Should you write first - optimize later?
-
We are redesigning the website for our blog and podcast for an upcoming press release. In rewriting to improve some of our blog posts, podcast descriptions, copywriting and overall presentation, would you recommend writing for the reader _first - _then optimizing through SEOMoz? Or should you write with SEO in mind first? I'm a rookie to SEO and would appreciate any recommendations or strategies you may have. Thank you!

Thank you for the reply, Dawn. I appreciate the feedback!

I'd definitely recommend writing for the humans with quality, focused content, but then optimizing the page so that it ticks the boxes from an SEO perspective. Nothing is worse than a page which is obviously written for SEO. Likewise, it's also no good if the page never gets seen as it doesn't rank.
A few tweaks here and there with written content to optimize subtly should do the trick.

Great analogy, Stephen - a perfect marriage of form and content. I really appreciate the feedback. Have a great night and an even better 2013!

I agree with Will. However, imagine that writing content is like building a really awesome skyscraper: you obviously are doing it for "the people" but you have to remember that the "building code inspector" (Google) will come along and make sure everything is in order.
Short story -- you should design for people and code for Google.
Just because the content is killer doesn't mean that it'll explode. However, if you write killer content that is coded for SEs and then distribute it to all your network, once everyone starts spreading it... Google will "endorse" it because they like the markup and you'll see great rankings as a result.

Really appreciate the feedback, Will. All the best and Happy New Year!

I am firmly in the write for humans camp, but I need to caveat that. You need to make sure that your re-design is optimized from a structural standpoint -- it sounds like you have done that, and you are just asking about whether you should write your content for humans or for algorithms. If that is the question, then I think you are much safer if you write for humans and make sure you create compelling, interesting, highly appealing content for your audience, and after that, you can do a keyword review. For almost any website, you are not going to succeed if you write boring content that hits your top keywords. But you will succeed if you write outstanding content that hits your keywords. Hope this is helpful.

Hello, I've heard that the outbound links I provide in my content should have a high degree of relevancy to the topic I'm writing about or they aren't really worth including. Is this true?
Hello, I've heard that relevancy of the content between the source page and the target page of outbound links in my content matters greatly. The outbound links I provide in my content should have a high degree of relevancy to the topic I'm writing about, or they aren't really worth including. Example: Don't just link to the homepage of an organization mentioned in the article, link to a page on their site that is related to the topic you are writing about. Is this true? Would including less relevant links negatively impact SEO in any way?

Best way to optimize a website for local search today?
A real estate agent client has had a website for years, which he optimized to position himself as a national real estate expert (to get more TV and media exposure). Now he wants to be found for a more local real estate term, such as Westchester ny real estate. Should he add a page to his site that's focused on Westchester real estate, or would Google view that as spammy? Should he update older blog posts with relevant, useful content about Westchester? Any best practices and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Optimizing pages for keywords
I have a couple of websites for retailing the western chaps manufactured by my company. I have recently tried to increase my learning for SEO since one of my main sites (started in 2006) just lost about 45% of it's organic search volume since the end of May. It seems my search to learn just creates more and more questions. I have been using google adwords for several years now and have used that information to find the most searched keywords. There are some general keywords like western chaps and cowboy chaps that receive decent search volume. If I get more specific to a certain type of chap, chinks for example, the popular high volume keywords are chinks, chinks chaps, western chinks, and cowboy chinks. These all relate to one type of chap...the chink. I want to be visible for these keywords, but how does one optimize for more than one without diluting? Should I also try to optimize on the homepage of my sites for the general terms like western chaps and cowboy chaps? Can I optimize for both? I could really use some help. Any experts out there up to the job of consulting for me, some with extensive knowledge and experience? I'm not looking for the SEO giants with hundreds of clients. I don't feel that I will get the proper value from those types. My company is small and spending is an issue, that's why I would like someone to consult with. I should be able to do most of the labor, I just need the knowledge.

Optimizing E-Commerce Category Pages For SEO
Hey, Does anyone have any tips for optimizing e-commerce category pages? Looking to add content to each category page but not sure where to put the content i.e. above the footer? Above the search results? In the left hand nav bar? Have a landing page which they click through to see search results? If anyone has any good examples or tips it would be much appreciated. cheers David

Best way to optimize site for Google Maps?
I am working with a site right now and they are ranked #1
On-Page Optimization | | WhiteHat12
for many keyword phrases based on their location and service. Their service is an
Insurance agency, so they rank #1 for many keywords like “Miami Insurance” or “South
Florida Insurance Agency” (their not actually ranked for Miami
just giving an example). I also include their address on every page of the site
(maybe that better helps Google maps?). Problem I am having is when searched
just the keyword phrase they rank number 1 but when searching say “insurance”
while being logged in to the area they rank for they do not come up. I hear that
there might be specific ways to optimize for this. What I would like to know is
what would I have to do to optimize for Google maps and what’s everything I possibly
can do. I am good with search engine optimization but have never really dabbled
much with Google Maps, I always thought they just ranked you based on your
address.0 -
Optimizing for Neighbourhoods
Say I'm optimizing a website for a Veterinarian in North York, a neighborhood in Toronto. Is it important to use Toronto in the keywords/ keyword phrases? When people from within Toronto search for "North York Veterinarian" and "North York Dog Kennel" I want to be found. If I optimize a page for the keyphrases "North York Veterinarian" and "North York Dog Kennel" and only mention Toronto once in the footer with the office address will that be enough for Google to serve up these results in Toronto? Thanks,

Picking a Keyword to optimize for home page
Hi there, I have chosen a keyword for a bunch of my top pages based on relevance, traffic, competition etc, and am tracking in the Tool - so far so good. The issue I am having is with picking a keyword or phrase for the home page - all the suitable keywords I seem to have been allocated to 1 particular sub pages - basically product pages... Anyone come across this issue? Basically any keyword or phrase that I think might be suitable for the home page, I find a more precise page beneath the home page.... Help gratefully accepted!
