Creating Viral Content
-
Hi, I’m currently building a brand new site in the fitness vertical. The site is brand new, no authority, and backlinks.
My goal is to turn it into a high end authority website, with organic traffic, and into a brand. My other goal is it to be purely organic growth, content driven. All my backlinks are natural. I don’t want to plead with other webmasters to link to me, whether it would be for guest posting or other questionable SEO tactics.
I understand that creating awesome content so people have a reason to visit and link to, is what I need, and it’s a long-term process.
I guess the part, in which I’m seeking advice/suggestions on is how do I go about creating awesome content which people link to and share.
I’m thinking of doing something like Movoto and bridging together the sites topic and current trends online.
For instance content on comparing North Korea average diet and how it compares to the US. Or who’s the fittest character on Games of Thrones. It’s relevant to the site and is current related to a hot trends.
However creating content which is designed to go viral can be quite costly and I don’t have unlimited pockets nor do most people. E.g. creating an awesome info graphic, collecting data, hiring a professional writer, getting professional images, etc. So you don’t really want to screw up.
So how can you reduce the risk? How do I go about it from a risk adverse angle?
I’m thinking I can find content which has been previously shared (had a pulse), repurpose the content (I remember Rand mentioned this in one of the white board Friday sessions, make it way better, use visuals, apps etc), then base some of my content decisions using this process.
I guess other ways – look at places like Reddit, bridging topic with current rends (as mentioned before), find popular forum topics, etc.
The goal of the content is:
1) Content which naturally attract high quality links to the site, so it lifts up the other pages which don’t attract many links (through authority).
2) Turn some of that viral traffic into long-term subscribers of the website, and repeat visitors.
- Increase total search presence naturally
Any suggestions or insights into this question would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Matt

This is the approach that I am using. I spend all of my time creating content.
It is a really really slow way to start but every bit of content that you get up starts to pull in a little traffic and after you have done that for a while it starts to build momentum.
I would focus on the following types of content...
-- misconceptions (these surprise people and can get shared)
-- basic knowledge explained exceptionally well (if you can do this in best-on-the-web quality it can get shared widely - but slowly)
-- things that everyone should know but most people don't know (how to select mountain bike tires for sand vs mud vs gravel vs pavement)
-- demonstrations (how to change a mountain bike tire in 50 seconds)
-- stuff that pisses people off (how to prevent flats... focusing on rim strips, spoke ends, tire selection, tire inspection, inflation, what to avoid hitting)
-- stuff that surprises... (the number of calories required to finish an ultradistance triathlon and the amount that must be consumed on the road to keep from bonking... on top of that there is the liquid requirement - which varies by race day air temp - very different approaches for 50 degree race day in Montreal and a 90 degree race day in Florida)
It is really rare to have something go viral. I shoot for things that are simply good content that people will share if they like it.

Hi Matt
First of all, I'd like to say that you're well on your way. You've got a great mindset for all of this and have already suggested two very good ideas on how to go about the content curation. The content that you have in mind also looks to be very appealing.
Let's look at ways at how you can minimise the risk. First of all, to limit cost, you may want to look at creating the content yourself. It could still take time, but have a look at sites like Easel.ly, Visual,ly and Infogr.am. All sites are free and come with some nice interfaces and graphics that can help you to at least visualise your post. I'm also a big fan of Timeline JS, which adds an interactive element to an infographic.
Another way to minimise risk would be to get a brief from a great site or news source before you put the content together. That way you know that, provided that the content is useful, it has a very high chance of being picked up.
For this, I absolutely love using Help A Reporter Out (HARO) - it's a service that puts you in touch with reporters looking for expertise to feature in their content. I can tell you now that the health & fitness section is buzzing with requests 2-3 times daily and you often get some very big websites and news sources looking for a hand. Definitely get in there and make a name for yourself.
Like I said, I think you're approaching this in exactly the right way. Hopefully these links can help you out too. Furthermore, I'd certainly look at creating video content, especially for a viral effect. Not only does health and fitness simply lend itself perfectly for video content (who doesn't like looking at pretty people?), I think there's definite room in the market for a self-depreciating or mickey-taking spin on the industry. You have your gym junkies and your obsessive dieters and the like - there's as much ego in that industry as there is in SEO! There might be an opportunity to poke fun at it slightly, while still producing some great and useful content for you and your audience.
All the best with everything and keep us up to date, would love to see how you progress!

Recommendations for a collaborative workflow for an integrated content marketing / social media campaign?
We are currently using an excel spreadsheet that is a homemade checklist of all of the various places we want to post. We take one topic, and we make various formats (video, promotional image, blog article, press release) and we list all of the posts we want to make in all of the channels (Twitter, LinkedIn, FB, instagram, pinterest, etc.). Is there any articles that describe a more streamlined way to do this? We have tried basecamp but looking for other options. We have a small team of about 5 people that collaborate to design, write, and post the content. I was looking for an article that describes the workflow that might simplify the communication and execution of this process. Thanks!

Content Marketing and Twitter
Hello, I'd like to improve how I use twitter for pushing a piece of content. Here's what I am planning to do currently: First, we created a useful piece of content for a niche where we'll be appealing to the humanitarian side of thing. Nothing like this piece of content is on the web. The subject is not mouthwateringly attractive to other websites, but it is good, very useful, authoritative and uses the information we have in our niche. For Twitter, we plan to pick a website carefully that could use our content and 1. of course follow that site on twitter 2. Retweet 2 or 3 relevant good tweets the site has put out. If the person I want to contact has a twitter account, retweet some of his too. 3. Tweet a general tweet about a good article or blog post the site has with a link to the site and the article. 4. Tweet at a specific person in the site's company (or to the general twitter account if there isn't anyone specific) asking if they need help with content if it is well written and useful, then later tweeting introducing our article. Email will also be used. I'm really new to using twitter for content marketing, any help is appreciated. Facebook liking/sharing as well as blog comment posting along with adding to g plus circles will also be used. Thanks.

I have 3 different niches - Should I create 3 different Social Profiles/hubs?
So I have 3 completely different niches. As in B2B vs. B2C, as well as markets that are not related whatsoever. Unless your grandmother that likes to sew, just so happens to also love to demolish giant buildings (lol, I never thought about how polar opposite my niches were until I re-read that sentence). Anyways, I guess the company should also have profiles/hubs, but what about for Outreach? I feel like outreach should be done by a personal profile, since outreach is all about networking and building relationships. Any direction/help/tips here? Thanks everyone, Tyler A.

Social media profiles with same description - Duplicate content or reinforcing business details?
Hi, I am currently doing a Social media review and find myself wondering whether having exactly the same copy - or part thereof, on a businesses' Facebook, LinkedIn, G+, Twitter, profile(s) is likely to be viewed by SE's as a good or bad thing? Is it duplicate content and to be avoided? Or would it be viewed as a case of the business trying to ensure a consistent profile and therefore reinforcing your business details?

Should I use a subdomain our primary domain for this content?
Hi, We have an eCommerce site www.refreshcartridges.co.uk and currently publish videos, unique articles, troubleshooting advice etc. on a subdomain igloo.refreshcartridges.co.uk. The hope is that the content on igloo will prove sufficiently useful for someone to either link to or bookmark for future reference. Eventually this will hopefully result in sales through the main site. We were assured several years ago that we should host this content on a subdomain but the more I think about it, the more I think that this content should be hosted as part of the main site (for example www.refreshcartridges.co.uk/igloo/). My logic is that this would extend a couple of advantages, not least that any links built to this unique content would be attributed to the primary domain rather than the subdomain. Although I appreciate the subdomain does link back to the primary domain I can't help but feel this dilutes the potential strength of any link. Post Penguin I think it would be nice to get genuine, natural links appreciating content on our primary domain rather than a separate subdomain. It should probably be pointed out that we only publish articles related to our key business activity (printing, cartridges, technology) on igloo. There is no unrelated content designed simply as link bait. If we were to make the move we would of course 301 all the old pages.. I would really appreciate your opinion on whether you agree or whether you would be tempted to keep the content on a subdomain. Thanks for your help! Chris

You have a limited budget of $2,000 (US). Do you buy links or create / seed content?
We have a client who is being told by their incumbent supplier that they should renew their annual contract to buy links on 4 domains by their incumbent SEO agency. It will cost approximately $2,000. We are recommending they produce decent content, like a video, an infographic based on data that is exclusively theirs and seed this with bloggers / real world publications / trade press / etc. The client is struggling to make a decision because he's caught between two SEO's with different approaches. He doesn't have the budget for both. He's scared of losing his position in the SERPs. So, I said I'd get some votes from other SEO's. Which would you recommend? Option 1 1,000's of links on 4 domains Option 2 Create link bait Seed using social media GO!
