Wordpress Blog Blocked by Metarobots
-
Upon receiving my first crawl report from new pro SEOMoz acc (yaay!) I've found that the wordpress blog plugged into my site hasn't been getting crawled due to being blocked by metarobots.
I'm not a developer and have very little tech expertise, but a search dug up that the issue stemmed from the wordpress site settings > privacy > Ask search engines not to index this site option being selected.
On checking the blog "Allow search engines to index this site" was selected so I'm unsure what else to check. My level of expertise means I'm not confident going into the back end of the site and I don't have a tech guy on site to speak to.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it common and will I need to consult a developer to get this fixed?
Many thanks in advance for your help!

I didn't think there were any issues with the blog being crawled. I'm not seeing any errors in webmaster tools, and I'm def not doing anything tricky on the server side.
I don't even go near that stuff for fear of breaking summat.
Really appreciate your help Barry.
All the best,7
Pete

There shouldn't be a robots.txt file on the /blog section anyway, should always be in the root. It was just something to have a look at.
I'm having a look just now and also don't see any problems.
You've nothing in the robots.txt file and nothing in meta-robots for the header.
There's 42 pages in the site: command and a similar number in your sitemap.xml so I presume that's right. 6 pages in site:/blog which again looks right.
I've tried using SEOmoz's tools on your site though and it just tells me that your site doesn't resolve. edit Managed to get it to resolve on the 3rd try for a crawl, but using the on page report card checker it's still giving me problems.
You're definitely returning a 200 message with a site when I check using any other tool though, so I'd get in touch with SEOmoz directly and see what's wrong with their tool - help@seomoz.org
Just to confirm you're not doing anything tricky server side to prevent scraping are you?

Hi Barry,
Thanks for the reply, I'm checking out your recommendations now..
I checked http://debtmadesimple.co.uk/robots.txt and there is no Disallow for the blog.
I tried http://debtmadesimple.co/uk/wp-install/robots.txt I can't access the file you speak of.
I will try and download the plugin you mentioned, it would be good to get access to the robot file nonetheless.
Thanks again!
Pete

Hi Zach,
First I'd like to thank you for the speedy reply, I really appreciate your help.
The URL of the blog is http://www.debtmadesimple.co.uk/blog/.
Thanks again!

If you're not taking Zach up on his offer, have a look at http://yoursite.com/robots.txt and see if it has
User-agent: *
Disallow: (your blog url in here)If it does you'll need to edit your robots.txt file to not have anything you don't want disallowed in the disallow section. You can do this via ftp.
If it's in WP itself there may be another robots.txt file at http://yoursite.com/wp-install/robots.txt which, in theory, could also be preventing crawling if it has anything disallowed in there.
Again, editable via ftp or maybe this plugin - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-robots-txt/
As it already says that it should be public probably not WP, but worth a look anyway.

I'm a WP developer and an SEO, i'd be more than willing to do some troubleshooting here on the forums for you. If the settings>privacy is checked to allow search engines to crawl, then I doubt it's a WordPress issue in itself, though a plugin could do this.
What is the URL of your site? You may have a robots.txt that is blocking search engine crawlers, i've also seen a thing where all URLs on the site are noinexed and nofollowed.
Let me know and i'll take a quick look for you.
Zach

Blogs Not Getting Indexed Intermittently - Why?
Over the past 5 months many of our clients are having indexing issues for their blog posts.
Technical SEO | | JohnBracamontes
A blog from 5 months ago could be indexed, and a blog from 1 month ago could be indexed but blogs from 4, 3 and 2 months ago aren't indexed. It isn't consistent and there is not commonality across all of these clients that would point to why this is happening. We've checked sitemap, robots, canonical issues, internal linking, combed through Search Console, run Moz reports, run SEM Rush reports (sorry Moz), but can't find anything. We are now manually submitting URLs to be indexed to try and ensure they get into the index. Search console reports for many of the URLs will show that the blog has been fetched and crawled, but not indexed (with no errors). In some cases we find that the blog paginated pages (i.e. blog/page/2 , blog/page/3 , etc.) are getting indexed but not the blogs themselves. There aren't any nofollow tags on the links going to the blogs either. Any ideas? *I've added a screenshot of one of the URL inspection reports from Search Console alt text0 -

How to force Wordpress to remove trailing slashes?
I've searched around quite a bit for a solution here, but I can't find anything. I apologize if this is too technical for the forum. I have a Wordpress site hosted on Nginx by WP Engine. Currently it resolves requests to URLs either with or without a trailing slash. So, both of these URLs are functional: <code>mysite.com/single-post</code> and <code>mysite.com/single-post/</code> I would like to remove the trailing slash from all posts, forcing mysite.com/single-post/ to redirect to mysite.com/single-post. I created a redirect rule on the server: ^/(.*)/$ -> /$1 and this worked well for end-users, but rendered the admin panel inaccessible. Somewhere, Wordpress is adding a trailing slash back on to the URL mysite.com/wp-admin, resulting in a redirect loop. I can't see anything obvious in .htaccess. Where is this rule adding a trailing slash to 'wp-admin' established? Thanks very much

Link in my blog to external pages - no follow?
Hi everyone. I'm quite new to SEO (started 6 months ago, but I'm very lucky to work the company that is willing to pay while I'm learning). I also create some content for the website - I write wood flooring industry blog. Following some advise from few SEO experts around the world whom I follow I have decided to write 1-2 off topic blogs/month but I have found the way of writing off topic but in reality bringing together wood flooring industry and let's say fashion industry. My question is - if I want to link to one or two pages (let's say bug fashion brands) shall I use no-follow link? I do not want to harm my website or theirs. Can those type of posts be the part of building my position within my industry and in general, building authority of my website? Of course appart from getting links TO my website. Tom

Why is my blog disappearing from Google index?
My Google blogger blog is about 10 months old. In that time i have worked really hard with adding unique content, building relationships with other bloggers in the same niche, and done some inbound marketing. 2 weeks ago I updated the template to something cleaner, with a little more "wordpress" feel to it. This means i've messed about with the code a lot in these weeks, adding social buttons etc. The problem is that from some point late last week thurs/fri my pages started disappearing from Googles index. I have checked webmaster tools and have no manual actions. My link profile is pretty clean as its a new site, and i have manually checked every piece of content published for plagiarism etc. So what is going on? Did i break my blog? Or is something else amiss? Impressions are down 96% comparing Nov 1-5th to previous 5 days. site is here: http://bit.ly/174beVm Thanks for any help in advance.

Wordpress 4xx errors from comment re-direct
About a month ago, we had a massive jump in 4XX errors. It seems the majority are being caused by the comment tool on wordpress, which is generating a link that looks like this "http://www.turnerpr.com/blog/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.turnerpr.com%2Fblog%2F2013%2F09%2Fturners-crew-royal-treatment-well-sort-of%2Fphoto-2-2%2F" On every single post. We're using Akismet and haven't had issues in the past....and I can't figure out the fix. I've tried turning it off and back on; I'm reluctant to completely switch commenting systems because we'd lose so much history. Anyone seen this particular re-direct love happen before? Angela

How do you incorporate a Wordpress blog onto an ecommerce website?
Hello there, We have a company website: http://www.parklanechampagne.co.uk/ and a Wordpress blog: http://www.alastairharrison.me/ and I would like the blog on the subfolder http://www.parklanechampagne.co.uk/blog so that we get maximum SEO benefit from updating this regularly (I understand this would be better than putting it on a subdomain blog.parklanechampagne.co.uk?). The Wordpress blog is hosted externally but I was after some advice on how we can move this blog to the parklanechampagne/blog subfolder? Any help gratefully received - I've asked several SEO and web agencies this question and had a lot of contrasting replies! Many thanks, Jon
