Hi Bristolweb,
In July of 2011, Google made a significant change in the information they actually display on the Google Place Page. You should still fill everything out that you can, but Google is only going to publicly display part of it. Rest assured, however, they see everything you've input. Here are 2 great Mike Blumenthal articles on the changes:
http://blumenthals.com/blog/2011/07/21/google-places-testing-new-layout/
Descriptions have returned in most cases, but other things like the old additional info and citations are no longer part of the public Place Page.
Hope this answers your first question.
Optimizing a Google Place Page hinges on 4 key things:
1. Adhere to the Google Places Quality Guidelines to the letter: (http://support.google.com/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528 *Note, this is the North American link. If you are located elsewhere, your guidelines may be slightly different. You should find them and memorize them and check back frequently because they do change).
2. Choosing the best 5 categories for the business
3. Writing a good description.
4. Being clear about the business model. Does it serve clients at the brick and mortar location, in which case you may show the address, or is it a go-to-client business model that must hide the address?
Once you've done this, gaining reviews and citations are the typical SEO work ahead of you. In my work as a Local SEO, it never fails to amaze me how many local business owners make this whole thing worlds harder for themselves than it should be because they don't read the guidelines. My rule-of-thumb advice is that the most important factor of an optimized Place Page is its lack of violations. It's also important to remember that, these days, the strength of the website is the top overall ranking factor in most local results.
Hope this helps!
Miriam

The last time I edited my places page there was small text that I didn't notice at first saying the changes would go through as soon as they have been reviewed. Unless someone can say for sure that you should be able to do something else, I would recommend just waiting a few days and checking back. This is assuming that you already took the steps to properly verify that it's your business to Google.

What to do when Google automatically replaces the page title.
Hello Friends, Might you all are aware of the scenario when Google auto generates the snippets for search results. But nowadays I am seeing some changes like google is showing some specific words in the last of search results title for every page of my website. It looks Google is treating those words as the brand name. I have tried many things to solve this but unfortunately, nothing works for this. Does anyone see the same changes? Can anybody help me out with this or suggest me the reasons behind this.

How can I get Google to forget an https version of one page on my site?
Google mysteriously decided to index the broken, https version of one page on my company's site (we have a cert for the site, but this page is not designed to be served over https and the CSS doesn't load). The page already has many incoming links to the http version, and it has a canonical URL with http. I resubmitted it on http with webmaster tools. Is there anything else I could do?

Why did google pick this page to rank over another one?
I recently started working here and I have noticed that google is ranking some pages over other for the main key word. Example: We are ranking on page one for ATV tires for this url http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/43/81/165/723/ATV-Tires-All I thought google would pick http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/43/81/165/ATV-Tires since it is higher up in the folders. I Have a couple reasons why the are picking the other one. Mostly from link signals from one other site and footer link.. Any other thoughts. If we want google to rank the second url instead what would you suggest?

Has Google stopped rendering author snippets on SERP pages if the author's G+ page is not actively updated?
Working with a site that has multiple authors and author microformat enabled. The image is rendering for some authors on SERP page and not for others. Difference seems to be having an updated G+ page and not having a constantly updating G+ page. any thoughts?

Indexed pages and current pages - Big difference?
Our website shows ~22k pages in the sitemap but ~56k are showing indexed on Google through the "site:" command. Firstly, how much attention should we paying to the discrepancy? If we should be worried what's the best way to find the cause of the difference? The domain canonical is set so can't really figure out if we've got a problem or not?

Does Google see page with Trailing Slash as different
My company is purchasing another company's website. We are moving their entire site onto our CMS and the IT guys are working hard to replicate the URL structure. Several of the category pages are changing slightly and I am not sure if it matters: Old URL - http://www.DOMAIN.com/products/adults New URL - http://www.DOMAIN.com/products/adults**/** Notice the trailing slash? Will Google treat the new page as the same as the old one or as completely different (i.e. new) page? P.S. - Yes, I can setup 301s but since these pages hold decent rankings I'd really like to keep it exactly the same.

Multiple Google Places listings under review
I have a client with a waste removal business who had multiple listings on his Google Places account for different service locations. Over the last four months I have been creating separate listings for each separate service location, each under a different Google account and with a unique business name, address, phone number and website URL. They have all been verified by postcard and listed separately in local directories so that they have citations. As I have been creating the new listings I have also been deleted the old ones to make sure they are not flagged as duplicates. 2 months ago all the listings in the client's Google Places account were placed under review. I made some changes and submitted it for re-review but no go with Google. Now all the new listings I set up have also suddenly been placed under review. About a week ago I noticed that information in two separate Google Places listings was being mixed up - for example, the website URL for one listing was being shown in another listing. There is no connection between these two listings other than that they were both set up from the same IP address so this seems very strange. I reported this to Google and asked them to sort it out, then all of a sudden I found that ALL of the new listings had been placed under review. So now my client has no active listings at all. He can't afford to wait another 2 months for Google to review all the listings again so I am wondering whether the best course of action would just be to delete everything and start over. Any advice would be most welcome!
