until january of this year... it dropped siginificantly, losing about two thirds of visitors etc... then in may basically lost the rest... i was pulling my hair out for months trying to figure out why, i "think" it was something to do with links and anchor text, i got rid of old SEO company, got a new SEO company, they have done link analysis, trying to remove lots of links, have dissavowed about 500 domains... put in a reconsideration request... got a reply saying there is no manual penalty... so new seo company says all they can do is carry on removing links, and wait for penguin to update and hopefully that will fix it... this will take as along as it takes penguin to update again... obviously i can not wait indefinetely, so they have advised i start a new website (website B)... which is a complete duplicate of website A. Now as we do not know whats wrong with website A - (we think its links - and will get them removed) my seo company said we cant do a 301 redirect, as we will just cause what ever is wrong to pass over to website B... so we need to create a blank page for every single page at website A, saying we have moved and put a NO FOLLOW link to the new page on website B.... Personally i think the above will look terrible, and not be a very user friendly experience - but my seo company says it is the only way to do it... before i do it, i just wanted to check with some experts here, if this is right? please advise if 301 redirects are NOT correct way to do this. thanks

Link Removal and Disavow - Is Page Rank a sign directory is okay with Google
Hi, Currently cleaning up a clients link profile in preparation for disavow file and I have reached the stage where I am undecided on some directories as I don't want to remove all links. Is Page Rank an indication that Google is okay with a particular directory? For example the following domain is questionable, but has a PR of 3. Do I need to consider scrapping all such links in anticipation of future updates? http://www.easyfinddirectory.com/shopping-and-services/clothing http://www.toplocallistings.co.uk/Apparel/West_Midlands/Shropshire/ Thanks in advance Andy

www.simplymadrid.org
www.simplyrome.org etc... Again there are not spam sites but not as useful as they coul become... I want to work on few sites only to see how it goes.... will this penalise my sites that I am working on if I have other sites with average content or not as good ? I want to make great content good for link bait 🙂0 -
From page 3 to page 75 on Google. Is my site really so bad?
So, a couple of weeks ago I started my first CPA website, just as an experiment and to see how well I could do out of it. My rankings were getting better every day, and I’ve been producing constant unique content for the site to improve my rankings even more. 2 days ago my rankings went straight to the last page of Google for the keyword “acne scar treatment” but Google has not banned me or given my domain a minus penalty. I’m still ranking number 1 for my domain, and they have not dropped the PR as my keyword is still in the main index. I’m not even sure what has happened? Am I not allowed to have a CPA website in the search results? The best information I could find on this is: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=76465 But I’ve been adding new pages with unique content. My site is www.acne-scar-treatment.co Any advice would be appreciated.
