New Magento store with lots of duplicate contect
-
Hi,
I am fairly new to SEOmoz and would really appreciate some pointers.
I have just received the results of my first crawl and I have over 1800 pages of duplicate content.
this is an example
Cream poplin slim fit mens business shirt from Jermyn Street Shirt Co.
http://jsshirts.com.au/aylesbury-cream-poplin-slim-fit-shirt.html
Heading other URL's indicates 10
My questions are what does this figure 10 represent? what do I need to do to remove this duplicate content.
Thanks

Magento 1.4 and above has native support for canonical tags but it has to be be enabled. Goto System > Configuration >Catalog > Search Engine Optimization and enable Use Canonical Link Meta Tag For Categories and Use Canonical Link Meta Tag For Products
-
Yeah, canonicals are the key.
We use this extension on our Magento shop which lets us control the Canonical URLs properly as well as generating some good google friendly sitemaps

Hope this helps,
James

Hi Jason,
Unfortunately the campaign link doesn't work but typically the duplicate content issues in Magento will arise around category (when refining search criteria) & product pages (when selecting different options - collar size, shirt material, color etc).
For example, all these URLs contain the same Title & Meta Description but essentially display the same textual content:
- http://jsshirts.com.au/cufflinks.html?cufflink_material=94&dir=desc&order=position
- http://jsshirts.com.au/cufflinks.html?cufflink_material=92&dir=desc&order=position
- http://jsshirts.com.au/cufflinks.html?cufflink_material=94&cufflink_range=88&dir=desc&order=position
- http://jsshirts.com.au/cufflinks.html?cufflink_material=94&dir=desc&mode=list&order=position
- etc etc
A canonical tag will help attribute a single URL as the content originator
Other options could be to control the refining via JQuery or nofollow those links. It all depends on more thorough investigation of course

Images & Duplicate Content Issues
Here's a scenario for you: The site is running WordPress and the images are uploaded to the media section. You can set image attributes there such as the Description & Alt Tag. Let's say you'd like to reuse the same image in two different blog posts. The image keeps the same Description & Alt Tag associated with it in the media section. Would this be considered duplicate content? What would be the best practice in this case to reuse the same image in multiple posts?

How to Get Rid of Duplicate Content Captured on Article Lists
We have a ton of articles and blog posts on our site. Currently, we display summary lists of articles that contain the first paragraph of the article in the summary list. However, in my reports, this is coming back as duplicate content with the full article itself. How do I fix this? Ex: article main page- http://www.robots.com/articles/10 First article on that page- http://www.robots.com/articles/viewing/grippers-for-robots (which shows up as duplicate content with the main artilce page). With our blogs, we have the most recent 5 blogs (in the same summary format) listed on our main blog page. We then have categories that people can sort by. But again, this is causing us duplicate content because those pages show the first paragraph of the blogs related to that category. Ex: blog main page- http://www.robots.com/blog. First blog listed on that page- http://www.robots.com/blog/viewing/robots-and-automation-bringing-jobs-back-to-the-united-states (which then shows as duplicate content with the main blog page). And then you can also select categories to see related topics: http://www.robots.com/blog/category/buying-a-robot which is showing as duplicate content also. Help! How can I prevent this? Thanks! How to make new content Indexed faster by google
I would like to know what can I do. Normally it takes google around 3 days to index my content. I got a site map, swiched the crawling rate to the fastest in my webmaster tools. I also tried crawling my homepage as google bot and sending it to the index with all linked pages but even if I do so my content takes around 3 days if not more to get indexed. I publish around 20 posts a week. My SEOmoz page authority is 48. Some sites of my competition seem to be getting their content indexed in the same day. What else can be done?

With the structure of WordPress when multiple tags are selected, SEOMoz reports show each URL/tag as duplicated content? What to do?
wordpress.com/blogpost/tag/word1 wordpress.com/blogpost/tag/word 2 etc. Same page, but WP generates multiple URLs for each tag. in reports, this shows as duplicate content. Is it something to worry about? If yes, what is the best fix?

Duplicate Content on WordPress Blogs?
We are getting ready to add a WordPress blog to our established website. Our plans are to place it in a subfolder on our website to maximize rank. My question is...Do we need to utilize a Meta Robots WordPress plugin by Yoast or similar so that noindex, follow robots meta tags will prevent search engine indexing of search result pages, subpages and category archives? We want to avoid the dreaded Duplicate Content Error and penalty. Any other great SEO WordPress plugins? Thank you for your time. Brian

Duplicate Content - Video
I recently noticed a drop in rankings for my site shortly after the new algorithm update. I'm not sure exactly why rankings went down, but would like to know if it has to do with having videos on our site that do not belong to us. We have a few videos on product pages that the manufacturer of the product had created. I was wondering if Google maybe thinks we are maliciously stealing these videos or something and penalizing us for it. And if stuff like this has anything to do with the recent algorithm update. We make our own videos, but some of our manufacturer's videos are just better... and they work with us and are glad for us to have their videos listed. Thanks in advance
