Why is there duplicates of my domain
-
When viewing crawl diagnostics in SEOmoz I can see both "www.website.com" and a truncated version "website.com" is this normal and why is it showing (I do not have duplicates of my site on the server)?

Hi All,
I have just altered my Google Webmaster tools in the Config (as per Geoff's advice above) and that appears to be fine for now. However, I have also updated my ".htaccess" file dong a 301 redirect, details below:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine onRewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. [NC]
RewriteRule ^ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]I also have recently changed my pages from .html to .php do I redirect by using this code as I want all old links to now refer to the .php file:
RewriteRule (.*).html$ /$1.php [R=301,L]
Lastly, Thomas on the canonical side of things, is it necessary for me to implement this in the Head?
How can I see if the work completed is correct or check that it works?
Paul.

Ok, I have implemented the Google Webmaster redirect. and now I have tried the edit to the .htaccess file trying both options below with no success.
Option 1:
AddHandler php-stable .php
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]Option 2:
AddHandler php-stable .php
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.klinehimalaya.com/$1 [R=301,L]Neither seem to be working when viewed here:

Thanks

Hey Mat,
Another question. If I have changed a page address from:
http://www.klinehimalaya.com/packages.html to
http://www.klinehimalaya.com/packages.phpwill I also need to redirect the pages I have changed from .html to .php or is this not needed because I have not changed the file name prior to the prefix?
Thanks.
Paul.

You can set the preferred domain just like Geoff mentioned. But basically since you have a www version and a non www version it can be seen as duplicate content. Although the site is only one website and changes will appear on each the URL structure changes for depending on if you use the www or non www and therefore it looks like duplicate content.

I have checked out your website we you may not have implemented the 301 redirect correctly. In addition you should use Google Webmaster tools along with
rel="canonical"
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-advanced-relcanonical-http-headers
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394
Add a
rel="canonical"
link to the section of the non-canonical version of each HTML page.To specify a canonical link to the page http://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish, create a element as follows:
Copy this link into the section of all non-canonical versions of the page, such as http://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish&sort=price.
If you publish content on both http://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish and https://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish, you can specify the canonical version of the page. Create the element:
Add this link to the section of https://www.example.com/product.php?item=swedish-fish.

Hi,
If I was you I would go into Google Webmaster tools and verify both versions of the site, then go to Configuration >> Setting >> Preferred domain and tell Google your preference.
You will need to do this with both verified versions of the domain. You can then delete the listing for the one you do not want
You will only need one Google Verification code.
That will sort the issue with Google

You have fixed the redirect loop, but the initial problem still exists. With the urgent issue now fixed (I can see the site now!) let's look at the problem:
You don't actually have a live problem at the moment, so any fix here will not improve your results. However you have a potential problem - one that could occur and cause you problems later. It's not hard to fix, so it is good to get it done.
Your server (like many) is set up to serve the same files to both klinehimalaya.com and www.klinehimalaya.com, which are technically different addresses. If google followed a link to klinehimalaya.com and a link to www.klinehimalaya.com if would find the content at two seperate places and could index both and consider them to be duplicate. Yes... all those PHDs and Google is still that stupid.
What you need to do (and I think you were trying to do this) is to pick one version of that address as the one that you are going to use. You can then redirect traffic from the other version to the chosen version.
In fact anythinghere.klinehimalaya.com is also serving up the same site, so you should fix the lot in one go.
If you are running apache (most sites are) then you can do this with an .htaccess redirect . There is a good example of how to do this at the top of this page: http://dense13.com/blog/2008/02/27/redirecting-non-www-to-www-with-htaccess/
In short it checks to see whether the address being loaded starts with www. . If it doesn't then it loads that version via a 301 redirect.
The issue Ross has pointed out is separate and not fixed by this. You should do both.
I hope that helps.

You are linking to your home page via your logo in the header.
However you are linking to this address http://www.klinehimalaya.com/index.php try linking to this address http://www.klinehimalaya.com/
This will remove your duplicate content issue.
-
Think I just fixed the redirect, but I still have an issue in SEOmoz where it is still pulling up both references to:
http://www.klinehimalaya.com/index.php
klinehimalaya.com/index.phpApparently this will effect my SEO efforts, hot to fix!!!
Thanks all!

I tried to look at this for you, but you have some issues on your site that are stopping me viewing it completely.
Both klinehimalaya.com and www.klinehimalaya.com create an infinite loop that prevents the page loading. klinehimalaya.com is correctly 301ing to www.klinehimalaya.com
However www.klinehimalaya.com is redirecting to itself.
You need to fix that URGENTLY. Start by looking at your htaccess file.

You need to do a 301 redirect

Is repurposing an old sub domain better than creating a new sub domain?
We have a good sub domain like** art.ourwebsite.com** which currently sells custom canvas art. We have owned the domain since 2013 but it has only been live for the past few weeks. We want to redesign & repurpose the page to continue to sell custom canvas art but will eventually include other merchandise like mugs, tshirts, etc which wouldn't be custom. Would it be best to keep art.ourwebsite.com since is a shorter/more memorible & older sub domain or would it be best to update the name to something that encompasses our new products? Our marketing team has suggested yourart.ourwebsite.com

Disavow to all domains?
Hi there, I have several versions of my domain setup in Webmaster tools. Should I upload my disavow file against all of these domains? For example.....

If I find a link pointing to: http://www.mydomain.com from: http://www.somespammysite.com do I need to add a disavow file in Webmaster tools for all my domain versions or only the version the offending links points towards? So... Only
http://www.mydomain.com
Or
http://www.mydomain.com
http://mydomain.com
https://www.mydomain.com

Handling of Duplicate Content
I just recently signed and joined the moz.com system. During the initial report for our web site it shows we have lots of duplicate content. The web site is real estate based and we are loading IDX listings from other brokerages into our site. If though these listings look alike, they are not. Each has their own photos, description and addresses. So why are they appear as duplicates – I would assume that they are all too closely related. Lots for Sale primarily – and it looks like lazy agents have 4 or 5 lots and input the description the same. Unfortunately for us, part of the IDX agreement is that you cannot pick and choose which listings to load and you cannot change the content. You are either all in or you cannot use the system. How should one manage duplicate content like this? Or should we ignore it? Out of 1500+ listings on our web site it shows 40 of them are duplicates.

Duplicate Content
Crawl Diagnostics has returned several issues that I'm unsure how to fix. I'm guessing it's a canonical link issue but not entirely sure... Duplicate Page Content/Titles On a website (http://www.smselectronics.co.uk/market-sectors) with 6 market sectors but each pull the same 3 pages as child pages - certifications, equipment & case studies. On each products section where the page only shows X amount of items but there are several pages to fit all the products this creates multiple pages. There is also a similar pagination problem with the Blogs (auto generated date titles & user created SEO titles) & News listings. Blog Tags also seem to generate duplicate pages with the same content/titles as the parent page. Are these particularly important for SEO or is it more important to remove the duplication by deleting them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Avoiding Cannibalism and Duplication with content
Hi, For the example I will use a computers e-commerce store... I'm working on creating guides for the store -
Technical SEO | | BeytzNet
How to choose a laptop
How to choose a desktop I believe that each guide will be great on its own and that it answers a specific question (meaning that someone looking for a laptop will search specifically laptop info and the same goes for desktop). This is why I didn't creating a "How to choose a computer" guide. I also want each guide to have all information and not to start sending the user to secondary pages in order to fill in missing info. However, even though there are several details that are different between the laptops and desktops, like importance of weight, screen size etc., a lot of things the checklist (like deciding on how much memory is needed, graphic card, core etc.) are the same. Please advise on how to pursue it. Should I just write two guides and make sure that the same duplicated content ideas are simply written in a different way?0 -
Domain authority not showing on root domain?
I was going through our site earlier w/ the mozBar (still learning the tools, new here) and saw the attached image. There were far more links to the subdomain (#s on the left) than the root domain (#s on right). This is strange to me, because we are not using any subdomains. All links point to either our root domain or subfolders off our root domain. Is this hurting our ranking for the root domain? Not sure what's up with this. Zz9j0.jpg

Migrating a better performing domain to a less well performing domain
I have a customer who has many domain names and assets but she's wanting to consolidate some of them to help her simplify things for her customers but mostly she wants to build up her website through which she sells products. Grief Reflection - www.griefreflection.com is a personal journal that she's keeping to process the impending death of her husband and it's also linked to her business website which sells healing from grief types of products. Storybooks for Healing - www.storybooksforhealing.com is the website through which she sells workbooks and memory books for people who want to keep the memory of their loved one alive after they've gone. I've setup both of these domains as campaigns and have been looking at the metrics for both. The grief reflection blog out performs the storybooks for healing website. If we merge the two then the Grief Reflection blog would likely become a subdirectory under www.storybooksforhealing.com and be more fully integrated which she thinks will help her visitors not get confused while navigating her website. www.griefreflection.com has 12,637 links while www.storybooksforhealing.com has 1,462. Also, Google has indexed 380 pages of Grief Reflection and only 100 pages for Storybooks for Healing, though that may be because there are fewer pages to index. Grief reflection also has a 4.36 mozRank and 5.30 mozTrust, where Storybooks has 4.13 mozRank and 5.15 mozTrust. Should I counsel her to keep these domains separate? If not, would simply setting up 301 redirects from the www.griefreflection.com domain name to the new subdirectory under www.storybooksforhealing.com be the way to go? Thank you ever so much for any wisdom anyone can provide.

Using hyphenated sub-domains or non-hyphenated sub-domains? What is the question! I Any takers?
For our corporate business level domain, we are exploring using a hyphenated sub-domain foir a project. Something like www.go-figure.extreme.com I thought from a user perspective it seems cluttered. The domain length might also be an issue with the new Algorithm big G has launched in recent past. I know with past experience, hyphenated domains usually take longer to index, as they are used by spammers more frequently and can take longer to get out of the supplementary index. Our company site has over 90 million viewers / year, so our brand is well established and traffic isn't an issue. This is for a corporate level project and I didn't have the answer! Will this work? anyone have any experience testing this. Any thoughts will help! Thanks, Rob
