ECommerce and microdata
-
Last year I rolled my own online shop and I included schema.org microdata for all the products. My Google ranking continued to improve during that period, but I was doing a number of improvements, so I can't say how much was due to the microdata.
My store continues to grow so I moved to an eCommerce solution. I opted to go with Volusion. Much to my surprise, about the only SEO feature they have implemented is SEO friendly URLs. They have not implemented microdata, which is pretty surprising given that all their sites are geared towards products. I would think it would be very easy for them to span the product name, description, price, etc, with a product schema.
I called CoreCommerce, a Volusion competitor, and they have not implemented microdata either.
Why are these large eCommerce providers ignoring microdata?
Are there eCommerce solutions that have implemented microdata?
Do large online retailers like Amazon and Buy use microdata?
Is there any data that shows the SEO benefits of implementing microdata for an online store?

Amazing! The question from Christopher was posted in 2012. 2 years later, Volusion still seem to be running years behind as far as online marketing goes. They have a reasonably good system for building an ecommerce website, but when it comes to online marketing, they struggle.
- They have still not implemented Microdata for products.
- Not only that but their Google Shopping Feed has to be Manually published, instead of allowing the feed to get updated periodically, like daily etc.
- They do not support all the latest fields and attribute details that Google Merchant centre now offer such as Mobile Links, Attribute Lengths
- Making Availability mandatory (which was enforced September 30, 2014)
- and so much more.
For Basic ecommerce the Volusion product seems great. As soon as you wish to really start utilising resources outside Volusion, Good Luck!

Amazon uses Schema with their products. We use product Schema on our eCommerce sites. My belief is that it will help from a rich snippets pov and simply that this is something the search engines want. The best way to get people to adopt is to show that it helps. That's my opinion anyway.

Thanks for the info and the link to the testing tool.
To be fair, I should add that Volusion has added rich snippets for reviews, and that's certainly a step in the right direction. However, companies rolling out a new shop typically have products and no reviews, so the product snippets could be used from day one if they were implemented.
I did come up with a hack to add a schema.org description to each of my products. I'll continue to look for a hack that allows me to put meta data around all product features like price and availability, but product description will have to do for now.
Best,

I don't have answers to all of your questions but I might be able to shed a little light on them.
I've not seen any major studies that show the benefit of microdata specifically on rankings. However when you look at the area of rich snippets for eCommerce as a whole then I have it on good authority (but haven't seen the data myself) that you can expect an increased CTR from having some forms of rich snippet. Whether you implement that change using microdata, microformats or RDFa is irrelevant. Here's one study I found.
I would hazard a guess that many eCommerce providers appear to be a little slow to implement microdata into their product because although Schema.org has been live for over a year microdata has only provided any tangible benefit in Google since April 2012 when Google updated rich snippets for products.
If you want to find out if a specific retail is using semantic data (again not just microdata in this case) then just take their product page URLs and paste them into the rich snippets testing tool.
Hope that helps a little.

Ecommerce site in Europe
A client is looking to expand their ecommerce business into Europe. They have already purchased a number of European brand domain names and want to start their expansion in Ireland. Is it better to have a single website with pages translated for each language or a seperate site for each domain/country? With Ireland the only obvious difference is the currency, language shouldn't be an issue. But if we choose seperate sites for each domain/country will having the same product content/descriptions especially in the case of Ireland be an issue? Thanks in advance

New ecommerce site: Close old site and full domain redirect or keep it linking to new site?
We have rebranded and are working on our new site (B). Our old site (A) has a much higher domain/page authority than our new site. Currently we have the original Site A still there, with all links/pages pointing to the new Site B when people click. I am unsure whether we'd be best to close down the Site A completely and do a full domain redirect to Site B. Site A: 10 years age and has a moderate amount of links to it.

Homepage - PA: 24 DA:11 Site B: 6 months age, few links
Homepage - PA: 1 DA:2 My concern with the full domain redirect is that the indexed/ranking pages would dissapear. The benefit is less brand confusion for our niche range of party accessories.0 -
Should Our Mobile Responsive Version of our Ecommerce Site include the on Page content to Help with Rankings
Hello All, We are soon to launch our new redesigned website along with a mobile responsive version but i have noticed we currently don't include the on page Content we have on the mobile version which we have on the desktop version to help with rankings etc. I am not sure how google does mobile research with regards to rankings. We have designed our responsive version to be as user friendly as possible at the expense of having to much clutter/content but I am wondering now , if we will rank on mobile if all our on page content isn't present. Just wondered if we should include it at the bottom of the pages with say a "Read more" extension to help avoid clutter? Any advice greatly appreciated thanks Pete

ECWID Ecommerce Sitemaps (Lack of)
Does anyone know if the lack of sitemaps on ECWID built sites is a negative for SEO? Does Google somehow index these sites and do they penalize because sites can't include the urls in sitemaps? Also, any idea how to build a sitemap to include ECWID shopping carts?

Ecommerce platform
Hello all, My digital agency is starting to focus on building mainly bespoke ecommerce platforms. I've used a variety of open source platforms over the years, most of which I find un satisfying - specifically Magento (as the framework is very cumbersome). I do appreciate that many SEOs love magento, especially with the shopping cart control - being able to track conversions and customer data handling onsite Etc. My question is, what do ecommerce specialist SEOs and CROs want from a good ecommerce platform please? Thanks William

Ecommerce SEO - product sort order
Hi, I've been trying to find the answer to this in google but having no luck. In the current era, is it damaging to have products ordered randomly in an ecommerce website? Also, how long would you suggest is a good length of time to establish your natural rank? Ive launched and still work on several succesful ecommerce sites, but have recently launched a completely new venture - brand new url, brand new site and it has been live for around 5 weeks now, and although it is being found in search, it isnt doing as well as i'd like using the moz pro tools ive picked up some issues and have in the last few days tweaked page titles, added 'nofollow' to all my filters, added content etc, so I feel as though ive reset the clock. the site (it's an adult site by the way) is www.lovesauce.co.uk - would appreciate some feedback from the pro's

Finally have a budget for a great seo ecommerce site but need help choosing wordpress, joomla, modx, magneto or? Thank you in advance for your generosity of time
We finally have a budget and want to dump our intuit/homestead site www.originalartbroker.com Our budget is 5k-10k but could do more if needed. I am slowly catching my competition with this homestead site that I built. But I do realize it is time to step back, figure out what is best, and hire a pro to get the job done. I am green in the seo and web development arena so please go easy on me and please help to point me in the right direction. Just went out on a limb a couple years ago playing with homestead.com site software and built what we have today. Didn't know anything about website development...it sort of just happened. I feel and know that homestead.com solution is hindering what we could be doing due to the bloated nature of the site and inability to perform such task as 301 redirects etc.... I have been able to slowly attain first page seo rankings on keywords based of the artists we carry using this po-dunk homestead platform to build my site after a ton of work education thanks to seomoz and a lot of you. But, have never asked for help and could really use some generosity of time in explaining a solution that would work best for our business. Do we just go with a wordpress site that is similar to our current setup and use their plugins? Do we use a cms software solution like magneto or joomla? We will only have 200-300 pieces at any given time. We are constantly selling and buying new pieces providing us content. We are need of a site that can perform well in terms of seo. I have heard of a lot of people talking about joomla, wordpress, and magneto. Would like to be able to have a product catalogue that ultimately sends whatever inventory we are uploading to our social sites and blogs so I don’t have to pump the product out to all of these sites. We offer free custom framing with our pieces and it would be nice to have a program that could wrap the photos of the pieces with the different frames for our customers. When I add a new piece I would like this software to have a predesigned product page that it plugs the information into. I would like it to create the url extension based of the artists name, medium used, and piece name to create unique and individual urls. I would like it to also create its own H tags throughout that product page according to the artist name description, and medium used. I would like to be able to sink this up to google merchant and other sites to carry our product. Bottom line is we sell art. We sell pieces by specific artists. We are constantly buying and selling. I need something powerful that keeps up with our content
