Number of links in breadcrumb
-
Does google take the number of links in breadcrumb as a indicator to the depth of the page in the site structure?
That will mean that a page with 5 links in the breadcrumb is a page very far away from the index, therefore a less important page.

As mentioned, a "flat architecture" is measured by how many clicks away pages are from the home page. You could put everything in the main directory and still have pages that require 10 clicks to get to, or have files within 7 folders that are linked to from the homepage.
That said, a logical hierarchy will make the most sense to you and your users.
-
Oh okay, so would you say it wasn't necessary to avoid extra sub-directories where possible then, as long as the linking structure is optimal?
I mean, if you had the option to either use or not use a sub-directory, given that there will b some benefit in having the folder with keywords in it... which would you choose?
*Edit: All other things being equal I mean.
-
I use folders to organize my files but use links to prioritize my content for both visitors and the search engines.
As for "flat architecture".... I think that the more links you can get into your deep pages the better. Using that philosophy my persistent navigation has way over 100 links... and the blog on that site has over 100 categories in the sidebar plus the persistent links. But I have enough linkjuice to support it.
-
How much value would you place on "the flatter the better" for site architecture then?
I mean I understand what you're saying but is it not still the case that less sub folders is better, even if just for the benefit of shorter links?
-
Instead of folder depth or number of breadcrumb steps..... I believe that the link architecture of your site is far more important.
A page can be waaaay deep in the folders but if you have links to it everywhere across your site google will figure out that the page is very important.
We have a couple of pages that are deep in folders but that are linked to in the persistent navigation of our site. Google knows that they are important pages.

5 links in the breadcrumbs will by definition mean this page is 5 clicks away from the main page right?
Google doesn't have to look at the actual breadcrumbs for that, they can 'simply' count the hops they have to make from the main page to the page being discussed here.

Multi Keyword URL Ranking at Number 1
Here is part of a URL that takes the local number 1 spot for "implant dentist glasgow" [website] /implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland/implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland.html The first /implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland/ directory or page is protected and presumably just exists for ranking reasons. I am tempted to copy that URL on a client's implant page to compete for the keyword (I believe I have better content). Given that it works well for the other site, can you think of any reason that would that be a bad idea? Thanks very much.

Too Many On-Page Links
If a page has more than 100 links, rather than splitting up the page into multiple pages, is it ok to use name="robots" content="noindex, follow" />? The page in question lists links to articles so the page itself isn't that important to appear in serps, but the articles are the helpful content pages: www.ides.com/articles/processing/injection-molding/

Footer-links (navigation)
I want to put navigation links in my footer. I watched the (distilled) whiteboard friday video saying it can be a penalty. How are links in the footer different from links in the navigation. Why don't you get "hit" for putting the word "Real Estate Listings" in the navigation menu? It appears on every one of the 30k pages. I don't get why the links in the footer would have a negative effect if the links in the navigation don't. My example is a real estate website. When people are browsing properties (30k), it is convenient that at the end of the page there is a navigation of areas. I could put the navigation on the sidebar but that would be in essence, the same thing. A wordpress site would dynamically include that sidebar on every page.

Anchor Texts on Internal Links on my Site Question
[Hey folks, Anchor text question for internal links on my site. We all know that proper anchor text is important for rankings, both in links pointing to your site and links on your site. Google webmaster tools is showing my top internal anchor text links to be letters. This is because of navigation on the site which is in a global footer on hundreds of thousands of pages. Do you think that this dilutes or minimizes the relevance of the real anchor texts that we are targeting which trail behind these, or if this went away it would have no effect on the rest of the anchor texts on the site. How would you handle this, we can just get rid of this navigation because it's passing PR and helping the pages get spidered. Thanks in advance. How would you handle network header links?
Some companies have a lot of sites covering various topics, for example, http://ninemsn.com.au/. Each category also have dropdown menus where there are more links, taking their pages to well over 100 links. Should these headers be implemented in javascript? Is there a list of best practices somewhere when dealing with a lot of network sites? I'd prefer to reduce the number of links, but sometimes company policies don't allow this. Any suggestions or tips would be helpful.
