URL 404 errors after crawl? HELP!
-
I am getting Crawl errors. It shows multiple pages as. I know this is more of a technical question however, I cannot find the answer anywhere. I'm using wordpress
www.mydomain.com/title-of-page/mydomain.com/contact
WHAT IS THIS?!
-
Dan...
You may just be the man! It ended up being a widget created specifically for the theme, that didn't have the absolute path to the contact page. It was very simple to fix. Thank you

Thanks for providing the site name to me via PM - won't reveal the site here, but I see the issue.
The contact link in your footer should always lead to the contact page;
However, it is adding the subfolders of whatever directory you are in. If you are on the page
it is linking to;
In which, of course, no contact page exists at that URL.
You need to find where the footer links are being created in your WordPress setup - options are;
- Could be in the theme settings
- Could be in a widget
- Could be "hardcoded" into the footer.php file (although I doubt it)
And see if you can enter the link to the contact page just as an absolute link (not a relative link) explanation on this page
In other words, you want the link in your footer to ALWAYS point at http://www.yourdomain.com/contact/
If this does not fix it, you may need to go into the "editor" and find the footer links in the footer.php file - where you can change the link to reflect the absolute path of the contact page.
If still at a loss, contact the help folks for your WordPress theme, cause this sounds like a theme issue if the mistake isn't on your end, this definitely has nothing to do with Yoast.
Hope that helps!

Can you tell us (or me via PM) the site? The Yoast plugin is bulletproof unless something else is messing with it. I won't reveal the site if you don't want me to, but will post an answer back here in the Q&A.
Thanks!

Thanks Dan, I just ran that program (which was awesome) and yes i am still having errors. Im using a plug in by Yoast called Wordpress SEO plugin. Im still encountering the errors. Im thinking i need to disable the plugin all together.
So.... Not sure how to fix it. Do i redirect the bad URLS somewhere? (even thought they dont even technically exist?)
Any help is appreciated. thanks

Hi Christine
Just checking in here - are you still having trouble?
I would advise running the site through Screaming Frog and checking Webmaster Tools for the presence of the same crawl errors.
Screaming Frog should tell you if/where you currently have bad links on the site. Always good to double check with another tool.
Let us know, thanks!

I am using a plugin SEO by Yoast, i checked the structure in place, seems ok to me.
when i visit the pages, the error doesn't come up. only when the pages are indexed in crawled do i get those errors.
So I dont know where it is finding those links.

You simply forgot to put http:// before mydomain.com/contact

Also, if you want to PM me your login details I'll be glad to take a look.
You can check my tested eLance scores at atlantamedia.elance.com.... just so you know I won't mess anything up

Hi Christine,
This looks like some kind of misconfiguration in Wordpress that's probably being caused by your permalink structure. If you've installed any plugins lately that change your permalinks, try deactivating them and see if the problem remains.
Looks to me like the permalink structure or template is just repeating itself, so instead of going to yoursite.com/page it's going to yoursite.com/page/yoursite.com/page.
Should be an easy fix if you find the offending plugin or setting.
It could also be caused if you have manually linked to certain pages, and then changed your permalink structure, making the links that were correct before the change now point to pages that don't exist.
If you're site is working fine and you can't find the links pointing to the 404 pages, you can use Google Webmaster Tool's URL removal to stop them from being indexed, or add them to your robots.txt file via the Disallow command.
Hope this helps!
Anthony

Is the URL Matching the Page Title Important?
Hello I have tried searching for an answer on this but I can't get a clear answer due to the results when searching for URL title. I have just launched our second Shopify site for one of our brands. My first site launched in 2014 but when I launched I didn't pay much heed to SEO for page titles, URLs, etc so have retrospectively fixed this over time. For my Shopify site just launching I want to get it as right as possible from the start (learning from mistakes). My question is regarding URLs and what my approach should be for better SEO. So, I have a page with a Title of Newton Leather Wallets, Purses, Card Holders & Glasses Cases and the URL is https://www.tumbleandhide.com/collections/newton-leather-wallets-card-holders It was my understanding that I should try and make the URL reflect the Page Title more accurately. The problem is that this takes the character count to 77. On other pages it can be in the 80s. Will the above link be better for SEO than say just https://www.tumbleandhide.com/collections/newton I am just wary of the URL's being too long as my Moz Site Crawl is returning a lot of URLs that are too long. Thanks in Advance.

Static or Dynamic Home Page? Please Help!
Hi again 🙂 I ask for ur input again my friends I finally decided to go for the shorter .COM domain, and I put my domain online. Since it will be an online games site, every post will be in fact a new game. And of course, every game, will be in fact a post. I put my home page as "latest posts" this way, all my posts are shown in home page, and posts being for me games, all my games appear on my home page. So my home page always has the latest games and is always fresh. The theme I use has the option to ad some "static content" at the end of the posts, on home page, for SEO. I my home page I have also about 300 words of "article" content, that never changes, and is for seo, since my post content, is in fact java script, and other html codes ( flash games). So my home pages is that article plus excerpts of latest post. But the problem is, that I cannot control the seo, on page this way, and I cannot control my keywords very well, or the density of them, since the home page isnt a page. Now the question is, to let my Home page as it is, or change it and set it up as a page. I can put games on pages to, that is not a big problem. What is best, for the future of the site, google ranking, and seo, in ur opinion. I ad that I recived "A" Grade on moz for Page Seo Grade! Thank You!

Why so many crawl errors?
Our site is showing it has a ton of crawl errors in the back end, mostly concerning duplicate content within our blog. The content is unique however. We know this for certain because it's done in house or put together by some of the freelance writers we work with. The site is for an RV dealership and we're using a template-based system from a well known company. Any ideas on what may be causing this?

Directory site with an URL structure dilemma
Hello, We run a site, which lists local businesses and tag them by their nature of business (similar to Yelp). Our problem is, that our category and sub-category(i.e.: www.example.com/budapest/restaurant or www.example.com/budapest/cars/spare-parts) pages are extremely weak, and get almost no traffic, but most of the traffic (95+ percent) goes for the actual business pages. While this might be a completely normal thing, I still would like to strengthen our category (listing) pages as well, as these should be the ones targeted by some of general keywords, like ‘restaurant’ or ‘restaurant+budapest’. One of the issues I have identified as a possible problem, that we do not have a clear hierarchy within the site, so while the main category pages are linked from the homepage (and the sub-categories from here), there is no bottom-up linking from the business pages back to the category pages, as the business page URLs look like this: www.example.com/business/onyx-restaurant-budapest. I think, that the good site- and url structure for the above would be like this: www.example.com/budapest/restaurant/hungarian/onyx-restaurant. My only issue is, perhaps not with the restaurants but with others, that some of the businesses have multiple tags, so they can be tagged i.e. as car saloon, auto repair and spare parts at the same time. Sometimes, they even have 5+ tags on them. My idea is, that I will try to identify a primary tag for all the businesses (we maintain 99 percent of them right now), and the rest of their tags would be secondary ones. I would then use canonicalization and mark the page with the primary tag in the url as the preferred one for that specific content. With this scenario, I might have several URLs with the same content (complete duplicates), but they would point to one page only as the preferred one, while our visitors could still reach the businesses in any preferred ways, so either by looking for car saloons, auto-repair or spare parts. This way, we could also have breadcrumbs on all the pages, which now we miss completely. Can this be a feasible scenario? Might it have a side-effect? Any hints on how to do it a better way? Many thanks, Andras

Do Blog Comments On Your Site Help SEO?
There is a lot of debate as whether or not having comments on your blog is helpful from an SEO perspective. Proponents believe that more comments (1) creates more content, which search engines love, (2) creates more relevant keywords that can be searched, and (3) helps with "freshness" of the site/content leading to greater site authority. Others like Joost de Valk believe that comments can actually hurt SEO because keyword density cannot be controlled. He argues that his top SEO content are pages not posts for this very reason. What is your opinion?
