    Hello Seomoz people !

I've been struggling for some time now with an international website project.

It's gonna be an:international website with joomla.

    To sum up:

    • We have an international company
    • The company has 13 subsidiaries worldwide (same products, different names)
    • The company doesn't have enough resources to get 13 independent websites
    • Some subsidiaries work in one country / one language, some others on a region (several countries, several languages)

Thanks to your community we decided to:

    • Get a main website company.com

    • Get subsidiaries folders (middle east, oceania and south america will be easier to link to their subsidiary)

      • .com/asia
      • .com/middle-east
      • .com/oceania
      • .com/south-america
      • .com/uk
      • .com/usa
      • .com/fr
      • .com/es
      • .com/de
      • .com/ma
      • .com/dz
      • .com/it

    We also need to:

    • Get some websites in different languages
      • .com/asia-cn
      • .com/asia-en
      • etc.

Now how do we do to manage:

    • Regional websites (the first 4th on the upper list)

      • Google allows to affect a website to a country not region
      • Will they compete with the .com ?
      • How do we set up them for google ?
    • How do we avoid duplicate content and keep local ranking

      • .com/asia-en/services1.html will have the exact same content that_.com/services1.html_
      • If we use canonical from _.com/asia-en/services1.htm_l to _.com/services1.html , d_oes that mean /asia will not rank in asia ?

Hope you can help us to figure us the best solution for this good project !

    Thanks a lot.

    Florian

      Hello

      Thanks for your help.

I think the best in my case gonna be to keep the strucutre /middle-east and /asia but to use a robot.txt for those subfolders (apart the who are we page).

As explained I have to work also on the brand names which are different in those cases.

So the main SEO effort will be on the .com.

The other sub-folders will be more for users.

Tks for your valuable help !

        Hi Flo,

I thought I replied to your comment but I guess it didn't go through.

Like Gianluca said, you can't target Asia/Europe.  Sorry for not making it more clear in my response above.  You can create different website targeting .hk .jp .kr.

The best way to go to either create different subfolders you mentioned in your question for each country or purchase the ccTLD for each country you want to target.

Regions like Asia and Europe can't be geotargeted in Google Webmaster Tool.

Neither you can use hreflang for regions/continents.

Helo Tommy Tks for your reply. However I have a couple of more questions regarding your answers 🙂 " Geo Target Tool in Webmaster to tell Google that .com/asia-en/services1.html is targeting only people in Asia " -> But in Google webmaster tools I canno't specify asia as country, right ? http://awesomescreenshot.com/050wdlae8 " the href=language tag " -> This is fine, but it will not with region, right ? -> And if asia can be considered as TLD , is there any way to do the same with africa and middle east ? TKs a lot !

                Hi Flo,

You can use he Geo Target Tool in Webmaster to tell Google that .com/asia-en/services1.html is targeting only people in Asia.  You can use this for each of your location pages to tell Google each page has a specific Geo target and this should avoid duplicate content.

Furthermore, you can also use the href=language tag in HTML to tell Google this page will be in english or spanish and targeting different locations.  http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/05/multilingual-and-multinational-site.html

Using these two tools mentioned above hand in hand will help you avoid duplicate content issue within the same website (company.com).

I believe that if you use the geo-target tool in webmaster, it wouldn't compete with your .com website.  Your country subfolder sites will be found by people in that country via search engine and your .com website will be found in US.  They are targeting different location; therefore, I don't see any conflicts.

                Hope this helps.

How to Localise per Region (Europe, America, APAC, EMEI) and not per country as best SEO practise?

Hi SEO expertises! I am currently working with a client that initially have an English website targeting UK users but want to expand their market into four new regions (Europe, America, APAC and EMEI) keeping English as a main language. I would like to request your help here as I told the client ISO location and hreflang it will be just possible per language and they must need to localise each English region with local keywords, however I would like to double check if it will be any way (Sitemap, Hreflang) we can tell Google we are targeting per region and not per country? Thanks a lot!

Best practice for Spanish version of English website?

I'm doing an audit for a site that has all of its English pages under the same roof with Spanish pages in Wordpress. It is intended for Chicago, not Mexico. I suspect this is not a good thing, but I only have instinct to rely on here. What is the best practice for having the same website in two languages? http://www.enhancedform.com/ and http://www.enhancedform.com/spanish/

Two versions of a website with different languages - Best way to do it?

I'm working on a website for a Swedish artist and her page is in Swedish, everything is in Swedish on the site, even though it's not a lot of text on the site. We would like to have the site in English too, or another version of the site in English on a separate domain, what's the best way to proceed from here? The domain name is a .se (swedish domain), would it be better to create a another domain and host the english version of the site on a .com domain? Or will we bump into problems with duplicate content if we create a replica of the swedish site in english. We're using wordpress and I know that there's translation plugins out there, is that a good option? I'm a bit clueless on how to proceed and would love some help or guidance here.

How to fix the duplicate content problem on different domains (.nl /.be) of your brand's websites in multiple countries?

Dear all, what is the best way to fix the duplicate content problem on different domains (.nl /.be) of your brand's websites in multiple countries? What must I add to my code of websites my .nl domain to avoid duplicate content and to keep the .nl website out of google.be, but still well-indexed in google.nl? What must I add to my code of websites my .be domain to avoid duplicate content and to keep the .nl website out of google.be, but still well-indexed in google.nl? Thanks in advance!

Spanglish? Picking keywords for an English website with a Spanish speaking search demographic

I'm putting together meta data for an English website whose target search demographic is the Hispanic market. The website has a Spanish translation as well. When I entered the website into the Google Adwords keyword tool to begin doing keyword research, all keywords returned to me were in Spanish. I am unsure if the meta data keywords I'm preparing for the page should be in Spanish despite the fact that I am preparing the meta data for the English version. Moreover, should there be any mixed Spanish English (Spanglish?) keywords as users might be searching under the English search but in Spanish or with queries that are partially in Spanish?

                  Website Target in Europe

Hi, I am planning a site to target in Europe and I expect to translate my site into ten different languages namely English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, Greek, Portuguese, Dutch and Swedish. I am doing some study of this case in targeting different countries for SEO, most of the advise are the following: a.  Build 10 different websites and target different geographical location in Google Webmaster b.  Get 10 different country specific domains for 10 different websites I would like to hear any suggestion if there is anything better than this ? I had all the materials and translation ready but building 10 different websites or getting 10 different domains are very time consuming and costly. I would be appreciated if any one had any advise for me to make the website more management friendly. Thank you. Tom

                  Subdomain vs folder vs TLD

We are launching in a number of international markets and I am trying to figure out if I should be launching them as folders, e.g.: /es (spanish), /br (brazil), /in (india) or whether they should be subdomains, e.g. es.mysite.com, br.mysite.com, etc. In brazil we managed to secure the tld (.com.br) but not in other regions. Whats the best strategy for us? I was thinking of doing folders as I understand that this strengthens the main domain, while subdomains are considered as separate sites. For Brazil, should we also use a folder, or launch on the .com.br? I assume that using the .com.br means we will have to build up authority from scratch, and in addition, the authority we build up on the .com.br will not help to grow the .com In addition, is there value in interlinking between verions  (the versions will have the same content but in different languages)? Thanks!

Domain strategy for UK and USA

Hi Everyone, We have example.org.uk with 20K inbound links. We want to target the US as well as the UK. I would be interested to hear what approaches are best for SEO. For example is it better to keep our current domain and have subdirectories for USA for example. Or would it be better to register example.org and then use subdirectories. Or is it better to use different domains for each country? Any help with this much appreciated. Cheers
