Can someone take a quick look at my blog?
-
hey guys, just joined seomoz. was wondering is someone could take a quick look at my blog and see if it is fine to start hitting SEO hard? my top bar title has a few of my targeted keywords, is that a good idea or?

If you're using Yoast, it will set up rel=canonical automatically. That's not a bad thing, it's just letting you know just to give you a heads up. Don't worry about that.
I think it's fine to promote. One thing I would do, just to make sure your 404 errors are taken care of, it install webmaster tools (if you haven't already) and make sure no other 404 errors come up.
Looks good though!

thanks for pointing that out! I have fixed that now, I recently started using YOAST SEO and ticked the strip /category from the permalinks settings. ( followed a guide from the SEOMOZ blog.

ye well does it look good enough to promote. is the layout fine as in footer links etc? I got around 85 rel conatical notices so wondering if the linking of the website is messed up. Don't want to be building links to posts that will need to change link wise in the future, if you get me?
thanks for quick response!

Not sure exactly what you mean. Are you asking if the blog looks good enough to start promoting, or specific advice for where to go from here?
Let us know. We're happy to help!
And, if I understand right, yes you want keywords in your title tag. That's one of the most significant on-page factors you can utilize.

Ranking over someone else who has your branded domain name
Hello! I have a client who has been in business for a long time, but was very late to the game online. As a result, the branded domain for his business (for explanation purposes I'll call it "Houston Tan"*) was already taken when he decided he needed a website, however it was not being used. He approached the company that owned "houstontan.com" and they refused to sell it to him. Not only that, they turned around and opened a company and developed the website using his trademarked company name as one word instead of two, "HoustonTan." It was brought to court and the judge determined that since they created a new name by combining the two words, there was nothing that he could do. Still having to create a website for his company, he chose the domain "HoustonSunTan.com." Not sure who was advising him on that one. So now he has a domain name with only a partial match to his company name. As you would imagine, when you search Houston Tan, HoustonTan.com is number 1, 2 & 3, and HoustonSunTan.com is #4. My question is, do you think it is even possible for his company to overtake the top spot of Google? Or have you ever come across a situation like this and if so what worked for you? FYI: Even though it says Houston, the company is a global company in over 500 cities (with one 800 number unfortunately), so local SEO strategies wouldn't necessarily apply. *Names are made up to protect both parties 🙂

Is it OK to include name of your town to the title tag or H1 tag on a blog to enhance local search results
I recently attended a webinar by ETNA Interactive on local search SEO. The presenter recommended including the name of your town in the title of the blog to increase local search SEO. Is this OK? Ive always been concerned that it is such an obvious attempt to rank locally that Google would consider it "spammy" ? black hat, "sketchy" or otherwise manipulative. Have the rules changed? Is it OK to do? Brooke

Moz showing 384 description duplicates on my ecommerce store.... when I download CSV, most pages are coming from my WordPress Blog, why?
Hi, I am trying to investigate why I am getting 384 description duplicates on my ecommerce store (www.doggie-diva.com)? When I download the CSV file from MOZ, the majority of the pages they refer to are pages from my Word Press blog, which is hosted on a different server (blog.doggie-diva.com). I do have a link from my website to my Word Press blog and vice versa. Can you please explain to me why this is happening when I don't have duplicate content? Example of a page flagged from www.doggie-diva.com with duplicate content (http://blog.doggie-diva.com/tag/dog-gymnastics. Thanks, Rachel <colgroup><col width="549"></colgroup>

Blog on Subdomain vs. Subdirectory - Best Practices
Hi, I have recently been told that it no longer impacts authority or rankings if a blog is set up on a subdomain (blog.domain.com) rather than a subdirectory (/blog). However, I am reluctant to do so because I remember learning how blog subdomains did not adhere to SEO best practices. Would anyone be able to shed some light on the latest SEO best practices regarding this topic? Many thanks, Erin

Domain and subdomain comparison - a deeper look into the subdomain metrics
Hi all, As I'm doing an analysis on our site and our main competitor (both sites are quite big, with active forums), who is much larger than we are, I have found out that : Our site has the strongest domain authority: 34, competitor: 33. Competitor beats us on 6 out of 8 areas in the sub categories for the "domain authority" category We beat our competitor in 8 out of 8 sub categories for the category "sub domain metrics" Now, as the title for this question suggests, I would like to hear what your thoughts is on this. Remember that our competitor is way bigger than us - how can they do so bad on the sub domain metrics, compared to us (and everybody else, I guess)? What are your thoughts on this? Please be aware that the domain shown to the left in the screen shot is our competitor. Thanks a lot - all comments are very much appreciated! yUbrX.png
