Multiple domain names with similar content
-
Hi, we've got multiple domains that point to the same website and same content. The only difference is the currency and some text, you could say only about 5% difference in each domain's content:
http://www.redwrappings.com.au/
http://www.redwrappings.com/Will Google penalise us for having 95% similar content for each domain (they sell the same products but in different currencies)?
We shoudn't really put canonical link, should we? Because 5% of the content is different, which means they are not identical. What would be the best solution if this is a problem?
Thanks

Hi Alan,
Thanks for that. We do want to boost the rank on one domain compared to other domains, so i think this is the way to go.
Cheers

Hi Graham,
In my experience cannonical content issues can arise with content that is only 50% similar. The strange thing is that in other cases I've had content that is 99.9% similar that hasn't been flagged by search engines.
There is a trick for identifiying the possiblity for duplicate content issues. It's outlined in this video series.

There are three parts to the video, and I must admit it is quite cheesy but the information is solid.

I don't believe it's a penalty, but seems a lot of people have this same question. Google: "There's no such thing as a "duplicate content penalty." At least, not in the way most people mean when they say that."
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/09/demystifying-duplicate-content-penalty.html
If I remember correct Rand Fishkin says in this webinar that it's gonna hurt, but you may want to watch it to be 100%! I remember it being sometime after 40-50% of the webinar I think. http://www.seomoz.org/dp/pro-webinar-october-2010-with-rand-fishkin
Good luck!

yes it will be seen as duplicate,
yes i would use rel=canonical so that the one site is getting ranked, but then your other sites wont rank so well.
you could 301 redirect them all to the same site then do somthing iun the code to present the 5% of changes to the correct users.
but then you have the pproblem of .com not ranking as well as .com.au in Australia.
if you want to keep the .com and the .com.au then you really need to make sites that are differentunless you can afford to maintain 2 vastly diffeernt sites, and can afford 2 SEO campains, i would 301 redirect to the one url. if you have links pointing to both domains then doing a 301 redirect will assign all link juice to one site, you may see a boost in the search engines.

Will doing a 301 redirect for one domain to another give the latter domain the formers links?
I have some websites that I built a few years ago that are still in existence, but I no longer have access to the sites as they weren't hosted by myself. These sites all carry a "Designed by Me" text on the footer with a link to my (now old) website. I have since done 301 redirects on the domain names that are used in the footers of these sites so they link directly to my new site. However, will these websites now show up on Google Webmasters for example as external links to my site?

How do I handle duplicate content of the same product in Multiple product categories?
I am building a BigCommerce store for selling framed art. Many of the pieces of art will fall in more than one product category. Let's say I have a framed print of a photograph of a western landscape. This piece of art would fit into these categories; "western", "landscape", and "photography". I would have three pages with duplicate content for just this one framed print. Will google give me less page rank due to this? Can all the link juice be given to just one of the three categories by use of rel=canonical? If so, does anyone know how to do this for a bigcommerce site? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Kelly

Is pointing multiple domains to a single website beneficial for SEO or not?
A client has purchased many domains with keywords in each. They want to have us point each domain to their site for better SEO. Is this a good or bad thing to do?

What is best practice for redirecting "secondary" domain names?
For sites with multiple top-level domains that have been secured for a business or organization, I'm curious as to what is considered best practice for setting up 301 redirects for secondary domains. Is it best to do the 301 redirects at the registrar level, or the hosting level? So that .net, .biz, or other secondary domains funnel visitors to the correct primary/main domain name. I'm looking for the "best practice" answer and want to avoid duplicate content problems, or penalties from the search engines. I'm not trying to game the system with dozens of domain names, simply the handful of domains that are important to the client. I've seen some registrars recommend hosting secondary domains, and doing redirects from the hosting level (and they use meta refresh for "domain forwarding," which I want to avoid). It seems rather wasteful to set up hosting for a secondary domain and then 301 each URL.

Panda Update Question - Syndicated Content Vs Copied Content
Hi all, I have a question on copied content and syndicated content - Obviously copying content directly form another website is a big no no, but wanted to know how Google views syndicated content and if it views this differently? If you have syndicated content on your website, can you penalised from the lastest Panda update and is there a viable solutiion to address this? Mnay thanks Simon

A client will be translating their entire site into French in addition to English. For SEO purposes, should I host it on the same domain or create its own dedicated domain?
The current site is a long-standing site with good authority and a good number of links. Thanks....
