If I hired you/your company to do my SEO ...

If i hired you or your company to do SEO for my site (http://goo.gl/XUH3f) what would be the first steps you'd take?
I'm pretty sure i've covered all of the basics myself, I'm just left trying to figure out what i should do next... rankings have been going up and down for the last few weeks, but even when they're up, they're not high enough (and then they go back down anyway) ...
I know some of you are going to say build links, please at least give me an example of one or two sites you'd try to get to link to mine...
I'm open to any advice or feedback as I'm just a website owner who's been doing their own SEO & learning on the fly...
Thanks a lot!

Category pages are PR0. They are higher competition and therefore harder to rank. If the site is new it might take some time to build up juice and trust.
-
Thanks for the advice, i truly appreciate it
Anything else from anyone else?

you can use the brand name, not needed that many times for SEO since that's your domain names. I don't feel the homepage is really stuffed.
Regarding your homepage, let the bounce rate tell the story. Everyone has an opinion, use AB testing and path analysis to get the bounce rate as low as possible.
All your category pages appear to be PR0. Is this a new site, looks like it was registered since 06 but maybe was parked all that time and not a site? New sites take time, PR and incoming links are important for rankings.
Lose the keyword tags on the pages, useless and slightly stuffed, can only hurt won't help.
<meta name="<a class="attribute-value">keywords</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">plastic bins,plastic storage bins,plastic storage containers,plastic containers,bins,bin,shelf bins,quantum bins,plastic shelf bins</a>" />

Agreed - A full audit covering SEO related issues and usability is required.
I do feel that focusing on SEO when there are much more glaring issues would be a pointless exercise.
Generating traffic to a website is not an effective use of time when the landing page isn't optimized for conversions.
I would suggest hiring a graphic designer for some freelance work and working with someone on a full audit to prioritize the biggest issues.
I'd be surprised if the site is generating quite a large volume of sales as it stands. It just doesn't convey trust and reliability from my perspective.

Irving, the funny thing is that i rank well for most of the individual parts, type any part on my site into google and you'll see that... It's the category pages and subcategories i'm having the issues with....
Mark, every now and then someone says my homepage is a mess and the design is bad... however for every 1 person that says that, i get about 5 that say the opposite and actually tell me they like the layout and it's actually a very well designed site....
In regards to the text at the bottom of the home page, how is that stuffed with keywords? 1) Monster Bins is the brand name, should i not use it on my site, 2) every last piece of text in that box at the bottom of the page is written properly and not just put there to have keywords included, it is all there to explain exactly what we do and who we serve and it's in proper english 3) There are no keywords in that text box that are overused, according to SEOMoz's general rules about keyword stuffing....
any other feedback from anyone?

it's not as bad as many sites in terms of keyword stuffing and those are really easy fixes.
you bring up some good usability issues though. the site could definitely use a full audit.
-
To be honest, the homepage is a bit of a mess. I know you rather not hear it but, your site needs a lot of work.
Visually it's quite off-putting and the very large section of text you have on the homepage is stuffed full of keywords.
This is how Google sees this page -
'Monster Bins' is bolded and used over 10 times.
It's not clear what payment method your website accepts and to be quite honest, I would be very hesitant to make a sale on there.
-
Well it's not a mess like a lot of sites we see, no major glaring issues from a technical standpoint.
Here is the biggest piece of advice i can give you. You rankings should mostly come from long tail searches for people looking for certain types of bins my guess would be, yet your particular product pages are not properly optimized for rankings. For example
http://monsterbins.com/snt180-2710
"snt180-2710" in the URL should be something more descriptive like
http://monsterbins.com/genuine-stack-nest-blue-totes
or if you need the product number to make URLs unique: http://monsterbins.com/-genuine-stack-nest-blue-totes-snt180-2710
and the title tag, url, and H1 tag should match in the exact order (assuming "Genuine Stack Nest Blue Totes" is your target - just showing as an example)
<title>**Genuine Stack Nest Blue Totes** | 18x11x6 | SNT180-2710title>
and the name should be in a h1 tag
NOT <p>SNT180-BL Genuine Stack and Nest Blue Totes - 18x11x6p> RATHER <p<span class="start-tag"> </p<span>>SNT180-BL # **Genuine Stack and Nest Blue Totes** - 18x11x6 p> You do have some product information on the page in the tabs which Google can read so that is good.
Also homepage is only PR1

Hi Prime85,
The reason you won't see increases past those pages is simply because you have very little outbound links coming to your site. You can do all the work on-site but if your keywords are semi-competitive links are important and procuring those high quality links are what will drive you up the rankings.
Thanks,
-
Thanks Irving... I'll have a look into the nofollowing strategy and we'll make adjustments...
Just out of curiosity, if you say my site appears to be doing things properly, why do you think my rankings are not improving, in fact, they either remain steady (on pages 3-5) or decline..
-
looks like you're doing pretty good at a quick glance. a couple of things:
a) make the social media buttons open in a new window so the user doesn't get kicked off of the site
b) why are you nofollowing nav pages like contact us and blog. When you nofollow you throw away that PR, better to pass the PR instead of discarding it. Nofollow is for linking to external sites not internal. Page rank sculpting stopped working for nofollow when Google decided nofollow means PR still gets split equally on the page but not passed.
c) catalog page has no catalog http://monsterbins.com/free-catalog/

SEO rank down after Magento migration
Since November we migrated our shop from Magento 1 to 2 and our organic traffic has dropped by 50%. We still haven't figured out the cause (or a solution). Are there more Magento users who have the same issue? Charlotte (www.dochorse.nl)

Mobile SEO
Hey, In the following article, Google recommended using a 301 redirect but doesn't specify why. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/making-websites-mobile-friendly.html I assume this is to pass over link equity to the relevant mobile/desktop variation. Can anyone confirm this? Also is there any other reason? Again assuming this would keep the correct URLs in the correct index? Anything else anyone can chip in would be great. Thanks

SEO Strategy for Microsite
I am working on a project to build a microsite of sorts that will represent a joint program between two large organizations with established web presences and strong domains. Each of the organizations has dedicated sections on their sites speaking to the program, but the leadership has decided the joint program deserves it's own site with dedicated content. The two larger sites perform very well for SEO, and I don't necessarily want to jeopordize thir rankings by delivering content that competes directly with them. So I am doing some keyword research to find some opportunities that will alllow me to use the new site to target keywords not yet being captialized by the larger sites. My grand scheme is to have the three sites targeting the broadest array of keywords possible, thus maximizing exposure and avoiding competition. Here is the rub: the content between the three sites will be different but very similar, and there will be plenty of cross linking, especially from the existing sites to the new site, as we grow the brand of the joint program. I'm curious to here some expert opinions on what the puitfalls of the strategy are and what are some of the things I can do to avoid falling in the black hat category - I recognize that proliferating sites around a single topic and cross linking them is black hat. The organizations simply want to build a brand around a joint program and we are striggling to do that without a dedicated website.

Sitelinks in 7-pack / blended / local results
I have a client who has been ranking well in the 7-pack for local searches, for 1.5+ years. I recently noticed a competitor's Google Places link has little sitelinks attached, but my client's link doesn't have them. This makes me sad. To provide a concise question: what can I do to help my client get sitelinks along with his Google Places listing in the 7-pack / blended / local results? Some example data: My client's business is called Ambiance Dental and his website is www.mycalgarydentist.com. An example search to see what I'm talking about is "calgary family dentist". The competitor that's showing sitelinks is www.aestheticdentalstudio.ca which has a title of "Dentist in Calgary | Cosmetic Treatment in Calgary". The sitelinks you'll see are "Dr. Gordon Chee", "Links", "Dr. Alexa Geminiano". Notice that my client doesn't have the same sitelinks. Some further data: If you do a a search for "calgary aesthetic dentist" you'll see the competitor's 1-box local result (is that what it's called?) with his Google Places data and sitelinks. If you search for "calgary ambiance dentist" you'll get a similar layout SERP for my client, again with no sitelinks. My client's sitelinks: If you search for "ambiance dental calgary" you'll see that Google does offer sitelinks for his site, just not in Google Places it seems. My client's website: My client's website has the navigation coded as a list (UL) without any javascript or complicated code messing things up. The competitor's navigation is built similarly, though he has about 40 more pages in his main navigation. My client's page names are concise, which I've read helps with sitelinks, the website is coded very cleanly, the URLs of his site are clear and concise without a complicated folder structure, so it seems like we're doing everything right. I appreciate any input other mozzers can provide, and discussion on the topic. I'm sure there are others who would benefit from local sitelinks as well!

Seo advice / plan ? penalized ?
I built an ecommerce site for a client of mine just over 9 months ago now. To begin with the serps were great, everything was listed in the results but for some reason a few weeks in all the results vanished from google and now we're lucky to find anything. I've been as far as page 200 and havent found any results. Its been like this for a solid 8 months so i can only presume that the site has been penalised in some form. Searching for unique phrases from the site doesnt even return results. The website in question is = http://goo.gl/A6Gz2

keywords we're aiming for = coloured contact lenses, fashion contact lenses
Target = Google UK Now im not really an seo guy but regardless of this my client has hired me to see whats going on and correct it. I've been scratching my head thinking all sorts of things but none of which im certain about so i'm looking for someone to point me in the right direction before i do anything drastic. So to begin with here are some of my suspicions which i personally think are affecting ranking and possible penalisation. #1 - Too many links on the page
#2 - Possibly over optimised
#3 - Lack of content on the product and category pages
#4 - Lack of backlinks and links in general coming from other sites My main concern is the lack of links from other sites and the odd link coming from low quality sites. I've also just found out that my client has been using an automatic link submitter which i've always thought of as a big no no. Some of the sites these links have been submitted to have nothing to do with the keyword we are targetting and are sort of spammy sites containing all sorts of links. Im wondering if these poor quality links could have caused the site to be penalised, google may be seeing it as a spammy site due to this. Whats your opinions on the above, are my suspicions correct and can this be recovered ? My planned course of action is to be as follows: #1 - Re write the content currently on the site so that it is better written and include more keywords, especially long tails since i think these will help bring the serps up.
#2 - Write detailed category and product descriptions as well as making sure every page has some well written content with links and keywords.
#3 - Keep the above pages to one main subject / keyword so that google doesnt get confused.
#4 - Get some links on popular and relevant sites, the only problem here is the lack of fashion contact lens sites. Does anyone have any advice on how to find these or where i should be getting links placed. Are directories worth while ?
#5 - Get more involved in the social side ie facebook, twitter I will be building on the above over time, aswell as running google ads moderately for our chosen keywords. Is there anything i have missed, anything i shouldnt be doing. Please advise. Thanks.0 -
SEO for Log in Sites
Hello, I just lunched a website where you have to sign up and to log in in order to use it. So I have the home, also a blog but then the rest of the pages are let's say it "hidden".How would you do the seo for it? I have been cheking facebook, foursquare and some others and they use different approaches. Facebook uses the same description in every single page for example. My site is similar to foursquare users have profile, stats, history, ranking. Well, what is your advice?? Thanks a lot

Expiring URL seo
a buddy of mine is running a niche job board and is having issues with expiring URLs. we ruled it out cuz a 301 is meant to be used when the content has moved to another page, or the page was replaced. We were thinking that we'd be just stacking duplicate content on old urls that would never be 'replaced'. Rather they have been removed and will never come back. So 410 is appropriate but maybe we overlooked something. any ideas?
