Can Location Information Decrease National Search Volume ?

Has anyone observed the effect on G organic traffic when a site which has little or no location information suddenly registers with the reputable "local" directories?
I am especially curious about results observations based upon G's behavior during the past several months.
It might be a hosting problem (the host is performing some non-routine mantenance) or possibly even a HUGE change in G's algo but I've observed a huge drop in my traffic after claiming a couple of the local listings earlier this week. Until then, I doubt G had associated my site with my city.
A couple of other explanations are possible but the timing leaves me to doubt it's a coincidence.

Miriam has a much better head for local than I do, but my sense of recent local updates (like "Venice") is the same as hers. If Google starts to treat a SERP as local, then being seen as local should help you and being seen as may hurt you. On average, I think we're seeing more SERPs being treated as having local intent, so generally getting Google to locate you should be a positive. Of course, for any given keyword, there could be exceptions (especially if you get a huge amount of traffic from a few broad, "head" terms).
Hosting issues can always cause short-term problems, and there have been a lot of shake-ups in the algorithm recently. Google is probably testing over-optimization updates (not full roll-outs, but we're seeing weird things happening), and they had a glitch on 4/17 that shook up some sites. They've also been hitting link networks hard, but I find it hard to believe that a handful of reputable local directories would be impacted by that. If you built up 100s of low-quality directory links and doubled your link profile in the process, that could be trouble. Adding a couple of directories to a solid profile should pose no risk.
My gut reaction is that there's more going on here than just local factors.

I've been working in Local for 5+ years and yours is a question I have seen asked frequently, but for which I have never seen an official study performed, the question being: does being local make you less national. All of the informal discussions I've ever had on this topic indicated a big no on this. Local is better thought of as an addition to your traditional, national SEO, rather than a detractor from it. So, my guess is that your ranking drop is unrelated to you claiming local listings (most of which take more than a couple of days to go into effect and ripple out onto the wider web anyway).
I do know that there have been some big changes reported recently...potentially an algo shakeup of some kind that has nothing to do with Local. I'm going to ask one of our expert traditional SEOs to pop by this thread to help you investigate possibilities for your loss of traffic. I would be very surprised if the local listings had anything to do with this. Hang in there!

Just throwing out some thoughts here...
Is it possible that your claiming the local directory listing propagated a duplicate listing to a major platform (e.g. Superpages > Google) which busted your clickthrough rate?
Or was the traffic coming in from national search queries and not local ones? Any discernible rankings drop, or traffic loss to a keyword group?

I've seen some local companies start to rank for non-geographic search terms due to this update. Because local companies are ranking, non-local companies have been bumped down the list.

Can my affiliate subdomain hurt in any way?
Hello everyone, My main website is: http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com Whereas the above site's related "affiliate" website is located on the subdomain below: http://affiliates.virtualsheetmusic.com I was wondering if having that "affiliate section" on a subdomain could affect the main website negatively in some way... or would be better to put it in a sub-folder on the main website, or even on a totally different domain. Why are these pages showing up as 404 in Search Console?

Google search results
I have been doing some searches on google to see where my new site shows up, I started using the search words "graphic design firm st. louis" as a gauge, because my title is St. Louis Missouri Graphic Design Firm. I showed up on about page 5 to start , if I include the word "firm" and a few pages further back if I just search "graphic design st. louis", without the word firm. It seemed i was slowly moving up pages with both searches and then a few days ago I jumped to page 1 for search "graphic design firm st. louis" the thing is it doesnt show up at all now if i search "graphic design st. louis" without the word firm. what would cause the one search to jump so high while the other one dissapeared completely?? and what can i do? my keyword density is same for both , any ideas.

Organic Google Sitelinks - can I edit?
A client just contacted me saying a competitor is threatening legal action threatened against a page description in a Google sitelink (just double checked and its in the serps results too). I checked the site and the content doesn't appear on that page or anywhere else on the site. I also added a Meta description to that page to see if that will have an effect. The page is the home page and I don't really want to demote it. Is there anything else I can/should do?

Sub-domain or new domain for new location
I have a small law firm in Dallas, TX. I will be moving to Austin, TX in the next 2 years. My website is doing great here in Dallas, but I have focused on keyword phrases that include the word "Dallas." I would like to leave my current website as is and maintain a Dallas office to keep the business flowing from this website. I am trying to determine the best way to get Austin business from a 2nd website. I know I will need new content that includes the use of the word "Austin". My question is: Should I put the new content on (1) a subdomain (i.e. austin.copplaw.com) or (2) a new domain (i.e. copplawfirm.com). I really want to be a player for the google local search results in both cities. I can use a different name for my law firm in Austin, if necessary. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Amazing decrease of visits in a Good Content Site
Dear Sirs, contributors and aspirants of Seomoz: I have a site called General History (http://general-history.com/) that was created in 2010, and has a current PR of 3, a DA of 23 and a home page authority of 32. It also has 1.690 links, knowing that we have not invested on link building, all the links were built manually via post inserting or viral via social shares. The thing is that in only 5 months, it passed from receiving 14.000 visits/per month to only 1.500. Is that a decrease of 700% in 5 months? I must admint that I earn my life offering SEO to companies, but this is one of my own sites, a site in which my 73 year old father likes to write about General History. I really think, given that he used to be a journalist, that the content not only isn't spam but it is high quality content. As I had Analytics, I started searching for the cause. The first question was... 1.- From what source did I loose the most amount of visitors? Organic, Paid or Social. The answer is organic by far. As I discovered it was an organic loss, I tried to find what content used to have the most visitors. I found 3 posts that brought 80% of the total traffic. How did the people find the content? Well, some of them found the site in the first page of google when searching for "Holocaust facts and figures" for example, but Analytics says that the most people came from image search in Google Images. General history disappeared from the SERPs but progressively, not from one day to another. So then I thought, It can't be a penalization. I contacted google and send them a reconsideration. 5 days later they answered saying that general-history.com is not a spammy site and thus it has not been penalized. For the ones who can read Spanish, here is Google answer: "Estimado webmaster o propietario del sitio http://general-history.com/: Hemos recibido una solicitud del propietario de un sitio para que volvamos a comprobar si http://general-history.com/ cumple las directrices para webmasters de Google. After receiving this, I thought I should get in the admin panel in wordpress and search for bugs, html or css, php errors and I found that somebody had hijacked my site, entering the wordpress panel and adding a code of into one of my landing pages.
