Duplicate Page Content / Titles Help
-
Hi guys,
My SEOmoz crawl diagnostics throw up thousands of Dup Page Content / Title errors which are mostly from the forum attached to my website.
In-particular it's the forum user's profiles that are causing the issue, below is a sample of the URLs that are being penalised:
http://www.mywebsite.com/subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=1308
I thought that by adding - http://www.mywebsite.com/subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp to my robots.txt file under 'Ignore' would cause the bots to overlook the thousands of profile pages but the latest SEOmoz crawl still picks them up.
My question is, how can I get the bots to ignore these profile pages (they don't contain any useful content) and how much will this be affecting my rankings (bearing in mind I have thousands of errors for dup content and dup page titles).
Thanks guys
Gareth

Hi,
Just had my latest crawl test completed and unfortunately I am still getting thousands of Dup Page Title / Content errors.
It seems that adding /subfolder/my__forum/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=* to my disallowed list hasn't worked.
Can you think of anyting else I can try?
Thanks guys

Fantastic!
Thanks for this Agents of Value.

You could use a wildcard operator in your robots.txt to deal with this.
Something like this should work:
Disallow: /subfolder/myforum/pop_profile.asp?mode=display&id=*
See here for more details:

Can pop-ups cause duplicate content issues in product pages?
Normally for ecommerce clients that have 100's of products we advise for size guides, installation guides etc to be placed as downloadable PDF resources to avoid huge blocks of content on multiple product pages. If content was placed in a popup e.g. fancybox, across multiple product pages would this be read by Google as duplicate content? Examples for this could be: An affiliate site with mutiple prices for a product and pop-up store reviews A clothing site with care and size guides What would be the best practice or setup?

Is legacy duplicate content an issue?
I am looking for some proof, or at least evidence to whether or not sites are being hurt by duplicate content. The situation is, that there were 4 content rich newspaper/magazine style sites that were basically just reskins of each other. [ a tactic used under a previous regime 😉 ] The least busy of the sites has since been discontinued & 301d to one of the others, but the traffic was so low on the discontinued site as to be lost in noise, so it is unclear if that was any benefit. Now for the last ~2 years all the sites have had unique content going up, but there are still the archives of articles that are on all 3 remaining sites, now I would like to know whether to redirect, remove or rewrite the content, but it is a big decision - the number of duplicate articles? 263,114 ! Is there a chance this is hurting one or more of the sites? Is there anyway to prove it, short of actually doing the work?

Are duplicate links on same page alright?
If I have a homepage with category links, is it alright for those category links to appear in the footer as well, or should you never have duplicate links on one page? Can you please give a reason why as well? Thanks!
