What to do with .net version of our domain name?
-
We recently bought the .net version of our domain name. Our plans are to use it for blogging and link to our .com site through it. Is this a good or bad idea? Why or why not? Is there a better use for the .net site?
-
Hi Kinsana,
It's almost always a good idea to start a blog! The more (quality) content you have, the better you will rank. However, I would reconsider your idea for two reasons:
- First of all, you generally want to concentrate the value of your entire website on one domain. This way your current website will all benefit from the SEO value you build with your blog. I'd therefore put the blog in a subfolder (www.example.com/blog/).
- I image it could be rather confusing for visitors to have two seperate websites for one company with exactly the same url (apart from the .net/.com obviously). Imagine a visitor landed on your blog via google and returns to your website the next day by typing your adress in the browser. The autocomplete function will send him to the .net version (based on history) and the visitor might not understand why your website seems to be nothing but a blog. If you are going to use two domains, at least make sure it's clear that one is a blog and the other one isn't.
Personally I agree with Adam, just redirect the .net to your .com and place your Blog elsewhere.
Best of luck!

301 redirect your .net to your.com.

Place your corporate blog in a folder (www.domain.com/blog) and not on a sub-domain (blog.domain.com) - this way you're blog will take advantage of the domain's authority.
As for linking back - you can do it this way too. PR transfers withing the domain too

I would recommend against using it for your company's main blog. Adding a quality blog to your main site is a very helpful way to improve your site. A blog should contain fresh content which is relevant both to your site and recent events. It is a way to bring in fresh traffic. Adding a blog to your main site will help increase the Domain Authority of your main site.
If you split your blog by adding it to another URL, a few challenges are created. First, you lose the advantages mentioned above. Secondly, you are linking from one site you control to another site you control which is not the type of link which Google values.
Otherwise simply redirecting your .net to your .com would be the current best practice.
It is a good idea to control the .net version of your site to better control your brand name. Depending on your hosting set up, you could use it to serve images or other content in parallel. I am not up on the latest site optimization techniques in that regard. Otherwise there is not much additional value owning the .net site offers.

I agree with Adam. 301 redirect the .net to your .com so you keep your link juice on your main site.
Many people use the .net versions as a safeguard to prevent competitors from using the namespace in the SERPs, especially on competitive keywords.

That's an OK idea. Personally, I would 301 the .net to your main domain and blog on your main domain. I'd rather have all your link juice pointed at the one domain.

Why do Domain Authority Scores vary?
Hello, When I look for bloggers from blogspot and wordpress portals, I find high domain authority scores on moz but if I check their individual sites without blogspot or wordpress I see a low domain score why is this? and is there a harm in selecting such sites? For example hypothetically : www.lizzie.blogspot.co.uk - high domain score & www.lizzie.co.uk - low domain score. Thanks & Regards, Sneha

I want to swop a site to an existing domain. i.e. it was http://A.com and now want it to be B.com...please help
The company I have started working for as two main websites. The main website (A) is out of date and not very functional but has the companies prime domain name. The other site (B) has their ecommerce engine. I'd like to make B the prime site i.e. take over A's domain name. Huge warning bells are going off regarding the SEO of this decision. Any advice or suggestions in how to go about this without destroying the company's SEO would be greatly valued.

BLOG, Sub-Domain or NEW Domain???
Hi, I have one online store using 2 differents domain: http://www.filtrationmontreal.com ( french language) http://www.furnacefilterscanada.com ( english language) A language switch at the top right of the store, give you access to a different language when shopping. I had to do this because, my shopping cart does not offert the possibilty to have a multyi-language store! Now I want to create a blog. What is my best option: 2 blogs with sub-domain. ex: http://www.BLOG.furnacefilterscanada.com and http://www.BLOG.filtrationmontreal.com one multil-language blog with a new domain linking to my online stores I would appreciate your advice on this. My goal is to increase traffic, rank better and increase sales by providing solid content on a blog. I will use Word-Press self host. I will buy a premium theme. I purchase themes from theme forest before. Do you have a favorite theme to suggest? Thank you for your help a support. BigBlaze

Question about SUB DOMAIN. step 1 says enter your subdomain? Create 1st campaign.
Does that mean the article in my blog address bar link? I have a blog with many posts focussed on different keywords. What does step 1 mean for me? Does it mean I should publish my post on my blog - copy the url in the address bar - and then enter it in SUBDOMAIN? Your help is appreciated. Thanks

Is framed content on another domain duplicate content?
I've read a number of articles and am getting opposing answers. I've been checking pages of Photo.net in copyscape for duplicate content. I'm finding a number of domains have the site iframed onto them. I was wondering why copyscape could read the content if the search engines supposedly didn't crawl iframes. Copyscape said Google can read the content. I just want to know if these sites need to remove the iframe (is it hurting Photo.net)? Thanks. Examples: http://www.copyscape.com/?q=http%3A%2F%2Fphoto.net%2Freviews%2F

Blogger & Blogspot Content - Move Across To Own Domain?
Hey, A few new clients have blogs hosted on blogger & blogspot, the first advice of mine is to set up a blog hosted on their company domain. It's usually easy to convince them of the benefits. What should happen to all the content on the existing blog? One blog in question has over 100 entries, good content with a lot of links back to the business domain. The blog itself has less than 10 links pointing in but a domain mozrank 3.5. In this example, my gut is telling me to leave it as is, and start fresh on the own domain. What about if there's less then 10 posts? At what point should the content be moved over to the new blog? Thanks for your thoughts.

What qualifies as a authoritative domain?
As SEOMOZ ranks Authority through percentage, at what percentage does a domain become authoritative? I'm looking for guest blogs/websites, which have a authoritative root domain to try and help increase our own auth and in turn rankings. So far I have found a few guest blogs, which have around 40-50% but I kind of think I need to find ones which are more like 70-80% for this to really work. Cheers

Best practise for domain redirect
Hi guys. I have a client that has one main site, with the domain IMOWOOD.PT (Portugal), and then we have the domain IMOWOOD.COM (redirecting to .PT). The problem is (that i verify using site:imowood.com) in Google, apeears that the domain .COM have a lot of indexed pages! This will penalize the 2 pages right? Because the duplicated content (?). What i want to know is... if i have 1 domain (the one i want to be index) what should i do, to do a proper redirect from the .COM to the .PT, making the .COM not indexable? Right now the .COM only redirects @ index page. Dont know why... I've used the domain redirect @ my cPanel. So... whats the best practise for domain redirect? Thanks!
