Ok here is my url goo.gl/Ai17f we have tons of products, some with long descriptions some with short. Categories have some content in them and we also have videos, brands, articles section and a blog. I m suffering from google's algo changes in 2012. We received a link penalty in sept 29th and since then have cleaned up our link portfolio got rid of thousands of links, used the disavow tool and working on new links. We are trying to get back on the right track here. I have fired everyone who worked on this site for the past 3 - 4 years. I m now trying to fix all the issue by myself. I would appreciate if you could guide me in the right direction with any advice.
thank you

Which is better in your opinion a short but to the point paragraph, or longer but more generic content about whatever product you are selling in google's mind ?
If you write a short paragraph of a couple dozen words you run the risk of "thin" content. That is usually not a problem if you only have a few of these pages on your website, but if you have thousands of them then it is possible to be hit with a Penguin problem.
Writing those short descriptions is also a lost opportunity. If you write something substantive it might rank better and it will also bring you more long-tail traffic from the diversity of words on a page.
So, you have to please the visitor (Jane in Nebraska) and you have to please google. To do that you can write a very short paragraph that summarizes the product or topic and then add as much supplemental information as you want below. That gives visitors immediate and short information - plus those who want more will have it readily available.
I had a lot of pages on one of my sites that had very short (15-20 word) descriptions. When I upgraded them to 100-300 words most of them improved in rankings within a few weeks and they immediately received a lot more traffic from long tail queries involving words that were not included in the original short description but were included in the improved version.
I am currently upgrading the 100-300 word descriptions to articles with several photos and 1000 to 3000 words of text. These are now some of the best content on the web for these topics and they compete for top positions on the first page of the SERPs, they appear in lots of image searches and pull in even more long-tail traffic.

Yes it is a learning process here. I come here sometimes and read threads hoping to learn some stuff and get advice. But some of the answers are short of helping the individual find the right direction, cause not all of us are seo or into these subjects as deep as some others. Which is better in your opinion a short but to the point paragraph, or longer but more generic content about whatever product you are selling in google's mind ? is having a short paragraph considered "thin" ? is having lots of content considered crowded, too much stuff, or confusing for Jane in Nebraska ? I guess the question is do you have a recipe for what is the right amount ? or do you know someone who knows.

And this is definitely what I was talking about when I said you get great advice on the forums.
EGOL and Salmon brought something to the table that I haven't thought about, and I'm definitely going to use in the future. That's why I love using this forum. I've learned so much by interacting on here, and that's how you advance.
Don't give up on the Q&A orion68, and always keep an open mind.

Thanks....
I think that the people who gave thumbs down want to hear...
"Uh huh... looks good."
Who on SEOmoz is going to do a competent content review of my article on flame spectrophotometers?
"Uh huh... looks good." is what I will get.

I think EGOL makes a pretty decent point actually.
I speak from experience... once upon a time we hired one or two respected SEO companies to write content on our air conditioning site. The content included a lot of keywords but in the main was waffle and uninteresting.
We later got proper aircon engineers to help us create our content, this included great explanations, high quality diagrams and videos/animations. This practice massively improved the user experience and significantly helped our rankings.
SEO people don't know your industry, experts (in your field) do!

You said that you wanted a content review.
I told you where to get competent opinions.
-
I thought that's what I was doing since this is the joint for SEO people who know this kind of stuff. This answer definitely makes me want to come back here for more great advice.
thank you anyways

Hi Nick,
You can try private messaging some Mozzers who have demonstrated interest in this sort of thing in previous threads.
Or, if you're feeling completely open, try posting your websites URL in your thread and any associated links to external content you've created (Does the site have a blog? Are you submitting guest blogs?)
Other than that, there are paid consulting services you could try, but there are many willing and helpful people in this Q&A forum who will always give you great advice!
-
Hopefully the website isn't about local serial killers...
-
If you have a website about hydraulic jacks, ask someone who knows about them.
If you have a site about knitting, ask someone who knits.
Otherwise the reviewer will tell you.... "Uh huh... looks good."

Guest blog on my web site.
**I received this email from a lady who wishes to write articles and post them on my site under my news section . Ok, if its quality I dont mind hiring somebody to create a post. Her proposal is as follows and this is her email :-**Basically what I can offer is to write a couple of articles for your News section, something fun and interesting for your visitors which will hopefully drag some traffic your way. I could make them well suited to your site and I could include in each a link to a client of mine - one who wants to be exposed on a good site like yours - and for doing that I can offer you compensation of £33 for each client link - 1 per article. For example, one client is Watches of Switzerland, so I could write an article about ideal wedding gifts for a groom maybe, or something about a perfect Honeymoon destination like Switzerland, and slip a link in there. Other clients include Weddingsite and Lampcommerce - which could be included in something about making a matrimonial home. There are a few stipulations I would need to abide by, like - the article would need to be 500 words, it would need the link to be a 'do follow' link, it would need a picture or two, and it would need a couple of 'sacrifice links' (just links to Wikipedia or something to make it more Google friendly). Question. Is this what a guest article is ? and also is the format ok ? Sorry if this seems a dumb question but still learning guys . King regards to everyone Peter

Duplicate Legal Content
Oftentimes lawyer websites will publish laws (codes, statutes, regulations, case law, etc). They add no value to the text, it's just copy pasted. Therefore, the same text/content may be on potentially hundreds of websites. Does google interpret this as duplicate content, or does it recognize government content as special? I want to have the laws on my website as well, however I am debating whether to add no follow tags or not. Or I'm thinking about adding value to the content by breaking down the specific law. However, even then at least 50% of the content on the page will still be the law, and I'm not sure if that is enough to be considered duplicate content.

How to Get Rid of Duplicate Content Captured on Article Lists
We have a ton of articles and blog posts on our site. Currently, we display summary lists of articles that contain the first paragraph of the article in the summary list. However, in my reports, this is coming back as duplicate content with the full article itself. How do I fix this? Ex: article main page- http://www.robots.com/articles/10 First article on that page- http://www.robots.com/articles/viewing/grippers-for-robots (which shows up as duplicate content with the main artilce page). With our blogs, we have the most recent 5 blogs (in the same summary format) listed on our main blog page. We then have categories that people can sort by. But again, this is causing us duplicate content because those pages show the first paragraph of the blogs related to that category. Ex: blog main page- http://www.robots.com/blog. First blog listed on that page- http://www.robots.com/blog/viewing/robots-and-automation-bringing-jobs-back-to-the-united-states (which then shows as duplicate content with the main blog page). And then you can also select categories to see related topics: http://www.robots.com/blog/category/buying-a-robot which is showing as duplicate content also. Help! How can I prevent this? Thanks! Press Releases and Duplicate Content on Event Related Site
I have a site that lists events. I ask those submitting events to submit original content if possible, but frequently they submit press releases which are already published elsewhere. I rewrite some of the press releases, but do not have time to rewrite every press release that comes my way. I want my users to get a comprehensive list of events, but I don't want get a penalty for duplicate content. What is the best solution?

Tools to Eval Blog Content - Rate your Fav tool
Ok, so I know that is has been covered in depth and at the risk of being sent to “google it!” (Which I have done with no success) I thought that I would ask your opinions on the topic. What are the best content marketing evaluation tools? By this I am specifically referring to tools that evaluate the content of Blogs, etc and not the performance of the blog, etc. I’m eager to hear your thoughts of what works and if you care to share what tools did not. Thanks

Index pdf files but redirecto to site
Hi, One of our clients has tons of PDFs (manuals, etc.) and frequently gets good rankings for the direct PDF link. While we're happy about the PDFs attracting users' attention, we'd like to redirect them to the site where the original PDF link is published and avoid that people open the pdf directly. In short, we'd like to index the PDFs, but show to users the pdf link within a site - how should we proceed to do that? Thanks, GM
