Optimizing the homepage : should I have a h1 or not?
-
Hi everyone,
I am launching a debate that may seem a bit basic for the most experienced of you
In fact, after completing internships in two different agencies, I had quite opposite views of the optimization process for the homepage:
-
View 1: The home page should be optimized on a keyword and should definitely have a h1.
-
View 2: The home page is a branded page and should not necessarily have an h1 (unlike other pages).
Bonus question: assuming that the view 1 is the right one, is it a good idea to put a h1 on the logo (only for the homepage) ?
Thank you very much for your help

I believe the answer to almost every question about SEO should begin with "it depends" and therefore I think neither of the two views you have quoted can be right in all circumstances.
The best solution for a particular case might depend on the structure of the page and that should be driven first and foremost by providing the best solution for visitors which may not be the same as prescribed by an SEO rule book.
Re. bonus question:
My home page (www.adjuice.co.uk) has its logo as its H1 so is an example of what you describe in your bonus question. The home page currently ('touch wood') ranks very well for lots of competitive terms so I find it difficult to imagine that this arrangement could be disadvantageous in any way.

Well I would say a page always needs an H1. However, due to recent turn of events with Google in does not necessarily have to have your keyword in it. But it should be an H1 that is on-topic. Google is clever enough now to tell the general context of the page. As Rand said in the last whiteboard friday (HERE) there is now a lot more to on-page SEO than the old method of keyword in the url, title, description, H tags etc etc

Microsoft IIS SEO tool claims I have no H1... It's not true.
I have 4300 pages that the tool claims are missing the H1 value but they are there. Here is an example: http://antiquebanknotes.com/rare-currency/first-national-bank-atlanta-illinois-2283.aspx/ Has anyone seen this before?

Is alt text inside an img tag inside an h1 the same weight as text directly inside the h1?
Right now I use a background image and CSS to tie the h1 tag to my logo on each page. However, I am concerned that may not be best practice. Plus, I am interested in using schema markup on my logo. So, my question is, if I use an image with alt text inside my h1 tag, will the alt text carry as much weight as a text-based h1?

Is it ok to use H1 tags in breadcrumbs?
A client has an e-commerce site and she doesn't want a page title on the products page. She has breadcrumbs though. Her website developer suggests putting the H1 on the breadcrumbs. So: products> Gifts > picture frame with h1 tags round the word "picture frame". Is this ok to do? Or is it a bad thing for SEO purposes? Thanks

Duplicate homepage content across multiple websites
Hi, I work for a company that runs 30+ membership based websites on separate domains and across multiple markets. The homepage for each site contains a section of content that highlights the site benefits and features. While each website serves a different market/niche, this section of content is essentially the same as each website offers the same benefits and features. What is the best way to avoid duplicate content issues while still being able to show the same section of content across 30+ sites? This particular section of content isn't valuable from an SEO perspective, but the rest of the content on that page is. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

PR of homepage when other pages have more lniks
This is going to sound like such a newbie question. I don't know how I've been doing SEO all this time and haven't come across the answer. It's usually true that a homepage will have the most backlinks, but what if it doesn't? What if an internal page has more links? Is it possible for an internal page to have a higher PR than a homepage? Additionally, if I do on-page SEO for many internal pages of my site, will it only help those particular pages or will it give the whole site a boost, thus making the homepage rank higher in the SERPS?
