Empty search results labeled as Soft 404s?
-
I have a site with faceted search but sometimes when someone drills down too far it ends up with no results. The page and outlined and faceted navigation are still there.
The site uses dynamic URLs for the faceted navigation but Google is reporting these no results pages as Soft 404s. How should we handle these?
Should we redirect these?
Can we return 404 in the status code but still show the no results page they are looking for?
Thanks for your responses

First I suggest reading this post:

You may want to consider limiting the depth of your indexable facets. If these are strictly search pages, and you have an alternate form of navigation, you may consider not allowing any of them to be indexed, as Mike recommended. I couldn't say for sure without knowing more about your particular site and situation.
Your bottom line question seems to be "How should we handle these" and in my opinion I think you should focus more on the user than Google. It sounds like a pretty annoying user experience to spend time drilling down five facets deep only to reach a page that has no results. Why even allow them to drill down to that last page? Why not grey out the option? And if they do drill down that far, try showing them some alternatives.
If you want to dynamically serve a 404 status code in the http header for such pages that would be fine too, but it could cause problems if you sometimes have products on those pages and sometimes don't since that URL would be constantly coming in and out of the index. A better solution would be to make the page more useful and/or limit the depth of indexation.
Also, as Mike alludes to below, if you have another source of navigation on the site the "search result" pages probably shouldn't be indexable at all. It depends on your situation so I'm not going to say for sure that you shouldn't index them.

Does the resulting page shown notify users that there is no relevant information to return and suggest alternates to search for or a way to contact user support/customer service? If so then I wouldn't worry about a Soft 404. Considering these internal search pages should also be "NoIndex, Follow" then the odds of them showing up in serps and/or causing you real problems is low.

Desktop vs. Mobile Results
When googling on www.google.ca for "wedding invitations" and in my own geo location market of Toronto, my site - www.stephita.com, will show up differently on SERP on desktop (Chrome & IE) vs. mobile (iPad, iPhone, android, etc.). On desktop SERP, I will show up 6/7 position... (which is relatively a new position, the past 3 weeks - I was previously on page 2) (After a bunch of SEO fixes, I've managed to propel my site back to page 1!) On mobile SERP, I only show up on 1/2 position on PAGE 2 😞 As I mentioned above, I did a bunch of SEO fixes that I think were related to Panda/Penguin algos. So I'm wondering why my MOBILE SERP has NOT improved along the way? What should I be looking at to fix this 5-6 position differential? Thanks all!

Does Google still don't index Hashtag Links ? No chance to get a Search Result that leads directly to a section of a page? or to one of numeras Hashtag Pages in a single HTML page?
Does Google still don't index Hashtag Links ? No chance to get a Search Result that leads directly to a section of a page? or to one of numeras Hashtag Pages in a single HTML page? If I have 4 or 5 different hashtag link section pages , consolidated into one HTML Page, no chance to get one of the Hashtag Pages to appear as a search result? like, if under one Single Page Travel Guide I have two essential sections: #Attractions #Visa no chance to direct search queries for Visa directly to the Hashtag Link Section of #Visa? Thanks for any help

Can Someone Provide an Example of a Site that Indexes Search Results Successfully?
So, I know indexing search results is a big no-no, but I recently started working with a site that sees 50% of its traffic from search result pages. The user engagement on these pages is very high, and these pages rank well too. Unfortunately, they've been hit by Panda. They already moved the section of the site with search results to a subdomain, and saw temporary success. There must be a way to preserve their traffic from these search result pages and get out from under Panda.

Strange issue with video search results...
Hi all, Got a bit of a weird problem that I can't work out. I've got a page that contains a video. The SERP for one keyword has the video appearing directly in the search listing like a video rich snippet / schema. Do not want. This rich snippet style video result only appears when the page is found for this one keyword, and no other. How do I stop google displaying the page like this? Why is it only displayed like this for one keyword and no others? The video is a YouTube video and is embedded in the page. Nothing fancy is going on with the code. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

If search results were not originally blocked with robots.txt, and need to be de-indexed, is it better to use noindex, nofollow or noindex, follow?
