How best to deal with www.home.com and www.home.com/index.html
-
Firstly, this is for an .asp site - and all my usual ways of fixing this (e.g. via htaccess) don't seem to work.
I'm working on a site which has www.home.com and www.home.com/index.html - both URL's resolve to the same page/content.
If I simply drop a rel canonical into the page, will this solve my dupe content woes?
The canonical tag would then appear in both www.home.com and www.home.com/index.html cases.
If the above is Ok, which version should I be going with?

Would be the preferred method, if not available then use the Canonical option.
Here is a great SEOMoz blog post
Here is a quote pertaining to your issue:
"Multiple Versions of the Homepage
This is another common mistake. Potentially a homepage URL could be access through the following means, depending on how it has been built -
http://seomoz.org
http://www.seomoz.org/home.html
http://www.seomoz.org/index.htmlIf the homepage can be accessed via these type of URLs, they should 301 to the correct URL which in this case would be www.seomoz.org.
Quick caveat - the only exception would be if these multiple versions of the homepage served a unique purpose, such as being shown to users who are logged in or have cookies dropped. In this case, you'd be better to use rel=canonical instead of a 301."
Hope it helps.

Many thanks Istvan - I'll give that a try.

Hi James,
If you will have the on both of the pages it should do the trick.
Or another possible solution would be to create a 301 redirect for www.home.com/index.html -> www.home.com/
Beware if you use both redirect and canonical have the same link there.
I have seen infinite loops created with canonical and 301 created for search engines. Canonical was pointing to the "/" version and the redirect was with the non - "/".
I hope this helps.
greetings,
Istvan

Example.com for english and example.es for spain. Will .com still rank for english querys?
Hello,Due to various technical questions we have decided to implement our multi-language support in a way that example.com servers the English search query's and example.es Spanish. Now there is big volume for English query's in Spain serp. If i have example.es domain for Spain and use language tags will searchers find my .com still for their English terms or automatically only .es will be served for google.es?We would just specify hreflang=EN for the example.com and es for the example.esThank you,

Indexing Issue
Hi, We have moved one of our domain https://www.mycity4kids.com/ in angular js and after that, i observed the major drop in the number of indexed pages. I crosschecked the coding and other important parameters but didn't find any major issue. What could be the reason behind the drop?

SSL, www issue. Should we buy WWW license or just add redirect from www to non-www site?
Hi, We've installed SSL certificate (Symantec Safe Site).
Technical SEO | | Ryan_V
Now our site shows with https, but when someone types www before site name it leads to http and shows strikethrough https unsafe icon in the browser. As it appears, our SSL was purchased without www domain name license. Should we buy www license or just add redirect from www to without www site? If so how to set up this redirect properly. Thanks.0 -
Homepage indexation issue
Hello all, I've been scratching my head about this one for a while now... Let me explain the situation. I'm working on a multi-lingual website. Visitors are redirected (301) when they visit the homepage to the correct domain.com/en/default.html, domain.com/nl/default.html, domain.com/fr/default.html or domain.com/de/default.html based on browser language. I have doubts about the impact on the ability for Google to index the website because of that, but that's a problem for another day. The problem I'm having right now, is that domain.com/nl/default.html, domain.com/de/default.html and domain.com/fr/default.html are all indexed. When I search for the URL in Google I get the correct page on number one so I'm pretty sure those are indexed correctly. When I search for domain/en/default.html though, the homepage appears without /en/default.html extension. Does this mean Google assumes the domain.com page is the same as domain.com/en/default.html even though the redirect that's in place? Would be great if someone could shed some light on this. Thanks in advance!

Canonical tag for Home page: with or without / at the end???
Setting up canonical tags for an old site. I really need advice on that darn backslash / at the end of the homepage URL. We have incoming links to the homepage as http://www.mysite.com (without the backslash), and as http://www.mysite.com/ (with the backslash), and as http://www.mysite.com/index.html I know that there should be 301 redirects to just one version, but I need to know more about the canonical tags... Which should the canonical tag be??? (without the backslash) or (with the backslash) Thanks for your help! 🙂

Redirecting the .com of our site
Hey guys, A company I consult for has a different site for its users depending on the geography. Example: When a visitor goes to www.company.com if the user is from the EU, it gets redirected to http://eu.company.com If the user is from the US, it goes to http://us.company.com And so on. I have two questions: Does having a redirect on the .com will influence rankings on each specific sub-site? I suspect it will affect the .com since it will simply not get indexed but not sure if affects the sub domains. The content on this sub-sites are not different (I´m still trying to figure out why they are using the sub-domains). Will they get penalized for duplicate content? Thanks!

.com or .net what is the answer
Ok. My site has been running as whitetail-mafia.com for about 3 years now. I recently switched to a new host (had to say good bye to godaddy). In the change I switched the site to whitetail-mafia.net I have whitetail-mafia.com, whitetailmafia.com, and whitetailmafia.net set for a 301 redirect to whitetail-mafia.net. I have recently transferred all of these to the same host now. However, during my first run at OpenExplorer I found that the old site whitetail-mafia.com was carrying some good weight. Did I shoot myself in the foot? Should I transfer everything back to .com and redirect to it since it has some history? Will my rankings for .com transfer over to the .net with the 301 redirect? looking for the best advice here before I spend too much time having to rebuild...

Dealing with indexable Ajax
Hello there, My site is basically an Ajax application. We assume lots of people link into deep pages on the site, but bots won't be able to read past the hashmarks, meaning all links appear to go to our home page. So, we have decided to form our Ajax for indexing. And so many questions remain. First, only Google handles indexable Ajax, so we need to keep our static "SEO" pages up for Bing and Yahoo. Bummer, dude, more to manage. 1. How do others deal with the differences here? 2. If we have indexable Ajax and static pages, can these be perceived as duplicate content? Maybe the answer is to disallow google bot from indexing the static pages we made. 3. What does your canonical URL become? Can you tell different search engines to read different canonical URLs? So many more questions, but I'll stop there. Curious if anyone here has thoughts (or experience) on the matter. Erin
