Which is better for Wordpress multisite SEO? Subdomains or subdirectories
-
Hi,
I've always used subdomains when setting up a WordPress Multisite + Buddypress website. But which is better for SEO?
Now I'm thinking this may not be a "one size fits all" websites decision:
Case 1: The subsite blog owners need/want/pay/ to advertise their own business using their subsite. Subdomains are perfect because they can SEO their own site seperate from other client sites, yet reap benefits from the home buddpress site SEO.
Case 2: The subsite blogs are for hobbyists so they are not promoting their own site with SEO, at least they don't need to. However, using subsites subdirectories will enhance the content and SEO for the main Buddypress site by treating them all as content of the main site.
I would appreciate hearing from those with more expertise.
Regards,
Larry

Hi Larry,
Ah, the age old question of subdomain or subdirectory.
You are right, there really isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. From what I've seen, I think the subdirectory is usually a better answer for SEO but I don't think the subdomain is a horrible answer.
A subdomain is really a different site with only limited connections. It might have a different branding or a different focus than the main site. If your point is to create a really separate website, then using a subdomain makes sense. However, if it really is a separate site altogether, I'd opt for a separate domain so you can make that intention of treating these as different sites crystal clear.
If the sub-site is a part of the same site (same company, same brand, it connects to content on the rest of the site), then I would opt for the subdirectory. This makes it easier to keep all the content connected within the site and any links or social activity you get to pages in that subdirectory is more likely to help other parts of the site. So, for that reason I would opt for a subdirectory instead of a subdomain.
I hope that helps. Thanks,
Matthew

Social Media & SEO
Hi Does anyone have any good articles or case studies on how SEO/Social compliment each other? I know the benefits, I just need something tangible to show management, which justifies me spending more time on it. I currently do a lot of onsite SEO, but I know we're missing the content marketing/social media aspect and it's something I want to push. Any help would be great 🙂 Becky

Youtube and SEO
Hello, For a game site I would like to use Youtube for SEO purposes. And I need a little advice on this. How would you use these video's without spamming? There are a lot of tactics to use Youtube. Create channel and put your desired url in the profile (link back to your site), Put your desired url in in the description of the video (link back to your site), Put the created youtube video also on your own site to drive traffic to youtube, and back. And get views. Put a created channel on your own site to drive traffic to youtube, and back. And get views. Other tactics I don't know.... Can someone advice me what tactics I can use without spamming, I'm afraid that if I use combinations of the above mentioned tactics I get an unnatural linkprofile.... Thank you in advance. Twitter and SEO
Hello Mozzers, I am trying to determine the effectiveness of using twitter as an SEO tactic. A site in my niche (healthcare job boards) is ranking very well for a handful of head terms. Their backlink profile is okay, but not amazing. But one thing that stands out to me is their approach to twitter, http://www.physemp.com/socialTwitter.html. It looks like they send an automated feed of their jobs to these specific twitter handles. Each of the handles has over 2,000 followers (some are legit some are bots). The site ranks for some highly competitive head terms (see attached). Can any of their ranking success be attributed to these various twitter handles? Is Google seeing these twitter feeds and associating high follower count and high tweet frequency with the URL attached to each account? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Thanks in advanced! lMbkS

Employing Pinterest for SEO gain.
Hi I wanted to see if the SEO team have had any feedback from members who have started to use Pinterest. I've had it for a month or so now and I've been adding pins every day since - (quite addictive actually). What is interesting is the gender element to the people who are following and repinning my pins and boards i.e. female. It would be interesting to understand why this the case, why is it so popular with female users. Ultimately I'm tyring to guage the benefits of employing Pinterest for SEO purposes and whether its worth keeping it in my arsenal of social tools. Any insights welcome. http://pinterest.com/visualizations Best David

MyBlogGuest+Wordpress+Onlywire = viable semi automatic blogging?
Do you guys recommend I pursue this combination? I want a semi-automatic (spend a few minutes a day picking interesting blog articles) blog and to automate its promotion. Is there anything else I could be doing? Also this combination doesn't seem to post to facebook pages well. I'd like to also add buttons to like/tweet/ etc, right on the blog. What are some best practices for this?
