Competitor analysis and broken links
-
I have just been looking at a competitors links and have discovered some of the links they have obtained dont actually exist when clicking through to the directory or blog in question, although still appear in opensiteexplorer.
Is this common? and is it just a sign of bad link building practices?

Well open site explorer is your friend! The best way to get a feel for evaluating link profiles is just to dive in and look at the link profiles of lots of sites - sites that rank, sites that don't and sites that should! Remember to take a good look at the sites themselves to get a feel for their layout, relevance and and high level feel for their authority. (humans are pretty good at evaluating this!)
There are tools out there that will help you profile backlinks (such as Link Detective (http://www.linkdetective.com/) (which seems to be down at the moment)
Here's an articles from the SEOmoz blog to get you started::
How to Check Which Links Can Harm Your Site's Rankings
I don't know if you've got the SEO Toolbar installed (http://www.seomoz.org/seo-toolbar), it's a great way to keep an eye on sites as you surt and an easy way to jump into digging into a sites ranking factors.
More than anything else, I would say that the most important thing is to develop an inquisitive nature!
Good luck!

Thanks Doug
I guess I need to do some more homework on evaluating links. Whats the best way of going about this?

Open site explorer is a snapshot of the web as seen at a particular moment in time.
You can't count on any links being permanent. The URL of the linking page can change over time (especially true where you have paginated comments and your/your competitors comments drift down over time.)
I don't think you can automatically assume that disappearing links are a sign of bad link building practices, but I suspect it's a reasonable warning sign to dig a little deeper.
If these links are all blogs / directory links then I'd say that can be a good indicator of low value/risky link building.
You need to look at the nature of the links, their authority and value. Do they exist solely to provide a link or is there another reason. Is the site on which the link existed related to the target site and is it reasonable to believe that a link would belong there. Is there a reason why you'd want to remove them if they were your links.
Especially when you've got a competitive niche, it makes sense to keep an eye on your competitors ranking and then look at reasons behind any changes. I've heard of anecdotal stories of site moving from page 2 to the top of page 1 just by tidying up their link profiles.

That particular competitor might have made the link a while back before the recent Google updates and after the update they might have implemented link removal campaigns removing the links that might harm the site's ranking. OS explorer's data is refreshed once a month, and in some cases more than that. So If you click on those link, they might have been removed already by your competitor.
Hope that helps !

Sitewide links
Hi there, We operate about a dozen websites that are part of the same parent company. All these websites are in the same vertical, and link among each other in the footer section. The anchor for each link is the brand name, so we are merely doing it to show what other products the parent company has to offer. My question is: do you think this is still advisable, or it might trigger a penalty? Also, what would you choose between: Sitewide footer links from each site to the other sites. A single footer link on the homepage from each site to the other sites. A presentation page on each website, one click away from the homepage, which presents the company's other websites. Thanks.

Manual Links Vs. Smart Links
Hey Everybody, Is there any downside to the smart link plugins that I see all over wordpress? Basically in short I enter a keyword and where I want that link to go (primarily internal) and set the parameters of repetition etc and it automatically adds the link to that. Now other than the obvious situation where it might put a link in an awkward place, is there anything wrong with this sort of software? Part of me things that this sort of software would not be liked by Google, and that it isn't really getting counted as a true link, but i wanted to see if there were other thoughts or experience with this.

If i get link pointing to a specific page , will that link add up to the count of linking root domains too ?
If I create a fresh link pointing to specific page on my site, apart from adding a number to "page linking root domains" does it also add up to root domain linking ?

Link building
Hello everyone, I am building links for an e-commerce site and I need to increase the value of the links we get by placing them on specific pages in order to pass more juice to inner pages. Which part of the website should I point the links to? Because there is no content section on the site what I can do is either link to the homepage (not an option) or link to inner pages such as category/subcategory/product pages. My doubt is that it wouldn't look natural to link to products pages from a piece of content or from a site where people go with the intention not to buy but to get information. Any opinions on this?

Diversified Link Profile?
Hello,, I was wondering what type of ratio I should follow when building links to a page on my site? Broad, Exact, Phrase, Image? Is there a percentage I should shoot for? When you build links do you generally setup an excel spread sheet and watch to see what sticks using the seomoz link too? Last question, When I am building links, should the anchor text in the content Im publishing be a keyword I am trying to rank for in a search? Typically I try to rank for only 2-3 words per page. Sorry for all the questions, any help would be appreciated! I have a competitor that is spamming to death with Press Releases quite often, and the are bouncing ahead of us with Very Low Page Authority. Thank You!!

A few questions about link building?
1. Is it worth gaining more then 1 link on a website when link building, for example if I did a guest post on a blog, is it worth doing another guest post on the same blog linking to the same website? So 2 guest posts on 2 blogs, or 4 guest posts on 4 blogs? 2. When building links through guest blogging, you have two options, a link in the byline and a link in the content. Will a link in the content have more benefit then in the byline as its surrounded by relevant content? 3. Does having a link higher up the page have more benefit then one lower down?
