URL Rewrite

Using the .htaccess file how do I rewrite a url from
www.exampleurl.com/index.php?page=example
to
removing index.php?page=
Any help is muchly appreciated

I would mark this question as answered, it seems that a lot of great minds have come together and given a lot of really accurate responses. It just keeps others from re-answering.
-
You have to setup a new URL. The rewrite only redirects traffic. If the page doesnt exist you are redirecting traffic to a page that doesn't exist. No Bueno!
-
I had a similar problem and found this site particuarly useful: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/misc/rewriteguide.html
Works great for me now. Good Luck.

Thanks for that pointer goonewscowboy, I just stumbled across this article and it was a good read
-
This line should exclude that part: index.php?page=
Just try if it works.

URL rewriting is a common and safe practice and as goodnewscowboy points out: http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/a-simple-guide-to-htaccess - just test it and see that nothing funky is going on with your site and note that the above examples are not customised to your particular site / page structure.
Search engines are good with picking up 301s for new pages. If your pages are already in index and have links the only downside is that you may lose a bit of anchor text focus (I remember Matt Cutts talking about this in one of his videos) but link juice should pass through just fine.

Hiya Craig: This post from YOUmoz might help you to be able to wrap your mind around it better.

Will this have any negative effect in the serps?

RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^page/([^/.]+)/?$ index.php?page=$1 [L]
If you're using the numbered (e.g. page=102) IDs:
RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^article/([0-9]+)/? article.php&article=$1 [R=301, L]
-
This is what the current file looks like if it helps
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
-
And do I have to set up a new url or does it actually rewrite the existing URL?
I really can't get my head round this
-
What about:
RewriteRule ^index.php?page=(.*)$ /$1 [R=301,L]

Duplicate blog URLs in Magenton
On one my sites Moz is picking up 4483 duplicate content pages. The majority of these are from our blog and video sections on our site. We're using a URL shortener and it appears that some of the pages are the full version of the URL then the shortened version. However if you go to the full version you get redirected to the shorter one. So I would assume that the Moz crawler should get the same redirect? We're also getting pagination being shown as duplicate pages, which I would half expect, but the URLs Magento is creating are truly bizarre: e.g http://www.xxx.com/uk/blog/cat/view/identifier/news/page/news/index.php/alarms-doorbells/?p=2 Alarms and doorbells is one of our product categories, which is displayed in the LHN on the blog page but has nothing to do with the blog itself. On another site on the same Magento instance, with the same content (they're for two different regions) we're show as having 248 duplicate pages, again in the video and news section, but this is a completely different scale of issue. Has anyone else encountered issues like these? I'm probably going to put a noindex in place on these two sections until we can get a solution in place as we're completely unranked in google on this site. Thanks

Are my Domain URLs correctly set up?
Hi Im struggling with this probably easy concept, so I am sure one of you guys out there can answer it fairly easy! My website is over50choices.co.uk and whilst using the free tools in Majestic it said that I had: 77 Referring Domains pointing to www.over50choices.co.uk and only 35 pointing to www.over50choices.co.uk/ And in Moz it said: The URL you've entered redirects to another URL. We're showing results for www.over50choices.co.uk/ since it is likely to have more accurate link metrics. See data for over50choices.co.uk instead? Does this mean that my domains arent set up correctly and are acting as separate domains - should one be pointing to the other? Your help appreciated. Ash

Exact URL Match For Ranking
Has anyone else run into this issue? I have a competitor that purchases domain names for popular inner pages we are trying to rank for. We are trying to build a brand, our competitors have a lower domain authority but rank higher for inner pages in the serps with VERY little content, backlinks/seo work, they host a single page and do a re-direct to their main site. Would this be a good long term strategy? EX. We sell golf clubs our brand name is golfcity (Ex only) and we carry callaway clubs, our competitor is also building a brand but they purchased callawayclubs.net and do a re-direct. They rank on page one for keywords callaway clubs. If I do try to do this does one have an advantage over another? .com. net .org. because Ive seem them all used and rank on page 1. Thank you!!!

Multiple URLs
I'm trying to check the URLs of this site- http://www.ofo.com.au, and I see that their old site has 301 re-directed to it...but the site http://ofo.com.au and http://outdoorfurnitureoutlet.com.au are both still up and I can't see any 301 redirects from them. Is it a problem even if when I do a site: search for them I get no results?

Cyrillic letter in URL - Encoding
Hi all We are launching our site in Russia. As far as I can see by searching Google all sites have URLs in latin letters. Is there a special reason for this? - It seems that cyrillic letters also work. My technical staff says that it might give some encoding problems. Can anyone give me some insight into this? Thanks in advance.. / Kenneth

This url: elettrodomestici.yeppon.it/climatizzatori/condizionatori-fissi/prodotti/condizionatori-fissi-comfee/ it's a duplicate of this elettrodomestici.yeppon.it/climatizzatori/condizionatori-fissi/prodotti/condizionatori-fissi-comfee/ but the only url that I can see in the website is this one.
