I have created 5 model specific blog sites which deliver links to my core site.
-
I post about 500 words of unique relevant content weekly to each model blog site. Each week, seo smartlinks delivers keyword anchor text links to my core site with a 3% keyword density. I have been doing this for 3 months and my core site traffic is stagnant or slightly down. Is this a good practice since its relevant content, or am I writing for nothing? Also, am I in danger of over optimized anchor text?

There are many ways of building links. The only limit is your creativity. I wrote an answer a couple of weeks back to a similar question, it might help...

Glad you are finding SEOMoz useful - there's a great community here and staying ontop of things is easy because there are so many people doing their own testing and sharing results.
By the way, don't do too many press releases. Try one every couple of months maximum.

Thank you. The sites are new, and traffic and domain authority is low. Page rank is great for my target keywords but the only reason I wrote them was to try to reach a new market that my core site hasn't been able to reach.
They are hosted separately from the main site.
My content is good, but I'm not sure if very many people are interested in knowing all the details I write about.
Thanks again.

Thank you. Finding seomoz has been humbling, but having such good feedback is exactly what I needed. Other than press releases posting on other blogs, is there anything offsite that I should be doing?
Thanks again.

As stated already by other comments a few times, this method is very dated and will more than likely see your sites flagged as a spam network built purely for the purpose of link building (which is exactly what you have built it for)...
I would recommend removing ALL links to and from each site. Every single one.
However, there is probably no need to take the sites down, that's a little hasty.
If they are hosted on the same server then run them all separately as individual websites, write content on each and allow some nice guest posts on them. You can throw a couple of adverts on them and earn a little bit of £ if that is your ultimate goal.
If they aren't on the same server then you can use them as link bait. Write articles (good quality is the key here, as always!) for other websites and include a natural link back to your main website. If the website you want to host your article want something in return - for essentially giving you a link, offer them a guest posting opportunity on any of your other 5 websites. That way you both benefit from a backlink...
On a side note... SEO Smartlinks? Come onnnn.... you can do better than that! That is pretty much spam in its highest form! Maybe you should read up on Penguin and Panda and understand the clear goals of the algo updates of the past couple of years. Google's war on spam is a big deal!
Good luck

Do your model blogs have any traction of their own? What's the traffic and domain authority like? If they don't have any traction of their own, they're probably not worth much at all.
I'd argue that a single, well thought out guest post on a high authority website (e.g. SEOMoz, Sitepoint.com, etc. but something relevant to your niche) will be worth more than 10 posts on your "blog network".
Are your mini-blogs all hosted on the same C-block as the main site?
P.S. When you say "unique" I really hope you mean unique, and not spun!
-
Thank you for your advise. Are my model blogs worthless, or should I just remove the links and keep posting? My content is accurate and unique.
I also post press releases on prlog and freepressrelease and I submit slideshare.
Do you have any other ideas for placement of my content in addition to my core site?
-
Thank you, I will be changing my strategy. The content is accurate and unique on the sites, is it advisable to just remove the links or shut down the sites?

Like David says,
What you're creating is a link network, which is a rather dated method of going about your link building. After the recent algorithm updates that sort of tactic really got hit hard.
High quality guest posting, press releases and other brand building exercises are going to put you in far better stead as far as your link building and SEO goes.
I've tried to change my focus with SEO this year. I now concentrate almost exclusively on establishing myself as an authority/expert and almost ignore "mechanical" link building methods. I believe that while I'm providing good quality stuff to a wide range of people, the links will come.
I also think that if you're still concentrating on keyword density then you're doing something wrong.
Write naturally. Show people why they should like you. Profit.

It'll likely be/get flagged as a link network, it's not a good SEO practice.
You'll be better off spending the time writing awesome content for your core site and looking into guest posting opportunities.
Good luck.

Relaunching a site that has had thousands of posts linking to the same 20 articles. How to properly setup internal linking?
I'm in the process of relaunching a music news site (www.prefixmag.com) that once did quite well in search (over a million monthly search visits in its prime). The site got crushed by Panda, etc. and we stopped updating it. I'm starting to do more research but one thing that I noticed was we have modules in the right rail (desktop) that are found on all of our article pages that point to the same posts. (Edit: Added attachment. The links in the right rail under Editor Picks, Features, News, Media, etc. are found on every page of the site). In other words, we have thousands of posts that all link to the same 20 or so articles. Should we not do this if we're not trying to emphasize these posts in Google? Assuming this is the case, what is the proper way to do internal linking? Do we simply setup a sitemap and link to it? I'm hoping to have the thousands of articles we've published over the years have a chance to rank in search again. Also, we have a number of posts that are thin in content should those pages not be submitted in the sitemap? Thanks in advance! 2KmX0

What are inbound links worth after Panda and Penguin, since a site ranks for the NATIONAL keyword "outdoor furniture" with ONLY 7 INBOUND LINKS!?!?
ARE INBOUND LINKS TODAY ALMOST WORTHLESS??!!? After having been the KING of SEO, down to the toilet? Today I got a great sample from a fellow SEO professional showing a site, rockymountainfurniture.com rank for "outdoor furniture" with ONLY 7 INBOUND LINKS FROM 3 DOMAINS and a domain trust of 14!!!! ON A NATIONAL, VALUABLE, HIGH QUERY VOLUME KEYWORD!! I was stunned, but is this the "NEW SEO WORLD" we live in, so we should skip spending hundreds of hours on link building? There are over 32 different types of inbound links but this is much MORE than a radical change, this is turning SEO as it was up-side-down. Any input, thoughts, ideas?

Someone not removing a link to our site
Hi Mozzers, We recently worked with an SEO company that bought a few sitewide links without our permission which caused us to get a huge slap by the last panda/penguin update. We managed to remove most of the links except one site (The biggest one).

Site not responding well to Link Building
I worked on around 15 EMDs and all of them have similar template but different content. They are all two KW EMDs. Now I did KW research and changed Title tags and Did around 10- 15 links for them in and they all reacted very well to link building except one site. I did the link building for this site in 3 batches- 7 links in first 10 days, then another 7 in next 10 days and another 7 links after 7 days. Site's ranking decreased with each link building. Then I removed the low quality links recently. Now What do you guys suggest should I again do link building?? (though everytime I did link building site lost rankings as mentioned earlier) or WHAT IS THE NEXT STRATEGY AFTER REMOVING BAD LINKS? START LINKING AGAIN, WAIT FOR SOMETIME ?

5 Million Links?
Hi all, I've been hired as the chief marketer at a (very) high traffic web company. Ironically, I don't have much SEO experience but I have been able to figure out PPC, on-page SEO and SEO content generation pretty well over the last few months. What I don't get is link building. My question is this; we're trying to move from the 3-4 SERP slot to the 1-2 SERP slot for a short list of keywords. My boss asked me to get busy with link building. Our competitor has over 2 million external links and we have roughly 60 thousand. What do I do? How do I start? Is there a legit, white hat way to get this job moving? Any insights would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Best to create a new blog as a subsection or as a new site?
Our company has a blog "feature" or "theme" that we'd like to publish every week at least. Should we create a subsection of our current company blog? Or should we register a new domain specifically for the feature? The latter would allow us to do some linking back to the main website, and would probably be good in terms of future career flexibility / personal branding for whoever writes it. Things to keep in mind? Anyone have any suggestions? Best practices? What should I do?

Links from low PA pages on high DA sites... What effect do they have?
My company's website has inbound links from very high DA websites (LinkedIn 96, Yelp 91, etc.) but from pages with very low PA (1). These low PA pages are the company listings pages. In the case of Linked In, there are several products/services listed with ideal anchor text to the relevant pages on our site. How do these links effect our overall ranking and trust, and why aren't they listed when I use OSE to analyze my pages? Thanks!
