Best practices for switching site languages around
-
Hi folks. The site in question is at http://bit.ly/UDV186
It is split into English and Spanish versions, each at root/en and root/es respectively. The home page is in Spanish.
We're trying to rank the site for English keywords so we want to switch the homepage to English and put the Spanish version as secondary.
What are the best practices for this? Can we just literally swap the two versions around onto the existing URLs, i.e. take the English text and put it onto the home page? Provided all links point to the correct page, would that be fine?
Are there any other best practice considerations to take?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks John!

I think switching the two versions should be fine.
You can set up rel alternate hreflang tags if the content on your site is duplicate between English and Spanish. This will help the search engines understand that these are alternate pages based on the language, and help Spanish searches get the Spanish version of pages, and English searches get the English versions. Google talks about that here. You can do it on the page, or in your sitemap.
You can use the meta language tags or set the language in your HTTP headers for Bing to understand what's going on (see here).

Greek language distinctiveness
Hello, i am facing the below problem and want your help. I will give an example for you to understand. The problem with the Greek language is that in or words we have tones above a letter in the most words. I will present now which the problem is. When you want to write dissertation the right way is "πτυχιακές εργασίες" and this is the most important service we offer the problem is that people are searching using the same keyword but without the tones like : "πτυχιακες εργασιες" . If you see monthly searches in keyword planner the difference in volume is huge. Also in rankings for the first one i am on place 2 but for the second one i am on place 3. The problem is that i cannot have the grammatically wrong phrase in my page title and also in my content so what should i do? The same problem is almost on all keywords where people are searching without a tone or searching the same phrase using English characters like "ptyxiakes ergasies". I have fully analyzed the problem. Please give a hand thanks in advance

Site Blacklisted
Good morning. Just done my WMT ritual morning check and one of my sites has been blacklisted for malware. It's a wordpress site - I've run various scans, e.g. http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/ and also installed wordfence and scanned with that and wordfence produced some offending files which I have now deleted. I've also installed website defender in the hope that it wont happen again. I'm pretty good with staying on top of updates and rarely let a few days pass without upgrading new version of wordpress or plugins etc. I've also checked my users to make sure no new admins or anything and also changes passwords. I've asked for a review from Google and just wondered how long these reviews take? Also, has anybody got any advice, is there anything else I should be doing? Thanks

How can you get the right site links for your site?
Hello all, I have been trying to get Google to list relevant site links for my site when you type in our brand name, Loco2 or for when Loco2 comes up in a search result. Different things come up when you search Loco2 and Loco 2. We would like site links to look like how they do when you search Loco 2. However Loco2 is our brand name, NOT Loco 2. Does anyone know why Google is doing this and whether we can influence results? We have done as much as possible via Google webmaster, in terms of specifying the links we DO NOT want Google to list for Loco2. However, when you search "Loco2", results only show simple site links. Ideally what we want is: Loco2 to be recognised as the brand NOT Loco 2 The same results (substantial, identical) for Loco2 as for Loco 2 (think o2 and o 2) For the site links to reflect the main pages of our site (Times & Tickets, Engine Room forum etc.) Many thanks in advance! Anila

Site not indexing correctly
I am trying to figure out what is going on with my site listings. Google is only displaying my title and url - no description. You can see it when you search for Franchises for Sale. The site is www.franchisesolutions.com. Why could this happen? Also I saw a big drop off in a handful of keyword rankings today. Could this be related?

Time on site
From what I understand, if you search for a keyword say "blue widgets" and you click on a result, and then spend 10 seconds there, and go back to google and click on a different result google will track that first result as being not very relevant. What I don't understand is what happens when (and this happens all the time, i did it today) you click on a result go to that page, find it (not?) relevant and then get distracted, phone call, or someone calls you into another room in the office. You end up accidentally leaving the tab open all day long, and never go back to the google search. So your time on site to google is what? infinity? there must be an upper cap here? at some point they must say, ok, the user is gone, time on site = our maximum = 5 minutes?!? Get me? any insight?
