On-Page Analysis Question
-
Hi, I have a question about the On-Page Analysis report.
I am tracking two different keywords for our campaign: "Private Dining" and "Private Dining Sacramento". We are ranked 8th for Private Dining Sacramento but we have an On-Page analysis rating of F. While on the other hand we are not ranked in the top 50 for Private Dining but have an A on-page report.
When looking at the on-page report it makes sense that we have an F for Private Dining Sacramento as we don't use that keyword anywhere on the page. We only use Private Dining. However, we are still ranked for Private Dining Sacramento and not for Private Dining.
Should we update our keywords/text to use the Private Dining Sacramento keyword instead of the Private Dining? If we add Sacramento will we also get credit for Private Dining because it will still be part of all H,P and A tags we use?

/private-dining | A | | no data |
| |Private Dining Sacramento
/private-dining | F | | 8 | |

Thank you for the responses. I just want to make sure I clarify any actions I take so I don't destroy the SEO we have. Since our location is located in Sacramento, being ranked by Google for the Private Dining Sacramento while still receiving an F rank for this keyword in SEOMOZ isn't really an issue.
One thing I still do not quite understand is that If we add Sacramento to our text/titles is it going to hurt the Private Dining keyword itself or is it simply going to help us get ranked for both?

Hi Chiaryn,
That's a great point worth noting about the On Page tool... "To the On-Page tool Sacramento is just a collection of letters, but Google would infer that you are targeting users in Sacramento when looking at how well the page is optimized for Private Dining.

Hey Kevin,
This is actually a great question.
Google isn't very open about how they select sites for the rankings, so we have to base this type of report on best practices and past experience so some keywords can have funky results.
For the location specific keyword, you can almost use the Private Dining report as a mirror for the Private Dining Sacramento report. While Google knows your business is in Sacramento, our tool is only looking for specific words in the code and content of the page and does not take location into account. To the On-Page tool Sacramento is just a collection of letters, but Google would infer that you are targeting users in Sacramento when looking at how well the page is optimized for Private Dining.
As for the reason why the site would not be ranking for the more broad keyword but would be for the location specific keyword, that is most likely because you are optimized for the term Private Dining and the location specific version of the keyword is not as competitive as the more nationally applicable keyword would be.
I hope that makes sense! Let me know if you need any clarification.

This is a really good question as I had a similar issue.
After joining SEOMoz I changed all my page Titles and Descriptions according to the On Page Reports and sure enough I ranked Number 1 for all the keywords and had lots of A's and B's which felt great - problem is that my search engine traffic totally dried up!
What I then realised was that the more words you add to your Page Title that are matched in your Page Text and Descriptions, it becomes more niche - like mid-sized 'long tail keywords' (!) and is very easy to do when offering local services as you will probably include a location and maybe words like 'hire, book or find' aswell.
'Private Dining' is broad and you will probably have a high bounce rate for this term. However 'Private Dining Sacramento' is more locally orientated and your bounce rate should be lower and I imagine this page will probably rank higher in SERPs - question is... is this the term that web users are typing into Google?
This is why keyword research for all your pages is so important as it can guide your overall strategy. My key learning is that it's not about being found for 'found' sake, it's about what the customer is looking for, in your case is there really a market for 'private dining sacramento' or do they search for something else i.e. 'home catering sacramento' etc?
I am now 6 weeks on and traffic is only just starting to come back to my website after re-adjusting my Page Reports back to their original state, so be very careful before you make any changes as getting it wrong and correcting it is a nightmare!

Yes, mention "private dining sacramento" on your page to improve your relevance for that term. Doing so will also help you optimize for the "private dining" keyword.

FAQ page structure
I have read in other discussions that having all questions on an FAQ page is the way to go and then if the question has an answer worthy of its own page, you should abbreviate the answer and link to the page with more content. My question is when using some templates in WP, they have a little + button you can click and it reveal the answer to the question. Does this hurt SEO versus having all text visible and then using headers/subheaders? An example of the + button https://fyrfyret.dk/faq/

Noindex child pages (whose content is included on parent pages)?
I'm sorry if there have been questions close to this before... I've using WordPress less like a blogging platform and more like a CMS for years now... For content management purposes we organize a lot of content around Parent/Child page (and custom-post-type) relationships; the Child pages are included as tabbed content on the Parent page. Should I be noindexing these child pages, since their content is already on the site, in full, on their Parent pages (ie. duplicate content)? Or does it not matter, since the crawlers may not go to all of the tabbed content? None of the pages have shown up in Moz's "High Priority Issues" as duplicate content but it still seems like I'm making the Parent pages suffer needlessly... Anything obvious I'm not taking into consideration? By the by, this is my first post here @ Moz, which I'm loving; this site and the forums are such a great resource! Anyways, thanks in advance!

A question on cached pages
Hi all. I have been testing different ways of writing the text on the homepage of the website www document-management-solutions co.uk because we are ranking very low for the keyword Document Management Software. I've recently learnt about pages being 'cached' and wanted to just clarify something. The last time the page was cached was on 26th March. I have made changed to the homepage since then and wanted to see how it has affected our ranking. Will I not be able to know if it has had a positive/negative effect until the next time our page is cached? Thanks

Duplicate Page Content on Empty Manufacturer Pages
I work for an internet retailer that specializes in pet supplies and medications. I was going through the Crawl Diagnostics for our website, and I saw in the Duplicate Page Content section that some of our manufacturer pages were getting flagged. The way our site is set up is that when products are discontinued we mark them as discontinued and use 301 redirects to redirect their URLs to other relevant products, brands, or our homepage. We do the same thing with brand and manufacturer pages if all of their products are discontinued. 90% of the time, this is a manual process. However, the other 10% of the time certain products come and go automatically as part of our inventory system with one of our fulfillment partners. This can sometimes create empty manufacturer pages. I can't redirect these empty pages because there's a chance that products will be brought back in stock and the page will be populated again. What can we do so that these pages won't get marked as duplicates while they're empty? Write unique short descriptions about the companies? Would the placement of these short descriptions matter--top of the page under the category name vs bottom of the page underneath where the products would go? The links in the left sidebar, top, and in the footer our part of our site architecture, so those are always going to be the same. To contrast, here's what a manufacturer page with products looks like: Thanks! http://www.vetdepot.com/littermaid-manufacturer.html

I have a question about on page links or duplicate contant
Ok help me out here friends. I’m working with the warnings and errors for my site. I have two problems that relate to each other and I want to know if you had to choose what problem what would you choose. I’m running into some duplicate content and title errors because under categories for my products there are so many products that it creates more than one page and with each new page it has the same title or same content on the page. I tried to make this less in some cases by showing more products per page like 100 items and in most cases per category it will only show one page now. Now some times there’s still more than one page and also this creates too many links now on that category page. So I think I can get rid of all the to many on page links but it will make more pages and duplicate content and title tag. What would you guys do?

Too Many On-Page Links
Hi All, New to SEOMoz, so thanks in advance for any answers! Looking at our Crawl Diagnostics and "Too Many On-Page Links" is first on the list. The site was build with the intention of users being able to quickly get to where they want to go with drop down menus (sub nav), so we built the navigation using bullet points/css. Yes, agreed there are too many links on each page from our navigation, main nav cats are 4 with sub nav about 40, but what is the best way to resolve the problem other then removing most of the links (from the sub nav drop down)? Could we just use the attribute rel=nofollow for the sub nav links? TIA
