Large Drop in Direct Traffic
-
We recently experienced a large drop in direct traffic. Search and referral traffic remained steady but direct traffic dropped by over half. I'm having trouble pinpointing what would have caused this drop. Any ideas or suggestions for investigating the cause in a drop of direct traffic?
-
Not sure if this is it, but I have found that if something gets shared via Addthis (i.e. on FB, Twitter, email, etc.) that the visits that come as a result get counted as direct. Is it possible that you have had a drop in social shares?

Sweet answer. I would add that it could be that you've turned off re-targeting, social or some other form of advertising that was getting eyeballs but not clicks.
However see Mat's answer first because he's hit the nail on the head.

Sudden changes in direct traffic can be down to tracking issues. Direct is always a weird one, as it is almost a label for "don't know".
Changes in how you tag links can have an effect. If, for instance, you start adding campaign tracking emails to your mail traffic that was previously showing as direct could switch to email. Another one I have seen mess with the figures is redirects.
Questions I would start with are:
- Has total traffic changed?
- Have any other sources had a corresponding upwards trend (you mentioned search & referral - anything in campaign?)
- Any changes on site corresponding with the change?

Increase in Direct Traffic plus Bounce Rate rise for all traffic sources
Hello, I work for an agency and we have seen a big rise in bounce rate for 4 of our clients which happened on the exact same day. This rise on bounce rate is across all traffic sources. We are also seeing a big increase in direct traffic, starting on the same day. Is it possible for bot traffic to affect the bounce rate of all other traffic sources? We have ruled out double reporting in GA but can explain how the bounce rate has increased for all traffic sources. How is this linked to the rise in direct traffic (in some cases as high as 500%)? Thanks

Bing Referral Traffic
We do not get referral traffic from Google, only organic. Why do we get both organic and referral traffic from Bing?

Google referral traffic drop around 14th July 2014 (UK). Anyone else seeing it?
We've seen around a 25% drop in Google referral traffic from the 14th July 2014 onwards and having real trouble identifying why and from what search terms we're being effected. WMT and Moz Pro don't show any movement. Is anyone else seeing the same thing on UK search terms? Seems a bit late to be the effect of Panda 4.0? Any help would be amazing. Thanks.

Number of clicks / organic traffic - different data in Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools
Hi. I have a little problem. When I open Google Webmaster Tools I see 3000 clicks (in Traffic - Search queries - Clicks). But when I open Google Analytics I see much more visits from search engine (Google) - it´s 4-5 times more! It´s a huge difference, don´t you think? Do you know, where is the problem? What causes this diffence? thanks a lot

SEO traffic had significantly dropped
I know this question has been asked before, but I'm hoping someone can address my specific issue. We recently did a complete redesign of our site and moved it over to a new server. The site was even "down" for about a week, where we had a static splash page. However since relaunching (it's not been over two weeks) we've seen a significant drop in search engine traffic. We are using Yoast for Wordpress. The site is The Tech Block. Could anyone see if there is something we're doing wrong? Thanks
