Do you consider it risky to hire outside firms to build links?
-
Based on what happened to JC Penny do you think there is a significant risk of penalties if you have an outside firm build links for your site? For example they could buy some links and get caught or engage in black hat tactics without our knowledge.
Is there anything that can be done to minimize any such risk?
-
You'd be surprised. Quite a few forums where I contribute allow followed links, however you cannot set the anchor text. The text of the link is your website address. Google+ allows you to have followed links from your profile to other sites, which is cool, I think it uses rel="contributor" or something.
-
As wordy as I usually am, I think Brent's short-but-sweet answer is dead on. It's like hiring any contractor - there's always risk, and you have to do your homework. That means:
(1) Get referrals, properly vet them, and make sure they pass the "smell" test. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
(2) Outline what you expect in detail. I can't stress this enough. People hire outside firms, say "get me some links" and then are angry when those links are crap. You didn't say what kind of links to build, or how many, or what you're opposed to, or what your risk tolerance is. Make that all crystal clear.
(3) Monitor them, like any employee or contractor. If someone comes to work on my kitchen, I check in on them. I'm not trying to insult them, but it's my kitchen, and if they screw it up it's my problem. Insist on reports, get logins to sites (where applicable), get lists of the links they're building, etc. If you're uncomfortable with what they're doing, tell them to stop.
-
Most forums are knowledgeable of this tactic and have all of those signature links setup as nofollow.
-
If you hire me to build links for you. I could see where all of those links come from and then as soon as my contract is done with you I go straight to your competitor and ask if he needs links... then get paid by him.... by then you will need more links.
Or, I could toss up my own crappy site, immediately get all of the links that I got for you and that puts me into the money.
So, where the links come from could be considered the most valuable of competitive intelligence.
-
I'm not saying forum sigs are in and of themselves bad, I'm referring to blitzing every forum under the sun related or not with them by third party link builders. If it's relevant and you're building it up in-house, sure. I've even done that in the past.
-
Surely if you're actively contributing to a community forum offering good advice to others then its not a bad idea to have a link back to your site as part of your signature?
I'm not saying that every post or comment you submit would contain a link back to your site because that would be overkill but where its appropriate, surely that's acceptable.
-
While I realize that it's probably possible for third party back linkers to be useful I think both the pricing model and market are against it. When payment is 'per link' there's no real incentive for the provider to do anything other than quantity over quality. I know I've seen link profiles for both competition and projects I've taken over from other SEOs that are plainly silly, and obviously reek of badly done link building. This includes forum profile pages, signatures, Yahoo Answer spam, blog spams, markov-chain generated splogs, sponsored blogs barely in english, thousands of pages based on scraping, and so on, and so on. It's possible that there are good ones out there (after all, if they were good I wouldn't even notice their activity) but I've yet to see any.
-
Personally I'd say its better to research forum websites that discuss topics relating to your industry and then useopen site explorer to see what their domain authority is like. Most forums will allow you to have a signature, which could include your website URL, and when answering / contributing to the forum (where applicable) you could link people off to one of your blog posts to help build backlinks to your website.
I'd also recommend submitting your website to a few directory websites relating to your industry. You might have to pay yearly for it, but you will have a link from a reputable / trustworthy domain.
If you have social media profiles like Google+ then you can add links (and your own link text) into your profiles associated links sections. These links are followed by Google, so your site will benefit from the links being there, unlike most backlink exchange sites where they add rel="nofollow" to the links.

Link building companies irrespective of the cost and location say as "won't use mommy blogs" and will acquire links only from the subject related sites.
But didn't come across any major link building companies accepting penalty clause in their SLA if they breach their promises.
Since hiring link specialists and content writers are difficult for big companies for their immediate need, don't see any option other than going with link builders. Search engines also think twice before penalizing the big sites. Paid search budget will help. Whereas small site owners have high risk.
Own link building team is always recommended.
-
If you are going to work with an outside company to help you build links, then you should thoroughly investigate the company and make sure they are on the up and up. And when they start, really review their reports and watch very closely all metrics with your site.

What happened to JC Penny??
-
If you think about it, anybody could hire a company and start buying bad links for competition. If it would be that easy to penalize a site, won't everybody be doing that ? But to answer your question directly, in order to get links that help you, you got to have a good understanding on the kind of links you are actually going to get. Will they be permanent links that are being built or are they rented links ? Depending upon your current link profile and the competition, I would suggest you evaluate what exactly needs to get done before reaching out to a Link Building Company per se.

Link building need help
I've been doing link building for the past 2 months for a website. I've put together some blog posts and submitted them to some sites. However, I don't want to repeat the content on other sites or use the same sites again for links. The problem with this company is that nothing is happening. The last press release they issued was in 2010 and in the 4 months I've been working for them nothing has happened. I have found a few good quality websites in our niche which I could approach for links, but I want to have good content to put on them. Does anyone have any ideas as how to create content that would be suitable, bearing in mind this a B2B company.

Page Rank, Domain Rank, Link Building....Oh my!
Hi Everyone, So I am looking into a couple of sites that we can use for press release distribution. Naturally, I am looking for sites that will improve our SEO (sites that have a high domain authority). I guess I am just trying to wrap my head around the whole domain/page authority and how it effects our SEO. So for example, I am looking at prlog.org. They have an overall domain authority of 91...sweet! Is this all I should be looking at when I am looking to place a press release, which will include targeted links using appropriate anchor text? If I drill down even further to the actual section that the press release will live on, which will be the security section of the site, the page authority is a 49. Is this what I should be looking at? Do I have to drill down even further and look at the page rank for the actual URL that my press release will actually live on? I am assuming since it will be a totally new page that the page authority will be very low. Is this correct? Should I be looking at a combination of the two? The page authority of 49 is pretty low but the domain authority is very high. What does this mean for my SEO and my links? In a nutshell I need to know what I should be looking at for SEO purposes, is it domain authority, is it page authority of the section the site will live on or is it the actual page that my press release lives on. Is it a combination? What would you do in this situation? Also, could you give me a little more insight into when a low domain/page authority can actually hurt you. What the threshold where you get no link juice or are actually penalized? Do you have any insight in the domain/page domain number that is considered not worth it? Thanks all! Pat

Link Building Ideas?
Hi everyone, I am currently working on a site where people can buy mail-order bagels, i.e. the bagels are shipped via postal mail. It's a good alternative for places that have no good bagel stores nearby, especially in small, rural towns. I am about to launch a link-building campaign for the website, but am a little stuck as to where to begin. My first thought was guest posting, but it seems like the vast majority of food blog owners are very protective of their blogs and rarely, if ever, allow guest posts. I also thought about doing sponsored reviews (i.e. sending mommy bloggers free samples in exchange for a review), but that's essentially a paid link, i.e. a no-no. There are of course generic web directories, but those only get you so far, and article marketing is out of the question (too spammy). Was hoping I might be able to bounce off some ideas off of you all. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance for whatever tips/ideas you might be able to share 🙂 Lukas

Link Building by Guest Posting.... But How many posts?
Hello I am a small Computer/Tech Blogger (part time) from India and following are my Domain stats: PR: 4 Alexa Rank: 65K *** Open Site Explorer Page Authority: 46/100** *** Open Site Explorer Domain Authority: 35/100** *** Open Site Explorer Linking Root Domain: 98** *** Open Site Explorer Total Links: 1196** *** mR: 4.83** *** mT: 5.81** Domain Age: 3 Years and 4 Months Blog Posts I made: around 580 I never spent ANY time in Link Building, only wrote content for my blog. I only attached my Blog URL in some BIG forums as a signature (never meant for link building, but later found that the signature section of some forums are DOFOLLOW) and very few sites linked/links to me/my articles. Reasons why I am asking question here: Majority of my blog posts ranks very well (top 10) on Google.co.in, but on Google.com, most of them are present from Page 2 - Page 10 - I want to rank my posts well on Google.com, Google.co.uk etc. SERP of Big sites remains static, but my position shuffles a lot. Sometimes any particular blog post of mine is on first page (on a particular Google Domain) and after some days/months, it shifts to 2nd or 3rd page! This happens a lot! As soon as Google Updates pagerank, many recent articles of mine will get atleast PageRank 2 or 3, but when pagerank in updated again, the pagerank of these very same articles drops! Very few articles of mine have static pagerank I am not a master in Computers/Tech and am not the first one on the internet to discover and write something UNIQUE/NEW, but I try to write detailed and good quality tutorials. If main keywords of my posts matches with the keywords of BIG domains, I never rank on first page, no matter I have written more detailed content compared to the content of these BIG sites! Google sends me traffic to majority of my blog posts by means of random keywords! I have decided to do Guest Posting on some blogs of similar niche and with Open Site Explorer Domain Authority ranging from 60 to 80. I will try my level best to write good content for them and they also allows Author Bio with a backlink to my Blog Homepage (in my case, the anchor text for this link will be my Blog Name) I want to ask following questions: Is one guest post with a backlink to my Homepage is enough? or I have to write more content for same domain? I have heard that, if you link to a website/blog which is linking to you, Google don't pass any juice to either of them because of reciprocal linking! - Is this true? The websites on which I am planning to do guest posts are very well established and trusted websites. Some of them have Open Site Explorer Domain Authority of 80+. Also, I never linked to them nor I am planning to do so! I request SEO Gurus here to please help me and I apologize in advance if I am wrong at any point. MY SEO concepts are not much clear and I am a newbie 🙂 Thanks and Regards

Can anybody recommend a link building company for outsource?
I am about to land another fat client and it's in a highly competitive industry. While looking at the competition, it is clear to me that the competitors have an SEO link building team. Since Americans are too expensive for the budget allocated to this project, I need to outsource to India, Philippines, or some third world nation. CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A GOOD LINK BUILDING COMPANY IN A DEVELOPING NATION (EDITED: 3RD WORLD) COUNTRY?
