301 or rel con ?
-
OK should I use 301 or rel can for a page that has a mox authority of 50 (PR5) and some links into it? Do I do it to the home page or do I do it to the revelant page? If I rel con or 301 using a php script in the header of the page do I leave the content on the page or do I remove everything?
This is in response to last friday.
Do I 301 all the pages to the top 5 pages that have been getting all the traffic, or do I leave some if most of them are or marketing?
-
Got hit on Friday, and am affraid I have some duplicate content pages, so we are going to send them to their approiate page.
We also have 30 or 40 pages that are just for keyword ranking, and since friday hit I am under the impression that google is puttin more emphasis on the entire site and ranking the site as a whole and not just each page, so the thought is to 301 the marketing pages.
the marketing pages are seo moz trust 50 have a PR5 so I hate to do anyting with them, but we took a huge hit on friday and I am desperate. our busy season starts in 5 days AHHH!

I may need a little more information to answer completely but my short response is this.
- 301 redirect if you would like both search engines and end users to be transfered to the new page
- Rel con if you would like end users to stay and search engines to be transfered to the new page
What is the reason for the update? Solely for SEO purposes or migrating to a new site?
Cheers - Kyle

Rel canonical on other page instead of duplicate page. How Google responds?
Hi all, We have 3 pages for same topics. We decided to use rel canonical and remove old pages from search to avoid duplicate content. Out of these 3 pages....1 and 2 type of pages have more similar content where 3 type don't have. Generally we must use rel canonical between 1 and 2. But I am wondering what happens if I canonical between 1 and 3 while 2 has more similar content? Will Google respects it or penalise as we left the most similar page and used other page for canonical. Thanks

301 redirects
Hi, we have an old site hosted by company A. We rank for certain terms in google for certain brands and products. Now we have developed a new website on a new domain hosted by Company B. If we are 301'ing at brand/product/page level from old to new, who is it that should perform this job? Is it Company A or B, old or new? And does the physical website need to remain hosted for the 301 to work and for our SEO ranks on the old site to not fall apart? Company A think we can do an excel mapping doc for each link from old site to new. Hand file to Company A and they host this file (not the actual website) then we transfer old domain to Company A as well. Then the 301s will work fine. Yet Company B think we should continue hosting with Company A, keep the old physical site live and put the 301s in place. They say if the 301 link has content behind it then it will help or not take the chance of having the SEO affected? Who is right? Do you need the old website to remain live once 301s in place or can this 301 config file hosted on a domain be all we need to do? Any other ideas welcomed. Thanks

301 a purchased domain
I've purchased a competitor. They rank well organically for keywords that I target, and I want to optimize the way I get value from their current rankings and traffic (and customers -- we will obviously market to their email/customer list). Which is better: (1) use a 301 redirect for any access to their domain and point it to my home page. I think this would force Google to de-index all of their pages, right? (2) put up a stub page as their homepage that announces the site has been bought, and have a do-follow link to my home page (which maybe is auto-redirected after 10 seconds or something)? Maybe this is better to keep their home page in Google's index for a while? As for option (1), I thought I read somewhere recently that 301'ing a domain to the home page of another domain would no longer pass link juice (?). Maybe I should 301 the newly purchased domain to a sub-page on my site that explains the acquisition and asks them to sign up on my site? Both sites are legit. No spamming happening here; just industry consolidation as one competitor acquires another. Thanks in advance...!

301 Redirects
Moz pro have crawled my site a few times now and is reporting 105 cases of 301 redirect. Looking at some examples IE http://www.indigocarhire.co.uk/faq/young-driver-car-hire/bromley redirected to http://www.indigocarhire.co.uk/faq/young-driver-car-hire/bromley/ only difference i can see is the traling /.... there is nothing set up in webmaster or in the website itself, so how come this and another 104 are being flagged as 301 Appreciate any help or advice Thanks

Long term plan for a large htaccess file with 301 redirects
We setup a pretty large htaccess file in February for a site that involved over 2,000 lines of 301 redirects from old product url's to new ones. The 'old urls' still get a lot of traffic from product review sites and other pretty good sites which we can't change. We are now trying to reduce the page load times and we're ticking all of the boxes apart from the size of the htaccess file which seems to be causing a considerable hang on load times. The file is currently 410kb big! My question is, what should I do in terms of a long terms strategy and has anyone came across a similar problem? At the moment I am inclined to now remove the 2,000 lines of individual redirects and put in a 'catch all' whereby anything from the old site will go to the new site homepage. Example code: RedirectMatch 301 /acatalog/Manbi_Womens_Ear_Muffs.html /manbi-ear-muffs.html

RedirectMatch 301 /acatalog/Manbi_Wrist_Guards.html /manbi-wrist-guards.html There is no consistency between the old urls and the new ones apart from they all sit in the subfolder /acatalog/0 -
