Will links to www and none www result in penalty?
-
Hello all,
Normally i redirect my www to none www to avoid the potential of duplicate content and as its typically something that is done in SEO.
I don't have access to the site of the company I am working for at the moment as everything related to the sites code goes through the web developer.
At the moment the site lives at www and none www and one does not redirect to the other. I have been building links (organically as we engage on a few forums and blogs) to the www as that is how it is linked internally already and how links from the job boards we post on link.
We do however have some natural none www links and my concern is that since the site isn't redirected that it is being penalised or could become penalised because of this.
I imagine that it isn't a serious penalty if one at all but I would rather know so I can try and get it sorted as fast as possible.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. The WWW has the most links and the http has very few. I was mainly worried about the vulnerability of this structure and the risk the website faces from negative seo.
It should be sorted in the coming weeks but for now I'm stuck with it on both.
Thanks

i am glad it helped :}

Hi Luke,
You are not going to face penalty from search engine for these issue. I have the same issue with my client but I have Google webmaster access of each site. I download all duplicate html then forward to client to aware them of this issue. Most of the client provide me access after checking too many duplication errors. But if I don't get access, I check backlink profile of both version and continue my seo effort on version which has more backlink.
Hope this help you out....

Thanks for the reply and the clarification. I know that as mentioned it should use one or the other but your input has helped me with determining my stance on the issue.I'm guessing that there's no solid facts on this in regards to a penalty.

Hello Luke,
I don't believe there would be anytype of penalty for such an issue, but yes you should finalize which domain should you use www or non www and put a 301 redirect on it.
It will prevent duplicated content issue in google and will also flow the incoming link juice to that one domain name instead of the current division of two as i see.
Hope this helps.

301 Redirect for multiple links
I just relaunched my website and changed a permalink structure for several pages where only a subdirectory name changed. What 301 Redirect code do I use to redirect the following? I have dozens of these where I need to change just the directory name from "urban-living" to "urban", and want it to catch the following all in one redirect command. Here is an example of the structure that needs to change. Old

Reciprocal links and nofollow tag
What happens if I link to a site using the nofollow tag and they are linking back to me with a dofollow link? Will it give me as much power and link juice as if it was a one way link (to me) or will Google discount the link because it's reciprocal?

Hit by a penalty? But which one?
Hi guys, First off, thanks for reading my post! My site, www.doctorloanusa.com suffered a massive drop in Google rankings and traffic on September 27. For the past 4 years, I've ranked in spots 1-3. My main keywords are physician loans and doctor loans. I had a competitor copy almost ALL my text. In early October, I filed a DMCA takedown and had the infringing site removed from the SERPS. I also made text changes to my site. I thought this duplicate content was the problem, but I have yet to see any improvements 2 months later. My site isn't particularly deep content-wise, but it's competitive with others in my niche. I have relatively few links but others in the SERPS have very similar link profiles. I tried to clean up a few questionable links and used the disavow tool. I have used the SEOmoz on-page tools to grade my site. Typically, I receive grade A reports. I still rank for my website URL, and still rank 1 in both Yahoo and Bing. My bounce rate is 43%. If anyone could provide insight, I would be very grateful. I need to get this site ranking again, as this property is my main source of income. Is the site over-optimized? Is it my anchor text profile? Thank you very much in advance!

One Keyword Penalty
Hi There, Quick question for everyone. Is it possible to get penalized a keyword level not page level. I have a site that only seems to be penalized on one keyword which is currently at page 22, whilst the rest are on page 1 or page 2. I came to the site late so I have no idea when the site lost its ranking for this keyword after a site redesign but the onpage is almost the same. Kind Regards Neil

For SERPS which is better www or non www
Does it matter if i use to www or no www for SERPS on google? Obviously the redirection would be set up for either in the htaccess file.
