Questions about Redirects
-
Hi,
I am trying to make sure that I can determine if a site has a 301 redirect set up to redirect the site from domain.com to www.domain.com and am hoping that you can confirm the following for me, or let me know if I am off track:
- is http://www.internetofficer.com/seo-tool/redirect-check/ a reliable way to check if a 301 redirect is set up?
- is Screaming Frog SEO Spider a good tool to use to see if a redirect is in place?
- if I search for site:www.domain.com and site:domain.com, I should only get results for the site being indexed, not for the site that has the 301 redirect set up, right? For example, if www.domain.com is set up to redirect to domain.com, then I should get no search results for site:www.domain.com and only show indexed pages for domain.com. If I search for site:www.domain.com and site:domain.com and get results for both, then does this mean that the redirect is not set up?
- if a redirect is set up from www.domain.com to domain.com, should the crawl report should only show one page crawled on www.domain.com?
- if a crawl report shows same number of pages for www.domain.com as for domain.com, does that mean that redirect is not set up properly?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Carolina
Below are my thoughts on your question :
- Yes, internetofficer.com is the best tool to check the redirects. I also use the same.
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider tool is very famous & authenticate. This software gives you the detailed information of the website links. Yes you can definitely use this tool to see the redirects, errors, external links, URI Issues, file size, and much more.. This is a very useful tool for SEO's.
- Yes you will not get the result for 301 redirect set up link but after sometime of the redirection done. If you search for site:www.domain.com and site:domain.com then you might get the same results but only for the indexed pages. As per my knowledge google will only show the indexed pages in "site:" query. Also in your example the results will be shown the same on both the query i guess because you redirected the whole domain from www.domain.com to domain.com but yes it will only show the indexed pages in the results. Normally all SEO's do redirection from domain.com to www.domain.com.
Last both answers are perfect from the SEO5.
If you have any more que on any topic then i would like to help you.

- the tool seems to work , did some tests and it is returning accurate responses
- Not used screaming frog, previewed the demo, it looks like good tool and the features mention the redirect check
- this might take a bit of time but eventually yes, the url that was 301 redirected should not appear in the search results
- wait for a while before you run crawl reports as it might take some time for Google to register the 301 that you have setup.

Redirect Chain Issue
I just found I'm having a redirect chain issue for http://ifixappliancesla.com (301 Moved Permanently). According to Moz, "Your page is redirecting to a page that is redirecting to a page that is redirecting to a page... and so on" These are the pages involved: 301 Moved Permanently

http://ifixappliancesla.com
https://ifixappliancesla.com https://www.ifixappliancesla.com/ This is what Yoast support told me: "The redirect adds the https and then the www, ending at: https://www.ifixappliancesla.com/. You want all variants of your site's domain to end up at: https://www.ifixappliancesla.com/ " - which is totally true. But I would also like not to have the redirect chain issue! Could you please give me an advise on how to properly redirect my pages so I don't have that issue anymore?0 -
Redirect Chain Domain
MozPro is highlighting some redirect chain issues with our domain that I do not recall ever setting up in our redirect list. In our Moz Pro Campaign I see the Site Crawl has flagged 36 Redirect Chain Issues. I understand how the redirect chain errors can happen but I do not recall ever manually redirecting our domain, yet I have http://stickylife.com, https://stickylife.com & https://www.stickylife.com all associated in one of our redirect chain errors. When looking at our redirect files I do not see any of these domain redirects and wonder how this has happened and how to fix it. It appears as though our HTTP and HTTPS is causing some redirection. I wonder if this is coming from our DNS settings?

Redirecting Canonical Hostnames
Hi, I want to rewrite all the url pages of "site.com" to "www.site.com". I read the moz redirection article and i concluded that this would be the best approach. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.seomoz.org [NC]
Technical SEO | | bigrat95
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.seomoz.org/$1 [L,R=301]. But i recieved this error: Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@localhost and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. I tried this rewrite too... RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [L,R=301] It worked but it just rewriting my domain** "site.com"** and not all the subs "site.com/fr/example.php" to "www.site.com" Why it doesn't work properly, it seem to be easy... Could it be a hosting problem? Is there another way to do it? <address> </address> <address> </address> <address> </address> <address> </address>0 -
Slug redirect
Hi All, I'm facing a small yet big problem on one of my sites that I'll try to explain: I have a site with thousands of URL's, all with an odd link structure, like index.php/modules?=name=Video , etc I want to build a proper link structure and for that I'll have to replace that links. My question is: 1. Will I have any relevant SEO problem to do 301 redirects from the old links to the new?

2. Should I do it all at the same time or do it by parts?
3. What options do I have to avoid give not found errors / redirects for the old links? Thanks for the help.0 -
Redirecting a questionable domain to a trusted domain
I have a question!
Technical SEO | | FDFPres
We have 2 domains operating within the same retail sector. One of them is for our bricks and mortar business and the other is a new brand we launched as a nationwide e-retailer. We aggressively built links for the new one and achieved some very good search positioning, where we remained for about 4 months until the google updates of the first half of this year started biting. The domain never received a warning from google or anything, but the links have clearly been devalued to a point where the domain is now virtually buried for the most competitive terms. However, the domain does still get around 100-200 visitors per day, and has a DA of 38. We're thinking about a reshuffle that would involve putting the products in to our brick and mortar business website, and redirecting the brand domain to the bricks and mortar domain. Thank you for reading this far! the question is then, is there a danger of the bricks and mortar domain being tarnished by this? as i said the brand domain hasn't had any notices of penalty from google but it has definitely been hit by updates.0 -
301 Redirect Domain or 301 Redirect Domain + Interior Pages
Hello - My company acquired another company in our industry and our IT team immediately set up the acquired companies domain name as a an alias to our site. This created a duplicate version of our website under another domain name and Google started ranking interior pages from the aliased acquired site for several top keywords that were previously held by our real site. Should we 301 redirect just the top level domain name of the acquired site to the real site or 301 redirect the top level domain name and the interior pages on the acquired site to help ensure that our real domain will take back the rankings it once had? Thanks!

A technical 301 Redirect Question
Alright, I'm taking a chance and stepping into the developer role here...something completely out of my comfort zone so bear with me. We have a pretty site built in PHP (www.dassant.com) and we are coming across some duplicate content issues. For example, these are supposed to be the same page: http://www.dassant.com/products.php and http://www.dassant.com/products So the SEO in me states the obvious: We need a 301 redirect stat! Unfortunately, our developer went MIA and I am having the hardest time getting a 301 implemented. After some research I found the code that I need to paste into the PHP (for this specific page): Header( "HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" );
Technical SEO | | EssEEmily
Header( "Location: http://www.dassant.com/products" );
?> However, when I paste it in, upload and refresh the page, I get these error messages in the (multiple) browsers I use. (See attached) http://imgur.com/a/1lar5 With my limited knowledge I can't find these supposed other redirects so I'm stumped. Can anyone shed some light? Thank you in advance! 1lar50
