AB Testing - Organic Rank
-
Hello,
Currently We are running an A/B test on a few pages, the footer and the header on our site. I was wondering what is the proper way to do an a/b test so that our google rankings won’t fall and that Google will only index one version at this time?
Thanks

looks like the split testing is affecting our yahoo rankings. anyone experiencing the same issue?
-
Always split test with Google Website Optimiser as said above! The integration with Analytics is the cherry on the top for me!
-
OH! Sorry, I misunderstood. Solid way of doing this.
-
No, Page A is live and linked to internally. Page B is live both with no links, blocked by robots.txt file and has noindex tag. When I have my data on page A, I redirect it to page B and then remove the robots.txt block and noindex tag on page B. Page B begins blocked but ends up allowed and when it is allowed page A redirects to it so you never have two near identical versions of a page both live and indexable at once.
-
What happens is both end up blocked?
-
Yeah, I absolutely agree with Josh. Thumbs up, Josh!

Hi dMoon,
Cut right to the chase and use Google's own tools Try Google's Website Optimizer to handle your A/B tests. Everything will synch up with your analytics and provide a slick report in the dashboard.
Happy testing

Are you split testing with Google Website Optimizer or another tool?
-
When I do this I make two pages at two different URL's. I only show one of them at a time while the other has a noindex tag and is blocked by search engines. When I have gathered data on the first version, I redirect it to the other page which has the new header and footer. This way I only have one version of the page at a time in Google's index. When one comes out of hiding, the other is redirected to it so I never have two live indexed pages that are essentially the same.
Probably other ways to do this, but that's just my method.

Does anyone know of a tool where you can get all of the keyword that any given landing page is ranking for?
I'd like to find out what landing pages are ranking for which keywords, but I haven't been able to find a tool that does it. I was hoping there would be something where I could submit the url and get a list of every keyword it is ranking for. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

Unexpected ranking
We recently built a page for a client which consisted of a one paragraph of about 30-40 words, We weren't expecting this to rank, but it has ranked at #3 on UK Google. So, we are now trying to work out the likely reason for this, as pages which we have optimised do not rank this well. We realise there are a number of factors which influence ranking, but on this particular page we have a news module at the bottom of the page containing 8 short intros to other related content. Could it be that search engines are ranking for the main content shown by the menu link and the 8 short intros associated with that main content? Hope that makes sense. Thanks Ian

Which speed test to use?
Hi so I have a very easy question I think. I am too new to seo stuff to know better, but which speed test site is the best? I have a construction website. My issue is I am getting mixed results. Pingdom is showing <dl> <dt>Load time</dt> <dd>1.18s</dd> </dl> <dl> <dt>Requests</dt> <dd>22</dd> </dl> <dl class="last"> <dt>Perf. grade</dt> <dd>94/100</dd> <dd>Gt metrix is showing 98/87 with a 2.13 load time.</dd> <dd>And it varies from when I do it.</dd> <dd>So which do I go off of?</dd> <dd>With pingdom, I feel pretty good.</dd> <dd>With gtmetrix I feel like maybe I could improve.</dd> <dd>I ask because I have been looking into a cdn, but because its like learning a foreign language to me, I do not want to go there unless I have too.</dd> <dd>Thank you for any advice on which speed test to view as most accurate</dd> <dd>Chris</dd> </dl>

How on earth does this rank?
Hi Everyone, Im speaking to someone about doing decent SEO, follwing the basics and not doing dodgy stuff for the short term. He is a driving instructor trying to rank for driving lessons peterborough (this is in the uk) and one of the websites coming out towards the top of serps is ian-rayner.com/index.htm. Its got no links, no social signs, has a page labelled SEO Stuff with a whole list of keywords and internal links back to his home page. It has a Domain authority of 11 and page authority of 1 !!! Is it because no one is following the basics and uncompetitive that its ranking or is he doing something other than a few keywords in the content, meta title and description, and a internal links that im missing?

Can a page lose ranking because it has too many bold tags?
I run a product search website for the Engineering Sector. Each of the companies listed on the website has a profile page. This page used to rank very well in google. Over the last couple of weeks these pages disappeared for google i.e they fell about 20 to 30 spots in the search results for relevant keywords like the Manufacturer Name. I was trying to analyze the page and found that Each of the Categories that the manufacturer supports was listed in "bold" and linked to the page for that category. A manufacturer can support up to 20 or 30 categories so this results in about 20 or 30 Bold keywords. Is this a bad practice? Could this be a reason for a drop in ranking or do bold keywords on a page not matter? What are your views?

What is important for page rank?
I have heard quality is the most important factor for page rank but after the 7 Nov 11 PR update I am no longer a believer. The PR on my home page dropped from 4 to 3 and the rest of my inside pages remained the same even though I have added a significant amount of content since the previous update and kept it fresh. Any thoughts on this most recent PR update?

Does targeting more than one keyword or keyword phrase effect rankings?
Hi, We have a homepage where we are targeting three main keywords. 'Cheap books', 'buy books' and 'used books'. We are ranking well for cheap books and making progress on the more competitive buy and used. My question is how many keywords can you reasonably rank for on one page. We are targeting other keywords on other pages and having some success - but is three the maximum or is that too many?
