How do i know if my domain has given penalty by Google and why?
-
I have problems with my website to google search results. Some of the important keywords frequently and sharply rankings vary a lot lately.
For example;
07-14-2012 Term1 Position #12
07-20-2012 Term1 Position #38
07-24-2012 Term1 Position #10
07-26-2012 Term1 Position #40
I wonder what is the cause of this incident? Is there any Penalties? If there is then how do i know this?

Whenever I notice big fluctuations in rankings the first thing I do is note what changes I have made directly to site around the time of the change.
I also check for any recent algorithm changes to see if anything coincides with the drop.
There's an articles on the SEOmoz blog which you may want to look at:

Hi Ben,
I am using Google Webmaster Tools and SeoMoz Tools for tracking and ranking, and also doing it manually. I am using a temp-cleared and unlogged browser for checking results.
On the other hand, this is not a new issue. I have come across with this problem for about 3 months.

If you are penalized you would get a notification in Google Webmaster Tools.
Also is you do a site search for your domain, it should come up. If not at all, it might mean it was impacted by Penguin.
-
There could be so many causes for these fluctuations. First off, are you using software to track the rankings or doing it manually?
Note that there's lots of personalisation that can affect rankings such as location, if you're signed in to a google profile and if you have visited the site before. If you were doing this manually these could be affecting the results.
If it's not this then it may have been caused by changes to the site. Have you made any recently?

Domain authority a better metric then referring domain count?
Hi Guys, When reviewing competitors what would be a better metric - Referring domain count OR domain authority. From my understanding DA is a indication of the quality of the link profile. So if a site has a high DA this is a better metric for comparison then referring domain count. What are your thoughts on this? Cheers/

Domain transfer
Hi Everyone! I work for a company that had a new website built through a digital agency and that website went live 2 months ago. I have only been with the company for 2 months and find myself under the gun, because they are not coming up in organic search results that they used to. The old domain was 301'ed to point to the new domain. There were also 1 to 1 redirects set up to transfer the old page authority to the new, equivalent pages. In everyone's experience, how long does it take for a domain to start populating for search terms that it used to? I know there are mixed reviews on 301 transfers and how much of the old domain authority is preserved when you take this route. What is your experience? Just looking for some answers. Thanks in advance! John

When i search for my domain name - google asks "did you mean" - why?
Hi all, I just noticed something quite odd - if i do a search for my domain name (see: http://goo.gl/LBc1lz) google shows my domain as first result, but it also asks "did i mean" and names another website with very similar name. the other site has far lower PA/DA according to Moz, any ideas why google is doing this? and more inportantly how i could stop it? please advise James

Consolidating two separate domains and redirecting towards a new replatformed domain
A client has two different sites selling the same products with the same content, they would like to replatform onto Magento while redirecting those 2 sites to the new URL. The question is, besides monitoring the 301 redirects is there anything else to take into consideration when consolidating two sites into one new site?

301 redirecting staff Domain to Company Domain
My colleague owns a domain (A) for about 10 years that he does not use. The domain's content is the same as my company's website (B) content.

Question: Can I 301 redirect domain A to domain B's homepage or is it better he just closes down his website since this would not be SEO best practices? thank you0 -
Need to know if this could be dangerous
We have recently launched an store, and we had created 301 redirects from the old product pages to the new ones. But we found that the new website performance was a quite slow, and that it would improve a lot if you add a number at the end of the product page url. But that implies to change the 301 redirect and to add a new one for the pages that has already been updated by the search engine. I mean. www.store.com/oscommerce/catalog/productpage.html has been now 301 redirected to www.store.com/sectionname/productpage this was 48 hours ago. But now, (I know it, we should check this before...) we need to change the url to www.store.com/sectionname/productpage/5487 this way the performance improves a lot. But we are afraid of doing two 301 in just 48 hours. any advice?
