Blog separate from website?
-
I have 2 domain names - 1 for a blog - the domain name contains key words related to the main subject of the blog. The 2nd is the main website with a domain name = company name - no key words. The blog and main website are about the same subject.
SEOMoz link analysis indicates that the main website is getting domain authority credit from the large number of links from the blog to the main website.
The blog website gets more traffic than the main website and Google Analytics data indicates that we are getting a low number of referrals from the blog to the main website.
If I can increase the referral traffic from the blog site to the main website do you think the link credit from the blog to the main website warrants keeping the sites separate or do people think the blog and the main website should be under the same domain name?
Please share your thoughts - I need advice!

If your trying to market the blog as a part of the company, i'd personally just move everything over to a subdirectory. In my case before, we physically can't move the content over to a blog because of a bunch of complications.

Thanks Zach,
Thanks for the response. I would not have set these sites up like this - but I inherited this situation. I am trying to weigh the disruption of going to a single domain vs keeping the sites as is and just trying to get more traffic from the blog site to click over and visit the main website. I have researched this and most everyone seems to agree that if you are setting this up that you should have the blog and the main site under the same domain name. But every post has at least one person arguing that the linking between domains makes it worth it to have two domain names. So I am trying to understand if the linking benefit is true and if I should stay the course or bite the bullet and make the change. Also if any one has pointers on the signs to look for to indicate that I should go to one domain name that would be most helpful.

it gets really tricky interlinking two domains, even if it's just a blog on a different domain. I'm not saying that it can't or shouldn't be done, but Google, can view it as a method of artificially attempting to boost Page Rank.
I'm not an expert on this, but most large sites that I see keep their corporate blogs on the same domain, for example SEOmoz they have their blog, and the UGC blog as well (YouMoz).
By keeping both sites (corporate and blog) on the same domain, the domain as a whole will increase their Domain Authority, which will help both parts of the site (theoretically) increase in rankings.
Be aware if you move the blog to the corporate domain, you'd need to implement a 301 redirect all the urls to their new url on the corporate site, and, you would lose 1-10% of inherent link value,
It really depends, however on the individual domain because all situations are different. I have an acquaintance who has a main site getting about 200k visits a month, with a blog on a wordpress.com-type site that is getting about 250k views a month, and it is best to keep the blog on it's existing domains because it's not worth it to lose the link juice.
Hope this helps

My website has been declining in rankings!
Hello everyone, I have been doing the SEO on the following site: www.painters-decorators-london.co.uk for the past few years and the rankings are slowly declining since last year. (not the recent Google update). I can't seem to figure out what exactly is causing this to happen The page authority and domain authority is higher than my competitors. The on page SEO I believe is done appropriately but I'm not sure whats causing this decline. How can I find out exactly using the MOZ Pro account that I have. I don't think I'm totally aware of the important metrics that one can use on this site to determine the problem. Please advise!

Looking for a good GA plugin for Wordpress blog
We're looking to install a plugin for our Wordpress blog, to be able to receive analytical data right in our wordpress dashboard. Can anyone suggest a good one that is working well for them? We are looking for one that is either free, or fairly inexpensive. Google Analytics Dashboard for WordPress appears to be a front-runner for us, has anyone had any experience with this plugin? Thanks so much! Amiee

Best way to generate analytics reports for listing style website
I'm working on a website that includes dedicated pages for ~40 local businesses, and I need to be able to generate and export some basic reports I can send to each business. The data I need for each report is split between general sitewide data: total number of visitors to the site for month. number of visitors to each main category page what country they are from (main countries) - top 5 traffic source / keywords avg time on site As well as specific data for each individual page: how many people viewed specific total pages Time spent on individual page. Would this be possible with custom reports in analytics? I can see the number of different reports being difficult to maintain, especially as site grows. Anyone had expereince on a similar site of ideas on the best way to do this? Thanks

Website optimizer troubles
First, we would love to use the new Google Experiements intergrated into analytics but its not rolled out to us. We tried to get it expideted roll out to us but no luck... So we are stuck with a soon to be discontinued Website optimzer. I can't get past the first step however, I get the follow error: "The original page and the conversion page URLs must share the same domain.", see attached. The convertoin page is on a subdomain. There is quite a bit of help online about this. You need to tweak the script code. There is nothing about how to get past this page though. It simply says its a on a different domain (which its not) and won't let me go any further... Thanks! Website%20Optimizer.jpg

Dramatic Increase in referrals from own website
The past few weeks I've been wracking my brain to figure out why on earth my branded searches could be dropping off at 30-40%. Well today, I realize I've had a dramatic increase in referrals from my own site (the non www verison). I'm talking 150 in March of last year to 5k in March of this year drastic. My 301 redirects haven't changed as far as I know -- I've had them set to redirect from the non www. to the www. for at least a year or two. I'm assuming visitors from search engines are somehow getting the non www version and the redirect is attributing the traffic to referrals instead of search. The drop in search traffic and the increase in referral traffic fall on the same day. Does that sound right/possible? If so, how do I fix this? My traffic stats for two clients are all screwy because of this. I want to make sure whatever solution I implement won't hurt my search traffic numbers any more 🙂 Has anyone else seen this happen recently? I could imagine an anomaly with one site but I find it odd that it could be two client sites. I still have some others to check. Thanks in advance! Leslie

I made 18 websites and the traffic keeps going down over 3 months
I made 18 websites, and have used a analytics web app called piwik. You can google it, but basically it is like google analytics. I have done nothing for the websites no links, no updates. I did do the onpage optimization extremely well. At first I had daily traffic over all the websites at about 200, then like a month went by and it was at 100, then another month has gone by it is hovering around 30 visits -- This is total traffic across all the websites. In addition my websites were ranking much better and alot of them were coming up together in the results in a single google query, now this is no longer true, only one or maybe two come for the same google query and they come up lower in the serp ranking ie. before it was 1st place now 3rd for example, so traffic has decreased respectively. Anybody can tell me what I can do, to regain the positions and traffic I had before.
