What Should I Do With My URL Names?
-
I release property on my blog each week, and it has come to the point we will get property in the same area as we have had in the past.
So, I name my URL /blah-blah-blah-[area of property]/ for the first property in that area right.
Now I get a different property in that same area and the URL will have to be named /blah-blah-blah-[area of property]-2/.
Now I'm not sure if this is a major issue or not, but I'm sure there must be a better way than this, and I don't really want to take down our past properties - unless you can give me good reason too, of course?
So before I start getting URLs like this: /blah-blah-blah-[area of property]-2334343534654/ (well, ok, maybe not that bad! But you get my point)
I wanted to see what everyones opinion on it is
Thanks in advance!

If, as Collin says, you are not in to deep you could change them and 301 the old to the new and then going forward you could just use the new format.
-
Nice, so simple! Doh . . .
I think it's possible to change all the URL's automatically as well with permalinks, is that right?
I guess that is not a good idea though as the current links are all over facebook, twitter, etc and it would be a MISSION, to say the least, to set up 301's. Not to mention losing juice.

Hmm, didn't think of that to be fair. Nice

I would suggest reformatting your URL structure to something simpler before you get too far in to change it.
For example, URL.com/ [area of property] / [date blog published]
Date was just the first thing that sprang to mind, you could use any unique and relevant info about the specific property you're discussing. I would pick something to use initially and try and stay as consistent as possible.

Would it be possible to just add the new property to the old page without removing the old property? Just add the new one above?
Sorry if this sounds stupid but the old page will already have trust etc...

Is there a problems with putting encoding into the subdomain of a URL?
We are looking at changing our URL structure for tracking various affiliates from: https://sub.domain.com/quote/?affiliate_id=xxx to https://aff_xxx_affname.domain.com/quote/ Both would allow us to track affiliates, but the second would allow us to use cookies to track. Does anyone know if this could possibly cause SEO concerns? Also, For the site we want to rank for, we will use a reverse proxy to change the URL from https://aff_xxx.maindomain.com/quote/ to https://www.maindomain.com/quote/ would that cause any SEO issues. Thank you.

Image URL Change Catastrophe
We have a site with over 3mm pages indexed, and an XML sitemap with over 12mm images (312k indexed at peak). Last week our traffic dropped off a cliff. The only major change we made to the site in that time period was adding a DNS record for all of our images that moved them from a SoftLayer Object Storage domain to a subdomain of our site. The old URLs still work, but we changed all the links from across our site to the new subdomain. The big mistake we made was that we didn't update our XML sitemap to the new URLs until almost a week after the switch (totally forgot that they were served from a process with a different config file). We believe this was the cause of the issue because: The pages that dropped in traffic were the ones where the images moved, while other pages stayed more or less the same. We have some sections of our property where the images are, and have always been, hosted by Amazon and their rankings didn't crater. Same with pages that do not have images in the XML sitemap (like list pages). There wasn't a change in geographic breakdown of our traffic, which we looked at because the timing was around the same time as Pigeon. There were no warnings or messages in Webmaster Tools, to indicate a manual action around something unrelated. The number of images indexed in our sitemap according Webmaster Tools dropped from 312k to 10k over the past week. The gap between the change and the drop was 5 days. It takes Google >10 to crawl our entire site, so the timing seems plausible. Of course, it could be something totally unrelated and just coincidence, but we can't come up with any other plausible theory that makes sense given the timing and pages affected. The XML sitemap was updated last Thursday, and we resubmitted it to Google, but still no real change. Anyone had a similar experience? Any way to expedite the climb back to normal traffic levels? Duplicate content across internation urls
We have a large site with 1,000+ pages of content to launch in the UK. Much of this content is already being used on a .nz url which is going to stay. Do you see this as an issue or do you thin Google will take localised factoring into consideration. We could add a link from the NZ pages to the UK. We cant noindex the pages as this is not an option. Thanks

I have an issue with duplicated pages. Should I use cannonical tag and if so, how? Or should change the page titles? This is causing my pages to compete with each other in the SERPs.
